The first stop on our excursion will be a fun one amid the Egyptian Fourth Dynasty, basically the period when the Great Pyramid was worked for the pharaoh Cheops (KEE-pos) around 2530 B.C.E., (Benton and DiYanni, 2008). Egypt is occupied and truly moving as of right now as this is the time period where they are building The Great Pyramid for their pharaoh and supreme ruler Cheops. Cheops is the second pharaoh of the fourth line of Egypt and ruled a unified nation alongside his relatives and chairmen. He is additionally the pharaoh the appointed the working of The Great Pyramid, which is one of the seven marvels of the world. Cheops was exceptionally occupied as pharaoh, battling effort in the Sinai, starting building ventures in Memphis, alongside The Great Pyramid. His rule is point by point on the Westcar papyrus, (Bunson, M. 2002). Existence in the wake of death is a major ordeal to the Egyptians and The Great Pyramid will be the tomb from which Cheops ka or soul will climb to the sky and join Re the sun god why should accepted be the father, (Rosalie, D. 2003). To the Egyptians existence in the wake of death is the perfection of their all consuming purpose. The pharaoh's live for a decent existence in the wake of death and the majority of the general population of the pharaoh's line live for and work towards that objective. Part of what makes this development and culture so awesome is the way they work for the brought together reasons for satisfying the divine beings and having a decent the great beyond. You see the general population trust that their great administration and confidence to their awesome pharaoh will help them to partake in his time everlasting,( Rosalie, D. 2003). The Pyramid is an important part of the pharaohs’ journey to the afterlife and will be decorated internally with prayers from the book of the dead along with food and everything the pharaoh will need in the afterlife. This particular pyramid is the final step in a long line of perfecting burial rights. The earliest forms of burial were in tombs called a mastaba. These tombs had an underground chamber and were rectangular in shape, but were built of mud brick. The mastaba evolved over time and got larger in size and then the step pyramid was designed by Imhotep during the third dynasty. This early pyramid was a series of superimposed mastaba tombs built for king Djoser. The final culmination of this is of course The Great Pyramid and the others built after it. This Great Pyramid couldn’t have been built without having housing for this large workforce that it will take to build such an architectural marvel. There are about 30,000 men not including their families in the villages surrounding the worksite and even more that come in from nearby Memphis. The workday is long, from about dust till dawn and the work is hard. As we walk through the opening in the boundary wall the site is amazingly vast and very busy with stone being brought up the Nile and laborers moving the stone in place while everything is being coordinated by the architects and their foremen. This cycle of work has been going on for about the last 20 years or so and the finished pyramid is a sight to be seen gleaming in the skyline with its finished white limestone.

I thought about where to go to next on my adventure. I knew where I would go next. I would go to America, before World War II. That would be the perfect place, the place where America knew true sadness. It would be the perfect place to go. My next stop was America, 1936. I remembered this photograph by Dorothea Lange entitled Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California. This is where I needed to go. If anything, this mother knew sadness. I knew that I could not find the mother, but if anything, I knew that I could find the Lange. I found her very quickly, taking sad pictures; however, she was taking the picture that I remembered. I stood in the background and watched. Finally, I walked up to Lange, and I asked her if we could talk. She asked me who I was, and I introduced myself simply as a “fan of her work”. She was confused by my statement, but she said okay. I asked if we could all speak, and they agreed. I found out that the mother was a widow, and that she was thirty-two (I had thought that she was inn her forties). She had ten children. They were seeking refuge, shelter, hope. The children all turned toward their mother as she stared off into space. The tone here quickly changed. I was overtaken by guilt and anger. How could the wealthy not care about the poor? Why did Lange not photograph all of the children? That would start a movement of some sort. Lange said that she was simply trying to make a living, but there was more to it than just that. There had to be some sort of a connection between Lange and the poor communities. I just did not know what it possibly could be. It reminded me of America so much: people out of work, with way to support their children, and trying to get a little bit of help. How could something that happened in 1936 possibly be the same sadness in Japan that was partying in China, but America in 2011? I did not understand it. I knew that at that moment no matter where you go life will hit you. I knew that I needed to leave, so with a heavy heart… I walked away. The mother looked at me longing for help, and all I could do was turn my head. As I approached the moment of leaving, I had to stop and think for just a moment. I was not sure if I could handle anything else; however, I figured that I must continue on my journey.

My last and final stop was the late 20th century, Today I have come a little closer to home; I have stepped into the 1960s. As I look around I see automobiles driving on roads and through McDonald’s drive thru, people shopping at shopping centers, and architectural buildings all around. There was an art show down the street that I attended. There was art by Robert Rauschenberg, Louise Nevelson, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Marisol Escobar, and Donald Judd. Each which used a pop art style and feed off of pop culture. My favorite is Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol created some of the most iconic works of the 20th century. His works tap into the culture of the 1950s and 1960s, using recognizable, images of consumer products, advertisements, and celebrities in order to explore the relationship between art and commercial images. Warhol is particularly notable for introducing the silk-screen technique for artistic painting; the almost identical reproductions he could create echoed the mass produced nature of consumer products and the media. He takes everyday objects and turns them in to works of art. Not just art, art that has a "hidden" meaning about pressures and how society really is. He shows this in Marilyn Diptych, suggesting that her suicide was a desperate escape. He also had a portrait of Campbell’s soup cans, one of every type of soup. It appears to me that he is making himself famous off Campbell’s soup cans because everyone seems to want one (Benton & DiYanni, 2008). I had a good time at the art show today and talked with many artist about their work. I talked with them about how they felt and about what inspires them to do their certain kinds of art. I am going to explore the music of this time. I am going to get some McDonald’s and go to bed. I was so excited I got to go to a Beatles show! They are a rock group from Britain that is made up of four musicians that I was able to meet, Ringo Starr the drummer, George Harrison the guitarist, Paul McCartney a lead singer and guitarist, and John Lennon a lead singer and guitarist. The music they play is unlike any that has been heard before; it is in the realm of pop rock music (Benton & DiYanni, 2008). Many songs such as I want to hold your hand, black bird, all my loving, and who can forget the yellow submarine. Teen girls flocked to them here in the 1950s and continue to flock to their music in the early 21st century. I am so glad that I got to have you with me along my journey, it was fun going from the Egyptian civilization then the early 20th century followed by the late 20th century which leads us into our time now. It has been a long journey through time, and I have learned so much I feel as if I have been traveling for quite some time, and I feel as if there is nothing more I can learn at this moment. I learned so much, and I saw how art was continually changing. Sometimes it would get better, other times it would be confusing. All the same though, it was an adventure. I think that I will just reflect on it for a short period of time. I wonder if anyone in the past remembers me, or if anyone in the present would believe me. I look at the clock on the wall, and for some reason, the time has not changed very much. It makes you think maybe I just dozed off and it was all a dream or maybe I really did time travel I mean after all this is the 21st century we have so many gadgets now and so many different ways to do things, who knows maybe there is someone now among us now that is from the future. Art is a funny thing it is everywhere you go and in everything you see, it is truly amazing somethings can make you mad and some can make you super emotional, some can be hard to explain but it is art and although we might not have been to all the other periods of the world their art is equally amazing. Art has changed in so many forms then until now. Until next time art historians..
