...Part IV Katie Schulz Mrs. Polski Modern Problems May 2, 2013 Introduction~ Animal experimentation began in the early 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with the Greeks performing the first experiments on living animals. Ever since these early periods there has been a search to answer the question of whether animal testing is ethical. This question is proposed due to the suffering of animals during medical experimentation. Veterinarian, Peter M. Henrickson, found this to be the case in his experience during a veterinary class. The research began on Rodney a shepherd mix. “The first thing we did was neuter him, a seemingly benign project, except it took us an hour to complete the usual 20-minute procedure, and an anesthetic overdose kept him out for 36 hours. Afterward, he recovered his strength quickly and felt good” (Henrickson, Par. 4). They then proceeded to do an abdominal exploratory, opening his abdomen and then closing him again. “This was the first major surgery for any of us, and, with inadequate supervision, we did not close him properly. By the next morning, his incision had opened and he was sitting on his small intestine. Hastily, we sewed him up again, and he survived. But it was a week or more before he could resume walks he had come to eagerly anticipate” (Henrickson, Par. 6). After Rodney’s slow recovery they once again put him under anesthesia. “We broke his leg and repaired it with a steel pin. After this, Rodney seemed in almost constant pain, his temperature...

The universal understanding of the labor force encompasses working people as well as those looking for employment opportunities. Most scholars portray it as a dynamic concept that is a product of the political, social and economic factors within a given country. The most predominant notion today is that changes in the labor force participation, as well as population changes, has culminated in a labor force that is more diversified. In specific, relatively more women are represented in the labor force compared to the previous centuries. The diversity in the workforce shaped the economies of developed countries such as America...

...Running Head: ETHICS IN AN ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT Ethics in an Academic Environment Americans want to be more, have more, do more, and know more. America is a choleric, driven culture and that is one of the very reasons that make it such a distinguished nation. Americans in their desire for more may have compromise their ethics. Are people willing to get ahead at any cost? Most people in American society live busy, hectic lives and this affects all facets of life. In the academic environment, students face grave pressure from others as well as internally to perform well (McCabe 2001). Plagiarism is one aspect of ethics in academia where students may find themselves compromising. In a study by Bill Bowers of “over 5,000 students on 99 different campuses, 75% of the respondents had engaged in one or more incidents of academic dishonesty (McCabe, 2001, pg. 220). Although this study is a frightening and awakening find, as Carter, Bishop, and Kravits (2007) stated, “Plagiarism usually starts accidentally during research” (Chap. 8, wk.2). Time restraints, improper planning or just misinformation can all lead to plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is still unethical and illegal. In America’s demanding and competitive society, ethics may have taken a back seat all in the name of progress. Technology has allowed people to enjoy a more advanced, more efficient quality of life, though...

...Burns & McCallister Mark Stone Ohio University Legal & Ethical Environment of Business -MBA-560-VC November 20, 2013 Burns & McCallister Ethics & Global Business Being a successful global business is a balancing act. It is easy to assume that what works in America will work abroad. Nothing could be further from the truth. Multi-national companies need to be aware of the unique set of values, customers and traditions of the foreign countries they wish to do business in. Some areas of international business ethics are easier to define than others. For instance when it comes to working environments it is easy to say child labor performed in unsafe and hazardous environments coupled with unreasonable working hours is wrong as it goes against the ethical treatment of human beings but is discrimination against women in business management equally as wrong? Let’s explore this question in more detail. The Dilemma The company Burns & McCallister has come under scrutiny from a series of reports by both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times regarding their policy on female executives managing accounts in certain nations. This has been surprising since Burns & McCallister is known for their equal treatment of women. Working Mother magazine lists Burns & McCallister as one of the top fifty firms in the United States for employment of working mothers and by Working Woman magazine as one of the top ten firms for women. However, the dilemma...

The fields of media studies and media theory are dedicated to the analysis and understanding of the myriad media through which information is communicated. Ethical theories are reviewed in relation to virtual project management, such as participative management, Theory Y, and its relationship to utilitarianism; Kantian ethics, motivation, and trust; communitarian ethics, ethic of care and egalitarianism; Stakeholder Theory; and the use of political tactics. Challenges to e-ethical leadership are presented and responses to these issues discussed. The conclusion presents four propositions for future research. ...Abstract Insider trading is a serious crime. The general public is held accountable, and yet, it is legal for members of Congress. There are several cases involving members of society being prosecuted for their illegal activity of insider trading; while Congress has exempted their members from acting on the same type of information. This type of conduct has serious legal, ethical and moral considerations. This paper will address the definition of insider trading. The legal, ethical and moral considerations of insider trading will be outlined, through a snap shot of the legal precedence recently in the press involving congressional behavior. It will further look at cases that have made headlines in past years, to show the distinction of what can happen to the general public who participate in insider trading. During a recent article by Parloff (2011), he stated, “The problem arises with respect to market-moving information a congressman learns in the course of doing his legislative work.” This comment is at the heart of the issue involving insider trading and Congress. The people elect members to Congress to act in their best interest. When the people of society feel members of Congress have violated that trust under legal, ethical, or moral wrongdoing, the members of society make decisions based upon those standards set by Congress. Thus members of society participate in insider trading knowing it is legally wrong. Insider Trading Insider trading can be a severe crime...
