On March 12, 1947, President Truman addressed Congress, what was said at the address is now known as the Truman Doctrine. The Truman Doctrine was a response to the announcement by the British Government stating that it would no longer provide military and economic assistance to the Greek Government in its civil war against the Greek Communist Party. The Truman Doctrine began with President Truman outlining the situation in Greece, stating that, “Greece must have assistance if it is to become a self-supporting and self-respecting democracy…” ( history.state).
