...university is approximated by using a focus group, consisting of four learning team members. Constructs, such as tuition cost, travel expense and resource expense data from each subject will be explored. In order to effectively measure the information obtained from the focus group, controls are implemented on the data. This study assumes that each student travels to and from the campus twice a week. The first trip is made to attend class and the second trip is made so that each student can participate in a physical learning team meeting. Since the duration of each class is five weeks in length, the analysis used is based on 10 trips to the University of Phoenix campus. Each student will complete 10 courses per calendar year. The distance involved in traveling to the campus will be measured by mileage, price of gasoline, and tolls. Another measurement is tuition cost per course. The constructs for the tuition cost include tuition reimbursement and out-of-pocket expense. Travel expenses were calculated based on current gasoline average cost of $2.69 per gallon. Mileages per gallon calculations were based on 17 miles per gallon of gasoline from participant’s home to the University of Phoenix’s Bucks County campus and their return trip to home. Subject one, Tyra, travels round trip from New Jersey to Pennsylvania twice per week for school. That travel translates into 25 miles per day or 250 miles per course. Tyra’s gasoline expenditure is $3.95 per day which equates into $39...

...Case Study 13 Analysis Elizabeth Sapp University of North Carolina at Charlotte The situational analysis of Emanuel Medical Center (EMC) reveals a not-for profit independent hospital located in Turlock, California that is encountering financial troubles as it struggles to remain open. Changes in federal regulations such as the implementation of the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) laws and lower reimbursement rates for federally run insurance programs, changes in service area demographics, and the evolution of the services that locally competing hospitals offer have all contributed to five consecutive negative operating margins for EMC. (Harris, Vogt, & Gilinsky, 2004). Strategic Options Strategic issues are those events that affect an organization and its position within its environment. In the case of EMC the President and CEO, Robert Moen will need to discuss the options available to the hospital with other leaders through strategic planning. This is a process of developing steps for an organization to accomplish its mission and vision through strategic strategies. To make this process a success analyzing and understanding the situation is done by performing an external and internal environmental analysis along with refining the organizations’ directional strategies. In the end, EMC has five possible strategic options including, merging the hospital, selling the hospital, closing the ED, closing the hospital, or doing nothing and trying to...

...from company purchased business trips Facts: Latrell recently used his Delta Skymiles to purchase a free roundtrip ticket to Milan, Italy (value $1,200). The frequent flyer miles used to purchase the ticket generated from Latrell’s business travel as a CPA. Latrell’s employer paid for his business trips, and he did not get taxed on the travel reimbursements. Issue: How much income, if any, does Latrell have to recognize because of the purchasing an airline ticket with Skymiles earned from business travel? Authorities: IRS Announcement 2002-18 Conclusion: According to the IRS Announcement 2002-18, Latrell does not need to recognize any of the frequent flyer miles ($1,200 value) used when he purchased his round trip ticket to Milan, Italy. The miles redeemed were for a free airline ticket and he did not convert the miles to cash; so there is no taxable income from the transaction. Analysis: The IRS Announcement 2002-18 states “these promotional benefits may generally be exchanged for upgraded seating, free travel, discounted travel, travel-related services, or other services or benefits. Inquiries centered on the taxability of frequent flyer miles or other promotional items that are received as the result of business travel and used for personal purposes. Issue: Can Doug and Darlene change their filing status in 2009 from married filing jointly to married filing separately two years after their original return was filed to receive a refund for over payment Authorities: Reg. Sec. 1.6013-1(a)(1) J.A Haigh v Commr, 97 TCM 1794, Dec. 57,858(M), TC Memo. 2009-140 Conclusion: Doug and Darlene cannot amend their 2009 return to change their filing status. ...THE NONPROFIT SCANDAL OF THE YEAR: THE FIESTA BOWL Bill Jones EXECUTIVE SUMMARY – The overriding failure of the Fiesta Bowl’s Board of Directors (BoD) was its abrogation of its Duty of Care in managing the Nonprofit Organization (NPO). The Duty of Care requires directors of an NPO be reasonably informed about the organization’s activities, participate in making decisions, and do so in good faith with the care an ordinary prudent person would exercise in similar circumstances. This duty requires the individual BoD members pay attention to NPO activities and operations. Per a New York Times summary, top executives at the Fiesta Bowl funneled campaign contributions to local politicians, flew other Arizona elected officials to various points around the country at the bowl’s expense, racked up a $1,200 bill at a strip club and even spent $30,000 on a birthday party for the chief executive, according to an investigative report commissioned by the Bowl’s BoD. Lessons on internal controls from the scandal are important to sports programs’ cultures throughout the country. This scandal could determine how an NPO’s tax exempt status is overseen. The scandal also had implications for political contributions and NPO governance. FACTS OF THE SCANDAL Known in Arizona as the "Nonprofit Scandal of the Year," the Fiesta Bowl, the umbrella organization for four Section 501(c)(3) organizations the Arizona College Football Champion, the Arizona Sports Foundation, Fiesta Events, and the...

