...Research and Application 3-35 1. Toll Brothers succeeds first and foremost because of its product leadership customer value proposition. The annual report mentions in numerous places that Toll Brothers focuses on Luxury Homes and Communities and high quality construction. Page 8 of the 10-K says ‘We believe our marketing strategy, which emphasizes our more expensive “Estate” and “Executive” lines of homes, has enhanced our reputation as a builder-developer of high-quality upscale housing.” Page 2 of the 10-K says “We are the only publicly traded national home builder to have won all three of the industry’s highest honors: America’s Best Builder (1996), the National Housing Quality Award (1995), and Builder of the Year (1988).” Toll Brothers seeks to realize manufacturing efficiencies for the benefit of its shareholders, but its customers choose Toll Brothers for its leadership position in the luxury home market. 2. Toll Brothers faces numerous business risks as described in pages 10-11 of the 10-K. Students may mention other risks beyond those specifically mentioned in the 10-K. Here are four risks faced by Toll Brothers with suggested control activities: * Risk: Downturns in the real estate market could adversely impact Toll Brothers’ sales. Control activities: Diversify geographic markets served so that a downturn in one region of the country will not cripple the company. * Risk: Large sums of money may be spent buying land that, geologically speaking, cannot...

...Individual Work Week 2 Charlotte Lewis SBM 2000-1001 Small Business Management Professor: Jean Goodall Everest College April 28, 2012 Edible Arrangements The thing that attracted me to Edible Arrangements is its great appeal to most people. The original store was located in East Haven, CT it opened in 1999, by Tariq Farid who partnered with his brother Kamran Farid (Wikipedia, 2012). After being successful in this original store they set about designing computer systems, training manuals, production and profitability tracking and supply chain management procedures they then entered the business of franchising in 2001 (ediblearragements.com, 2012). I feel that one of the reasons for their success is that they offer an alternative to the floral industries flower arrangements with the bonus that the receiver has a gift they can share with others and it’s healthy for the receiver also. This is definitely a niche industry and being the first and leader in the fresh fruit bouquet category has had it perks. In an interview on Bloomberg.com CEO Tariq Farid tells how he and his brother opened a small flower shop and had some loyal customers, and wanting to give their customers that little something extra they added edible arrangements in 1999 to a small section of their store, never even considering that it would take off as it did to become a company with over 458 million in annual sales (Bloomberg.com. 2012). In the same video Tariq explains that people our very health conscience...

...“Opening up the Suburbs”: An Evaluation of Affordable Housing in New Jersey American Literary Critic, Henry Louis Gates once stated, “If Martin Luther King came back, he’d say we need another civil rights movement built on class not race”. Although Gates statement is expandable by many examples, an area particularly demonstrating this inequality among classes, is exclusionary zoning. These local laws have been seen to detain lower-income individuals from residing in certain communities by mandating specifications on lot sizes, types of housing, and the number of buildings and occupants allowed. Consequently these factors trigger an increase in community housing costs, and thus drive away lower-income individuals. In the past few decades however, states’ tolerance for exclusionary zoning have dissipated, and new zoning requirements to enforce realistic housing opportunities have been enacted. Particularly, the state of New Jersey has chosen to tackle affordable housing through the judicially enforced Mount Laurel Doctrine. Yet even under its establishment, the doctrine’s history and evolvement has proven that “opening up the suburbs” follows with the opening of controversy. Since the doctrine’s creation, courts have been confronted with hundreds of litigations from developers and municipalities stemming from Mount Laurel’s questionable creditability and changing demands. The Mount Laurel Doctrine was originally created off the court decision made in Southern Burlington County...

...Chapter 3 Systems Design: Job-Order Costing Solutions to Questions 3-1 By definition, manufacturing overhead consists of costs that cannot be practically traced to jobs. Therefore, if these costs are to be assigned to jobs, they must be allocated rather than traced. 3-2 Job-order costing is used in situations where many different products or services are produced each period. Process costing is used in situations where a single, homogeneous product, such as cement, bricks, or gasoline, is produced for long periods. 3-3 The job cost sheet is used to record all costs that are assigned to a particular job. These costs include direct materials costs traced to the job, direct labor costs traced to the job, and manufacturing overhead costs applied to the job. When a job is completed, the job cost sheet is used to compute the unit product cost. 3-4 A predetermined overhead rate is used to apply overhead cost to jobs. It is computed before a period begins by dividing the period’s estimated total manufacturing overhead by the period’s estimated total amount of the allocation base. Thereafter, overhead cost is applied to jobs by multiplying the predetermined overhead rate by the actual amount of the allocation base that is recorded for each job. 3-5 A sales order is issued after an agreement has been reached with a customer on quantities, prices, and shipment dates for goods. The sales order forms the basis for the production order. The production order specifies what is to be produced...

