Uncle Terry When my mom died, I wasn't aware that she had siblings. The only person I had met in my mother's family was my grandmother. After my mom's funeral, we lost touch, and I didn't give her any more thought. That was until I read my mom's obituary in May 2014. The obituary said that my mom was survived by a brother, whose name was Terry Cartwright. I thought it might be a long shot, and I didn't have anything to loose, so I decided to search for him. I went online, and there were several Terry Cartwright's listed in Ohio. I knew that I would be traveling to Michigan soon, so I decided to make a side trip to visit my mom's grave in Ohio and find a little piece of my mom and her extended family. I was ecstatic to have this connection to my mom. I traveled to Michigan to visit my cousin Deb. I stayed with her for a couple of days and then I left to go to Warren, Ohio. My mom is buried there, and I thought maybe the burial records would give me an address to my grandmother if she were still alive. I arrived in Warren, and since it was so late I checked into my hotel, then decided to wait until morning to go to the cemetery. I woke up excited the next day because I was one step closer to meeting my uncle. I showered, dressed and left to the cemetery. When I stopped by the office and spoke with the office manager. I asked her if there was a way to find out who was responsible for my mother's grave site. She informed me that there was a record of who had paid for everything and that I could have a copy. She printed me out a copy, and it had my grandmother's address and phone number on it. I thanked her and left. I went to the address, and it was the same house that I had visited when I was little. I knocked on the door, and nobody answered. The neighbor saw me knocking and walked over to see if I needed any help. I explained who I was and what I was looking for. She informed me that my grandmother was still alive and that she was at church. She would be home later that evening. I was excited to learn that my grandmother was still alive. I was hoping that she had softened in her old age. I would soon learn that wasn't the case. While I was waiting, I decided to do some sightseeing and grab a bite to eat. After a few hours, I returned to her house. She was standing outside with her neighbor. I walked up and explained who I was and what I was doing there. I wish I had been wearing a suit of armor. This woman didn't have a kind word to say about anyone. My mom was worthless! My dad was worthless! My uncle was worthless! I was standing there speechless. I was always taught not to be rude to my elders and the nasty remarks going through my head probably would have made her think everything she was saying was true. I politely stood there and chatted with her and answered her questions about my siblings. She could hardly remember their names. I asked about my uncle and she said she didn't know where he was. I got ready to leave, and I told her it was nice to meet her again. Maybe she's grouchy I thought because she is lonely. As I was getting into my car, her neighbor handed me a piece of paper with an address and phone number on it. I now knew where my uncle was. I went back to my hotel to regroup and pack my stuff. I was going to Columbus, Ohio to meet my Uncle Terry. The next morning I woke up, took a shower, loaded my car and headed to Columbus, Ohio. During the three hour drive, I had much to think about. What was he like? Did he and my mom look alike? Did he know about me? Was he married? Did he have kids? I was nervous as I pulled up to his house. I walked up the sidewalk and knocked on the door. The butterflies fluttered in my stomach. A man as round as an apple and resembling Santa Claus answered the door. I explained who I was, and he started crying. He pulled me into a bear hug and wouldn't let go. He explained to me that he left Texas when I was around three. He thought he would die without seeing me and my siblings again. He introduced me to his family. I felt so welcomed, it was almost surreal. Not only did I have an uncle, but I have an aunt and two cousins. I was ecstatic to have this connection to my mom. I spent a week in Columbus getting to know my Uncle Terry and his family. When it was time to leave, we all cried. I didn't want to come home. I wish that he lived closer. I would love to be able to see him on a regular basis. It's been a year since I have seen him and my cousins and I miss them horribly. He calls me weekly and asks me if my bags are packed and if I'm on my way. I think that it's time to plan another trip north. I can't wait to see all of them again. I wish that I had found him sooner. I feel like I found something that has been missing from my life. I just wish that she was still here to enjoy him also. I love the fact that I finally have a piece of my mom, and he is only a phone call away.

