The inspiring drama directed by Tom Shadyac in 1998, is based on the true story of a misfit medical student whose unconventional approach to healing causes headaches for the medical establishment but works wonders for the patients. The music in movies, more importantly in this scene effects the mood based on the tempo and another aspect music plays as a "natural background filler"(Giannetti 107). The music in the final appeal scene establishes the uplifting mood and foreshadows the actions. The final appeal scene is inspiring and brings hope to anyone who watches it. the scene is about Patch Adams appeals passionately to the medical board and the med students, and then is surprised by all the people he has helped over the years. The strong emotional sequence from patch pleading with the board and then when his patients come in and show him that all of his sacrifices and enthusiasm to help them. …show more content…
The music helps to establish a hopeful mood in the scene. The tempos of the music first very slow and heartfelt feeling as the violins are being played with rich tone color. Then transitions into a light, happier mood, with lighter keys played on the piano and sharper violins at the end of the scene. Tempo in the music creates transitional moods in the movie form scene to scene. Like in, “John Huston’s the red badge of courage”, “The protagonist . . . snatches a flag form a dying comrade and changes onto a raging battlefield” (Giannetti 215). When Patch is talking to the board and pleading with them, the music makes the scene emotional and the heartfelt, but then, his patients walk in and the atmosphere becomes happier and lighter with the higher softer tones in the music.