...Lillian Combs PHI 105 - 21st Century Skills: Critical Thinking and Problem Solving November 3, 2011 Eric Speir Drug Abuse Among Teenagers The topic which I selected to write about is Drug Abuse Among Teenagers, which I am totally against any type of drug abuse because of the devastating effects it have on our future young people. Our nation has been trying to successfully overcome the problem with drug-abuse among teenagers for the past twenty years. Children from the ages of sixteen through twenty use drugs more than any other age group in America. (Life 123, 2011). One of the keys to combating this illness is through awareness. Learning the facts can help one see the risk that it causes. It is vital that we continue to raise community awareness as well about the nature and seriousness of this fatal disease. Nowadays, drug abuse among teenagers not only affect the individual, but also the family, and society as a whole. Some teenagers can use recreational drugs without any negative consequences, but for many others substance abuse can cause problems at home, work, school, and relationships leaving one feeling self-pity, isolation and shame. (Helpguide, 2011). The information that I am providing hopefully will give more insight into this substance abuse among our teenagers and what we can do to help eliminate this problem in our society. The effects which drugs have on the individual varies from how often they use them, how much is consumed, and how quickly the...

The death toll was calculated to be around 43,000 or more. Throughout his testimony, including his tales of bonding with the boy, he uses language that conveys his feelings during his experience, for example: pity. He expressed that he felt sorry he had to see the victims but was not able to do anything- and it truly leaves an impact on the reader- showing an unfamiliar perspective from a soldier on the Holocaust. ...National Hazards: Floods Francis Lopez Cathedral High School Abstract Floods are very dangerous natural hazards. Every year they cost millions if not billions of dollars in damages, to people everywhere. They affect a lot of people worldwide. Floods can also be caused by a number of events. Snow melts, tropical storms, and dam or levee breaks are just a few of the causes of floods. Floods often cause damage to homes and businesses if they are in the natural flood plains of rivers. While river flood damage can be eliminated by moving away from rivers and other bodies of water, people have traditionally lived and worked by rivers because the land is usually flat and fertile and because rivers provide easy travel and access to commerce and industry. Although you can lessen the chance of floods occurring in your area by moving, floods can still occur everywhere and affect everyone. National Hazards: Floods Floods are one of the most dangerous natural disasters on Earth. Floods have cost humanity millions of dollars in damages and so much more. They are also very fatal. Every year, floods kill 6,753 people. ...Delivers In May 1993 Domino’s paid $2.8 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of 41-year-old Susan Wauchop who was killed when her van was struck by a Domino’s delivery truck being driven on a highway in rainy weather.1 The family alleged that the 19-year-old driver was speeding to meet Domino’s guarantee to deliver a pizza within 30 minutes. Domino’s argued that weather and road conditions were the real cause of the accident and refused to change its 30-minute guarantee. Not only was the guarantee popular with its customers, it also set Domino’s apart from its numerous rivals in a highly competitive and crowded business.2 Domino’s Pizza was founded in 1960 when two brothers, Tom and Jim Monaghan purchased a pizza store in Ypsilanti, Michigan. A year later Jim traded his half of the business to his brother for a Volkswagen Beetle and Tom Monaghan became sole owner. By 1983, the company had expanded to 1000 restaurants. Ten years later the company was well on its way to owning over 4000 outlets within the United States, and over 500 outside the United States. In addition, over 1000 Domino’s Pizza restaurants were owned by others as franchise operations. Domino’s had become the fastest growing pizza company in the world. Analysts felt that the key to Domino’s rapid expansion was a promotion that it launched in 1984: guaranteed 30-minute delivery. Initially, the company advertised that if pizza was not delivered within 30 minutes it was free. This was later changed to a guarantee...
