...“(Un)safe Sex: Romancing the Vampire” In this article Backstein explains the important shift that occurred during the start of the Twilight Series and similar blood sucking tales. Furthermore today’s vampires are viewed as appealing and moral. The movies likewise portray vampires as having a feeling of discretion. They demonstrate the problems they face to defeat their allurements. Backstein also emphasizes the importance of female roles in these films. Her quality, remarkable abilities, being the object of affection, or a mix of every one of these attributes. She is the concentration of the story. Moreover, the film Twilight consists of the share of blood and savagery from multiple points of view but it also possesses a big deal of romance along with a paranormal curve. ...for poster analysis are Slumdog Millionaire, Twilight and Bride and Prejudice. Each poster is thoroughly scrutinized in order to see how posters inform the viewers of what to expect in the film. It is also highlighted that a good film poster comes up to the expectations of the audience of the film by representing all the genres incorporated. Introduction Film itself being a genre of performing art has its own multiple sub-genres. Hybrid-genre, also commonly known as cross-genre, is a practice of blending two or more genres. In the film posters selected for this report, I have tried to highlight this genre-blend by critically analyzing the posters. For a single genre type film, it is comparatively easy to analyze the posters since each and every element of the poster is contributing to one genre that the film is based on. Hybrid-genre film posters, on the other hand, are trickier to analyze. Not only their audience can miss some of the information present in the posters but there are also chances of the posters failing to project what actually is the sole purpose of the posters, or some posters may be intentionally designed so as to focus one dominant genre and leave out the rest for the audience to find out after watching the movie. Since hybrid-genre can be a blend of any number of different genres, to focus my research, I have chosen romance to be one common genre in all the film posters while other genres may differ. Romance being a genre in itself has its specific features...

...NOTE: This review is the fair and unbiased opinion of someone with extremely little knowledge of the Twilight series. I watched the movie with a few die hard fans who I talked to after the movie, and I will work some of their thoughts into the review. Another much loved book series has been brought to life in the form of Twilight, which despite having nothing in common with the Harry Potter series, will undoubtedly draw comparisons because of the furor and craze surrounding it. The main difference between the two, however, is that the Harry Potter films are generally good and solid films. Twilight, despite having done a couple things right, is not. As a story, I will admit, Twilight is very catchy and interesting. Now I see what all the hype is about. If I was a young girl, I would go nuts over this stuff too. It's not just a vampire and a human falling in love with each other, but because of the two leads, it's one of the best on screen romances of the decade. This, however, is severely hurt by the fact that Twilight boasts easily some of the worst writing and editing I've ever seen. Let's not forget about the horrid VFX and pasty makeup, either. It's one of the cheesiest films of the year, and can definitely be put in the category of "so bad it's ALMOST good". Yes, I just invented that category. The 'allure' of the film appears to be the character played by Robert Pattinson, who ironically was previously known for his role in the Harry Potter series. Pattinson succeeded...

...is and was portrayed in a number of ways. In the early days when they were just folklore, vampires were blood sucking predators and feared pale stalkers. In Vampire God: the Allure of the Dead in the Western Culture (2009), discussing the popularity of vampires in society, Mary Y. Hallab says that the folklore vampire is constantly compared to the other supernatural beings like witches and werewolf’s, and today’s concept is also a confused being, a zombie? A lover? Hallab states that “vampires are only those figures—folkloric, mythical, or literary—who are dead humans who are still capable of behaving as though they are alive.” Today, vampires have become a culture of their own, and are a huge part of mainstream pop culture. The Twilight Cullen’s and Sesame Street’s Count Dracula have a whole new appeal on adults and children. The appeal is not always good. According to Vampire Gothic, which is about vampire gothic cultures in United States, Teresa A. Goddu discusses a teenage vampire clan that was discovered in Murray, Kentucky, that was found participating in role-playing games such as drinking each other’s blood and killing puppies. Goddu explains that it’s the raw supernatural aspect of vampires that drew the teenager’s attention. We will discuss the gothic culture and how it relates to vampires later on in the paper. Looking back, no matter how these creatures are portrayed they have proven to be remarkably adaptable...

