The test lead times associated with measuring changes in dimensions due to humidity changes are prohibitively longer & lot of machine time is consumed in the process. This can become a limiting scenario wherein multiple materials are scaled up for measurements or multiple formulation variables are being analyzed. In this paper, we propose to use the “Swell Index” as the prime factor to be used for evaluating the changes in dimensions. Swell Index of a material is defined as the ratio of difference in dimension to the original dimension as a function of temperature or humidity and is expressed as percent swell index (temperature) or percent swell index (Humidity) respectively. Swell Index is measured using TMA by measuring the dimensional changes as a function of time while cycling the environment of the test sample between dry Nitrogen (~0% RH) and wet nitrogen (100% RH). This analysis can be accomplished using few grams of samples without manual intervention, thereby leading to significant reduction in test lead times. This is maddening, because a virtually inexhaustible supply of the stuff is right out there in plain sight of everybody, and has been since before our ancestors wiggled out of the oceans. Too bad it's 93 million miles away. Here on earth, there are vast stores of hydrogen in plain sight too -- in the oceans, lakes, rivers and clouds. Too bad it's already combined with oxygen and other elements. Elemental hydrogen is actually rather easy to obtain. Electrolysis of water splits apart the hydrogen and oxygen, which can be collected and stored. And it is pretty easy also to strip elemental hydrogen off of hydrocarbons, for example natural gas, which is mostly methane (CH4). The trouble is that electrolysis of water requires an electricity source. Taking that electricity through the electrolysis - free hydrogen - oxidation - water vapor loop wastes quite a bit of energy. And it's way more efficient simply to burn the hydrocarbons to release their potential energy than it is to go through the hydrogen loop there.
