The client is planning to purchase his coowner’s shares at a price to be determined based on their company’s recent financial performance. The company’s financial statements, prepared by the client’s co-owner, contain accounting choices and judgments that students should identify and evaluate using critical thinking skills. This case is suitable for use in introductory and intermediate financial accounting, and in introductory auditing and assurance courses. Accompanying the case is a set of teaching notes and assessment rubrics for use by instructors. THE CASE The Setting Wiki Art Gallery, Inc. (WAG) is a privately owned business started in 2006 by two students. An Excel spreadsheet enables instructors to embed up to seven operating problems or potential accounting issues into a fictitious consumer electronics manufacturer’s current year financial statements. Stevens ABSTRACT: This series of four short cases is designed to help students develop the skills to research the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification and other authoritative literature. It also is designed to help improve students’ ability to analyze and critique the complex issues that often surround the accounting for revenue recognition. The case scenarios describe transactions in which students must decide whether, when, and how much revenue to recognize. ...Case Set Instructions Which cases do I complete, and when is each case set due? See the syllabus. How do I prepare the cases? Start with a cover page that provides class information (ACCT 4400, etc.) and the names of all team members. The cover page should also include the specific cases or parts of cases completed by each team member along with any reviewing responsibilities. The answers to the three cases in each case set must follow the order listed in the syllabus. All materials must be typed double-space using Times New Roman, 12-point font with 1 inch margins on all sides. There are exceptions to this rule: * Tables produced in Excel used as audit work papers and/or to show calculations do not have to be double-spaced. These tables must be copied and pasted into your write-up at the appropriate locations. * Table notes can be in 10-point font and do not need to be double-spaced. This real-world case presents financial reporting issues around the commodities cost shifting strategy used by Diamond’s management to falsify earnings. By delaying the recognition of a portion of the cost of walnuts acquired into later accounting periods, Diamond Foods materially underreported the cost of sales and overstated earnings in fiscal 2010 and 2011.