...average Senator worked only seventy-two of those eighty-three days. Senators made an average of approximately $150,000, with additional amounts paid to Senators with particular roles, such as Speaker of the Senate. When compared to the average salary earned by an university-educated Canadian of approximately $60,000, the compensation earned by a Senator seems far too high. The Senate is not fiscally responsible and other parts of our country could certainly better use these resources/funds. Consider how many underfunded schools, hospitals and other programs exist which could certainly make much better use of the money spent on the Senate. It is a huge injustice to spend so much money on an obsolete part of government. On a purely cost/benefit analysis, there can be no argument posited for the continued existence of the Senate. Senate Appointments A basic requirement before obtaining any political office in Canada is to be elected by the constituency. The only instance in Canadian politics where this is not the case is the Senate. Senators are not elected. Senators are appointed by the Governor General on the “advice” of the Prime Minister. Fifty-one of fifty-seven Senators appointed by the Conservative government led by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper were donors to the Conservative Party. [find another cite for this instead of this NDP cite] This might suggest that there is a link between providing funds to the presiding government and becoming a senator. If the stated role...

...vacation experiences at an outstanding value. In this paper, I focus on a crisis of Carnival Cruise Lines, which happened in 2013, and I will also give an analysis about how Carnival handled the crisis. In addition, I will give my own suggestions to this crisis management. Introduction of the crisis On February 7, 2013, the Triumph, one of Carnival’s ships, left Galveston, Texas, with 3143 passengers and 1086 crew aboard for a cruise, which was supposed to last 4 days. However, on February10, a fire broke out in an engine room on the Carnival Triumph, which was sailing in the Gulf of Mexico. The blaze was extinguished quickly and no one was injured, but propulsion systems were knocked out. Although the ship had two engine rooms, shared cabling between the two was damaged by fire, leaving only emergency backup power available. Triumph floated helplessly until the ship was towed back to Mobile, Alabama on February 15, which means Passengers had spent five uncomfortable days on the Triumph. The last five days for the people on Triumph were suffering because of limited water, cold food and dirty toilets. Stakeholder Analysis As a leading cruise company with the aim to provide best cruise trip to customers, this accident led to a crisis. The main stakeholders include customers (especially victims and cruise loyalists), travel agents, media and shareholders. The passengers on the Triumph are victims, so they are an important group of stakeholders in this case....

...CASE STUDY #2 INTERNAL CONTROLS: WILLIAMS OIL SERVICES SCOTT SALES SERVICES HUMAN RESOURCE ASSISTANT ACCT FIN: MANAGERIAL USE, ANALYSIS PROFESSOR JENNIFER COLEMAN February 7, 2016 Naomi M. Duncan INTRODUCTION Every business has a need for (and should be mandated to implement) Internal Controls. From a mom and pop storefront to a global corporation, fraud and errors (unfortunately rears its ugly head).
