...manifestations of the signs of a long foretold prophecy describing the end of a force of evil, Bilbo Baggins (the eponymous hobbit) is enlisted, by Gandalf the grey wizard, to embark on a quest and his fellow comrades with the 12 dwarves and the wizard to reclaim the lost kingdom of the dwarves. Viewing this premise from my lens, Bilbo, Thorin, Gandalf and company are collectively considered as the force of good to fight the evil in the land.. From the first five chapters, Bilbo can be perceived as a risk averse individual who is totally oblivious to the spirit of adventure within him. As such, he is described as living a relatively inconspicuous life in the hobbit community. One characterized by being predictable, unadventurous and enjoying the simple pleasures of the Shire. In stark contrast to the above description of Bilbo’s personality, being adventurous is summarily presented as hereditary in the Baggins’ lineage. This is seen in the first chapter where Bilbo’s genealogy is described by Gandalf in justification of his choice of Bilbo to embark on the mission. This also forms the conviction with which Gandalf presents Bilbo to Thorin and company as a “skilled burglar” with the requisite skills for the journey at hand. Bilbo’s acceptance of the mission was an action indicative of his “reluctant willingness” to step out of his comfort zone (his hobbit hole and community) - a transforming experience in which he: • Discovers his thirst for adventure. • Learned...

...because Bilbo is a burglar and they need his skills to find the gold. But since Gandalf said this quote, they might be able to find the gold. “Throng!” thought Mr. Baggins “ I don't like the sound of that. I must really sit down for a minute and collect my wits, and have a drink” (20). I think this quote is important because this develops Bilbo's character. This quote says that Bilbo doesn't like to be in a large crowd of people. If Bilbo is in a large crowd then he might just go crazy and a drink might be able to calm him down. Part C: Analyzing What seems to be some important values or beliefs in your book? An important value i found in my book is that Thorin's dad wanted to give thorin the map to the mountains. Thorin’s dad wanted Thorin to find the gold so he could become wealthy and he also wanted Thorin to have an adventure. What biases have you detected in your book? A bias I detected in my book is that the hobbits believe that Bilbo should lead the way after Gandalf left because he is a burglar. The dwarfs think that just because Bilbo is a burglar he could find the things that they need....

...life to help the dwarves many times in this book. He cares enough to help them when they are imprisoned in the dungeon of the wood elves and when they are captured by the giant spiders. In the wood elves’ dungeon when Bilbo has freed all the dwarves he tells them, “You just follow me! We must all keep together and not risk getting separated. All of us must escape or none, and this is our last chance.” Bilbo could leave them in the dungeon for the rest of their lives, but he decides to stay and free them. Bilbo also shows that they were a team because he says,” All of us must escape or none.” Bilbo is not just brave and caring. He is also selfless. Bilbo gives the Arkenstone to Bard to help his people, when he could keep it for himself. Thorin says, “For the Arkenstone of my father is worth more than a river of gold in itself, and to me it is beyond price. That stone of all treasure I name unto myself, and I will be avenged on anyone who finds it and withholds it.” The stone is obviously very valuable. Bilbo could...

...concern for other people than yourself. Beowulf depicts selflessness when he avenges the death of Hrothgar's comrade, Aeschere, as illustrated when he states “Better for man to avenge a friend than much to mourn” (896-897). Even though Beowulf was not best friends with Aeschere, Hrothgar was, and since Aeschere was so close to Hrothgar Beowulf will avenge his death in respect. Beowulf does not ponder upon the consequences that avenging Aeschere's death will have. He is so selfless he does not even think about his own safety but he thinks about how to heal a wound for these people that have lost a notable comrade. Comparably, in the hobbit when thorin is lying unconscious awaiting death Bilbo becomes selfless and saves thorin. When lunging with his sword Bilbo disregarded his own safety because he is selfless and to him it was important that thorin survive and not face a cruel death. Despite facing two different situations Beowulf and Bilbo are similar heroically because they both are...