... The media creates false expectations for the rest of society. It’s the false accounts- the fictional stuff- that sells but also becomes the expectation in real life as society models the behaviors from the movies. It is a paradoxical concept that the entertainment industry creates movies with actors in roles that need to be exaggerated in order to sell; this obviously implies that the lifestyles portrayed on the television are not representations of the average person’s life. However, when viewers- normal people- watch these television roles, these false lives are assumed to be the norm for real-life so that creates a false system in which we approach interpersonal relationships, such as in dating. Romantic realism deals with creating stories of high-level stimulation, not something boring to bring a movie to life, etc. Unfortunately, this influence from the media and the humane aspect that we are never fully satisfied with what we have are vast contributions for the increase of friends with benefits in contemporary dating culture. When one looks at what plays on the television, the perfect, utopian, or ideal accounts of the characters’ lives raise the standard for how normal people are expected to behave and interact. As television and movies promotes the sense of casual relationships or casual sex without relationships, society assumes that as the norm and, thus, expects real-life circumstances to play out in the same way. If actors play roles of ordinary people but are...

...Conventional Gothic gender roles are challenged by Carter through the tongue in cheek nature of some of the stories in ‘The Bloody Chamber’ most notably, Puss in Boots in which the supposed ‘innocent’ and ‘naïve’ female wants to kill her husband in order for new love. Not only this, Carter also uses the theme of feminism to challenge stereotypical female roles in stories which inadvertently also happens to challenge the roles of women in Gothic literature. Her use of feminism seems to be a result of her upbringing where she was heavily influenced by the first and second wave of feminism that achieved gains in gender equality giving way to more sexual liberation and freedom for women. One of the stories where conventional gothic gender roles are most notably challenged is ‘The Tiger’s Bride’ where the female, the daughter of a man who gambled her away to a beast, is the protagonist of the story and seemingly in charge of her fate, whether it be sexual or in loyalty. This mirrors ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, where Katherina is initially in charge of her fate and her sexual fate before she is “tamed” by Petruchio, the story also juxtaposes ‘The shrew’ as it is her who is tamed, while in ‘The Tiger’s Bride’ the protagonist is the one who tames the beast by choosing him over her own father. The contrast in storylines emphasises how gender roles in general have been severely challenged by Carter, giving the effect of female empowerment especially contrasting the male empowerment in ‘Taming...

...Being a ‘Team’ Player: The Linguistic Alteration of Identity in Online Communities Dedicated to The Hunger Games In the first chapter of Gender and Language, Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet discuss how the connection between language and gender enables a “continual performance” of gendered interactions (33), which, in turn, enables “social reproduction” founded on the separate categories of male and female. They argue that language not only reflects gendered categories but “constructs and maintains these categories” (34). Being such strong categories, they claim it is “impossible” to escape gendered behavior and not influence others to give gendered responses (50). In a later chapter, Eckert and McConnell-Ginet discuss how “gender schemas and ideologies” are implied and interpreted (203). Using an example from a university setting, the authors illustrate their point that the assumption of gender may not result from “the particulars of our exchange but in familiar gender stereotypes” (204). If no specific clues or pronouns are given during the exchange of information, presuppositions relying on stereotypes often emerge. Not only do stereotypes and behavior fill the linguistic gaps, but the power in individual words alone is a cause for concern. Sally McConnell-Ginet explores this further in her article “Words in the World: How and Why Meanings Can Matter.” She argues that single words can carry multiple meanings in each use whether the speaker means them to or not...

...Stephenie Meyer is well known for her creation of the Twilight Saga, a famous and memorable series that became even more popular when the movies hit theaters. So it’s understandable why her book The Host has been shadowed by her contrasting publications. Though despite its lesser demand, this book is definitely worth reading. The Host is a captivating story that challenges Meyer’s other work as it tangles readers into its exquisitely written story that is favored by many. When most people think of science fiction thrillers, they think of green guys with huge black eyes invading the planet- one lone savior to protect it. Maybe two, if it happens to be a romance. This is not the case with The Host. This romantic science fiction thriller will make you look at extraterrestrial-infested, post-apocalyptic earth in a different way than just the generic ideas Hollywood has drilled into our heads. It breaches topics in ways nobody has ever thought of before, or worded so well. She changes perspective on aliens...