Mice and Men Racism

...sitting around the picnic table doing what they do, and in the center of it all was a table and at the center of that table was me and my uncles; Rene, Joel, Henrique. We were just talking, in Spanish, about how full we were with the food and like an anonymous wind blew him in out of nowhere, a man stood in the middle of the party like a statue short on one side, tipsy, and one half of his shirt tucked in and bottle in hand, with glazed eyes he glared at us almost in a panorama. Looking like he was about to keel over he opened his, what I know now as a gaping hole of a mouth, the second he spoke nothing but hate flew from his mouth racial slurs came out targeted at everyone at the party even my youngest cousin got cursed at by this vulgar man. At the end of his tantrum he collapsed on the grass, at that moment I rushed to see who my racial attacker was and before me lying unconscious reeking of booze and other fluids was a white male with a beard, which looked like he never heard of a razor before. Clawing his way through the crowd of relatives my uncle Rene picked up the man on two his shoulder to a lone picnic table and set him down, he told us to get a cool bottle of water for the man, but of course we all refused, why would we want to help a man that so bluntly insulted our elders and our children for being something that they didn’t choose. My uncle insisted so I helped with the water and after a few minutes the man came to, almost vomiting on the...

...organizations by getting them drunk to get information out of them. The second ethical issue is that when Marry lost her job Albert lost a lot of money in high risk markets with his father’s friend’s portfolios. These men were old and that was most likely their retirement fund. Another HUGE ethical and I believe legal issue would be that Albert used his uncle to gain access to law offices and gather information of certain clients and businesses. Mary also used information from her father to help another company take over the one he worked for. Using this insider information is an issue. Legal issues that they face are the emails that marry forwarded with obscene messages and images that caused her to lose her job. As well as Al dealing with blackmail from Barry to give him the IPO information, or else he’ll report him for spinning. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each decision that albert could make or has made- Although Alberts and Mary’s use of insider trading made them a substantial amount of money and enhanced their portfolios; it was still illegal and they could both lose their jobs. The same goes for the use of his uncles keys to gain access to certain law offices. A disadvantage from marry forwarding emails would be that she lost her job. The disadvantage of Albert giving into Barry’s blackmail is that the boss could find out and they both lose their jobs. Although the disadvantage of not giving into the demands would be that he possibly loses his job as well. If...

Personal Narrative: Coyotes

...Now we're going to talk about calling coyotes in with an electric caller. The first thing that needs to happen is going out and buying a pretty expensive caller to use the cheaper ones do not work as well. Then we need to find a good spot to call them in at, the best luck I’ve had is sitting by some hay bails about 200 yards from a creek and staying very still. After we have found all of these hunting materials we need to get a gun. I use a 243 savage about any type of gun will work. I have put a little extra on my gun just to make it better. I have put a Bipod on it so when I’m sitting on the ground there is some way to balance it without it going everywhere. I have also put a scope on it just so I can see farther and get a better look at...

Plight of the Chicken

...Cynthia Howard ENC1101 Essay #2 - Narrative Essay Due Date: February 18, 2011 Username: CHoward4 The plight of the chicken Every time I see a white chicken, fond memories resonate through my mind about the special bond and relationship that I had as a five-year-old girl with my pet chicken. On that day, a lesson was learned about family values and pride. There are many events that have occurred throughout my life that have impacted me as an adult, and this event was one of those events. I can still remember the events that played out during that day, and I believe that I can hear the sounds of the chicken echoing through the woods when I go home for a visit. I was raised on a farm in Kings Mountain, North Carolina with my father, two brothers, and one sister. Although I had siblings to frolic in the woods with, and do fun activities like swim in the creek, or build tree houses, I still felt a need to have a pet for companionship. I spoke to my father about the possibility of getting a pet of my own, specifically a kitten, and he decided that I was too young to tend to the needs of a kitten. He did allow me to pick a chicken from his large coop located in the woods above the house as my pet. If I could prove to my father that I was able to keep up with the responsibilities of caring for the chicken, I may be allowed to get a kitten. This was a ritual that my father had with my older siblings with respect to their desire to have a pet. I remember spending an ample amount...

