Last week's hearing of former FBI Director, James Comey, with the Senate Intelligence Committee answered some long-standing questions, but also raised new questions that both parties want answered. Comey was asked questions about a variety of topics, such as the Trump administration's alleged ties to Russia and the identity of an individual leaking classified material.
Trump's firing of the FBI Director raised questions about his intentions. Comey's testimony attempted to shine a light on the ongoing investigations of the Trump campaign's potential ties to Russia. Comey admitted that although the FBI was criticizing many of Trump's actions, he was not actually under investigation himself. Comey later revealed that he orchestrated the news leak of a private conversation between Trump and himself. The conversation concerned former national security advisor Michael Flynn, who was under criminal investigation for actions taken while a member of the administration. Trump asked Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn.
Some believe believe Comey's credibility is hurt by his admission that he leaked aspects of the Russia case in hopes to escalate that investigation. However, Trump was not the only one who Comey has revealed as attempting to influence an investigation. According to Comey, former Obama administration Attorney General Loretta Lynch approached him about the ongoing investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Lynch allegedly asked Comey to not call it an "investigation" but rather call it a "matter," among other terms. This made Comey question her objectivity.
