...“The Rise of American Authoritarianism” The greatest threat to democracy as a way of life, not just a political arrangement, but as an attitude of mind - is authoritarianism. Authoritarianism is stoked by fear, both rational and irrational, and it looks to a strong punitive leader who promises to use force to end threats by outsiders and persons "not like us." It seeks order and stability at all costs. It subscribes to a command-and-obey or "top down" or hierarchical mentality. This is directly opposed to a democratic or "horizontal" mentality, characterized by openmindness, cooperation, and respect for others as equals. In the article, “The Rise of American Authoritarianism,” Amanda Taub makes three claims: First, Donald Trump is backed by authoritarians who feel threatened by social, political, and economic changes in the U.S.; Second, the GOP’s appeal to traditionalism and law-and-order has attracted “a vast and previously bipartisan population of Americans with authoritarian tendencies,” insuring there will be more Trump-like candidates in the future; and lastly, since ”Democrats, by contrast, have positioned themselves as the party of civil rights, equality, and social progress…” they can be absolved of any charge of harboring authoritarians. Furthermore, this article states that Trump supporters are rigid, fear-triggered, authoritarian personalities - it's attempting to pathologize a political viewpoint. And that itself is a dangerous step towards another form of authoritarianism...

...personal opinion, I fear fiscal policy is too easily abused by politicians seeking reelection and the support of wealthy constituents. In this paper, I will analyze how how politicians have chosen to expand fiscal policy in ways that favor the wealthy and do not improve economic equality. Supporters of fiscal policy claim that cutting taxes enables the American to increase their savings, consumption, and investment (7). While tax cuts were observed in the 1920s and 1960s, expansive fiscal policy tax cuts quickly became associated with a neoliberal capitalist approach to governing, also including ideas surrounding deregulation, privatization, reduction of social services,...

...SUNYIT Human Resource Management MGT 318 Professor N. Laino Leadership Jeff Albright April 30, 2014 In the waning seconds of Game 6 during the 1998 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan found himself with the ball after stealing it from Karl Malone. Down by one, and with just 5.2 seconds left on the clock, Jordan rose up for a jumper that would end up being the winning points of the game. This win would earn Michael Jordan his sixth NBA championship. With every successful championship win, there is a leader who helped lead the franchise. Just as experienced leadership translates to success on the playing field, experienced leadership is essential in the business world. Leadership is defined as “the use of power and influence to direct the activities of followers toward goal achievement. That direction can affect followers’ interpretation of events, the organization of their work activities, their commitment to key goals, their relationship with other followers, and their access to cooperation and support from other work units” (McGraw 418). Often times, people who are leaders are people of power; it’s how these leaders use their power to get followers to achieve goals. Someone who is powerful is often known for their ability to influence the behavior of others. In the workforce, most leaders are managers. There are three organizational forms of power that managers can use to influence employees: legitimate power, reward power, and coercive power. Legitimate power...

...vvvGlobalization has greatly impacted the United States and its citizens. It has also directly challenged Washington’s perspective on foreign affairs, political parties, and local divisions. Due to globalization the United States involvement in other countries, since World War 1 has dramatically increased. It has also greatly increased the necessity and prevalence of our involvement in foreign alliances when it comes to war, trade, and global security, which Washington directly warned against. As far as political parties, globalization has increased their importance and the influence of them in economic and social spheres of life. Finally, globalization has increased the number of possible titles and “appellation[s] derived from local discriminations,” to divide ourselves. First, it is important to determine exactly what Washington’s stance on foreign affairs, political parties, and local divisions was and where they stemmed from....

...Humans have a primal need to make sense of the environment in which they live (Prooijen 1). That same primal urge of curiosity drives us to question the events that take place and shape daily lives. Naturally, we want to feel in control of our life, but when that control comes into question we want to blame others to deflect blame off of ourselves. The feeling of no control is a prime factor in the development of a conspiracy theorist (Prooijen 1). Conspiracies often circulate around people or events of great magnitude. Theorists try to explain this imbalance of power with the existence of a powerful and evil enemy. By creating the “man behind the curtain,” someone who pulls on the strings of fate, everyday people have a reason for why things...

...immigration authorities. President Trump and his administration are trying to defund these cities. Because they blatantly break federal law and offer a place to harbor crime. This is a moral issue because a lack of federal funding would hurt cities. It would also hurt both the citizens and non-citizens of that city. The lack of funding could also make those cities, compliant with federal immigration authorities. It would make undocumented immigrants scared of the police, and less likely to report crimes and testify in court. It’s wrong for us to even if a person has committed a crime to deport them. They have tried hard to build a better life here. It would be wrong for us to just get rid of them. They might have fled war, abuse and other horrifying situations. To just send them back to that environment would lead them to get seriously hurt and injured. If sanctuary cities get defunded it will negatively affect the mental health of undocumented immigrants. This will lead to an increase in their anxiety over fear of getting deported. It could also lead to an increase in depression and suicide in the population. This is why it’s a moral issue defining sanctuary cities will badly affect the undocumented community. There would be a lot of disagreement on the course of action. Some people strongly believe that these people are illegal invaders. That sanctuary cities are breaking the law and that all undocumented should be deported since it's breaking our laws. They would also say that...

...Trump 1 I’ve decided to do this leadership profile assignment on the Donald Trump for several different reasons. First off real estate is my profession and it’s what I truly love and believe in. Also, I feel with the current economic situation that we are in; it would be a very interesting subject to report on. Since we are in the worst economy since the Great Depression and a terrible housing market, it would make it more interesting. However, there are some people like Donald Trump that are taking advantage of the economy and thriving and growing their business. Also, Donald has experienced his own rough times before. In the early 1990’s, he was billions upside down and on the verge of losing everything. Consequently, he worked his way out of it and has grown his business since. He has ventured into new businesses and has gone main stream into television. Since the Trump Organization operates in many different aspects of real estate including everything from: purchasing, brokering, and leasing, etc. I feel it would be excellent topic to do this assignment on. Donald has had many major accomplishments in his life and has plenty of failures as well. Most recently, he is known for his reality show “The Apprentice.” His show he is both the host and the producer. Each week contestants are given a task and if you are successful you will get to stay another week. If you team loses, one of your members will be brought back into the board room and someone will get...

...Blake Groesbeck RST 255-B Term Paper 5/4/15 grosbck2 Term Paper: Bigger Stronger Faster In our everyday lives every action has a positive and negative effect, where individuals are constantly using ethical lenses to judge their stance on a certain situation, whether they know it or not. After having the chance to watch the ESPN 30 for 30 Bigger Stronger Faster, it was an extremely eye opening experience. The documentary took an objective stance on the use of anabolic steroids where the National Institute on Drug Abuse defines anabolic-androgenic steroids as, “a synthetic variant of the male sex hormone testosterone and that “anabolic” refers to muscle-building and “androgenic” refers to increased male sexual characteristics.” The use of anabolic steroids for sports/recreation is illegal and is considered by the United States as a controlled substance, however the use of anabolic steroids for medical use is legal. The ethical question I am asking is, “how can the United States “claim” that the use of anabolic steroids for medical reasons be ethical and can “help” someone when they “claim” that the use of anabolic steroids for sports/recreation to be unethical and will “hurt” someone?” In order to take an objective stance I will use three of the five ethical lenses provided in class. The five ethical lenses that were provided in class are: the Utilitarian Approach, the Rights Approach, the Fairness or Justice Approach, the Common Good Approach, and the Virtue Approach. ...

...Not only does immigrant reform represent one of the most complex and divisive political issues in America history, it also illustrates one of the greatest paradoxes of American democracy and the foundation of the United States. Even though America was founded on the values of freedom and built by immigrants, the country has a contentious history of antagonizing its existing immigration population and discouraging potential migrants. This historic trend of anti-immigration attitude and legislation stems from the unfamiliarity and uncertainty associated with migrants, which creates vulnerability and represents a threat to the stability of the nation’s national security, both internal and external. Not only is the influx of immigrants viewed as...

...this topic lies in many questions. What events took place that led up to the moon landing? Who was involved? How and why did we put a man on the moon and be the first? History itself can give us these answers but there is also one question that seems to still have people talking to this day and that is, did it really even happen or could it possibly be the United States of America’s greatest hoax? The Cold War began approximately in 1945 at the end of World War II. The United States, Great Britain and some other allied counties decided they wanted to contain communism in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R) and China. Although the United States of America and these communist enemies did not get in any physical battles during this war there was definitely a lot of unspoken threats and the flexing of muscles between the two super powers, the United States of America and the Soviet Union. One of the two biggest contests or “races” between the two countries began when the United States of America found out that the Soviet Union had developed a long range nuclear missile. This struck fear in the United States of America and started the Arms Race. Each country was quickly developing new nuclear missiles and technology in the attempt to surpass one another or to show each other who had more or as we say, “one-upping” each other. The same concept applies to the...