...the office and he challenged his co-worker. I can relate to this so much because I have a family full of athletes and we have been challenging each other for years in every category of sports. I want to say first off running a 5.77 is extremely slow at any age. But I can just imagine my family members (which are all guys) challenging me to a foot race and actually going outside and doing it. He said guys will take small challenges and that is extremely true. I and my family will argue about who is the best at video games because that just what guys do. But on the other hand I have a few uncles who would never waste their time to sit down and play a video game. Because that isn’t something that men usually do. He also mention that men are more serious than guys which is very true my uncle usually doesn’t talk but when he does he means business I would categorize my uncle as a man. But when he said that guys cheat I would have to disagree with him on that simply because I feel like I do all the things that he would consider a guys does but at the same time I have never cheated on my girlfriend. Another thing that he said that I would disagree with would probably be when he said guys like neat stuff I think that this could very easily fall into the men category as well. I do however think that he is correct when he says that guys don’t have a rigid moral code because I know some guys who I could trust my live with and on the other hand I know some guys who...

Easy Rider

...Douglas Salayka Prof. Major Easy Rider Easy rider was a film I couldn’t understand. I have to say I didn't like it. I somewhat respect what the film did for the industry but still I cant full respect it for the scenes of them having sex at the graveyard. That was a bit to much for me. The movie starts out with a cocaine deal, The 2 main characters then wanted to use the money and jet. The scenes of them riding around on motorcycles used music from the time like Born to be wild. At that time it was very new to be using tracks like that in films. For that reason I give the movie bonus points because it did something nobody ever really did at the time. So the 2 men on the road trip find themselves in all sorts of trouble. The film actually used real drugs in the scenes that depicted them using cocaine and marijuana. To me that's crazy, but I know Dennis hopper had to do with this as he was a user at the time. I even read that Jack Nicholson actually came out and said it was real marijuana that he smoked. In class we touched upon why Jack Nicholson died but the other men didn't. I think we came to a consensus that it was just luck that they survived a bit longer but I still don't get that. The biggest thing I want to talk about is the drug tripping scene in the graveyard. Hopper didn't get permission or anything to film there and they were basically having sex on the tombstone of a dead child. If something like this happened now the media would be all over it saying how unforgiving...

Why Is Monty Python So Popular

...Television show called Monty Python’s Flying Circus is a series of about 30 minutes long short films. The first episodes arrived in 1969 when five British comedians, Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Jones, Eric Idle and Michael Palin with the assistance of Terry Gilliam, the American animator, decided to create an unordinary show. It was broadcasted on the BBC between 1969 and 1974, consisted of 45 episodes, categorized into 4 seasons. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Python) Monty Python’s Flying Circus is a result of the new social class which, according to Jesse Bier, was formed in the sixties between working and upper classes. (Bier 1968: 427) Their sense of humour was based on intellectual jokes, which are clearly seen in the show....

Foxconn

...Analysis of Foxconn Introduction Foxconn, or Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, was founded 37 years ago in Taiwan by Terry Gou. The company initially started as a local computer component manufacturer. Over the past decades, Foxconn had been continuously growing to become the world’s largest electronic components manufacturers with the consolidated revenue of 59.32 billion US dollars in 2010. As the largest electronic manufactures, Foxconn provides electronic components to major electronic devices manufacturers across the world. Its clients include Apple, Amazon, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Dell and HP. Broad Environment Sociocultural: In the past year, Foxconn’s image has been tarnished by reports of labor protests and employee suicides. These were the result of harsh working conditions, unfair wages and a lack of communication with the media. The sociocultural trend has driven Foxconn to improve its working surroundings and its impeccable image in society. In addition, Foxconn has remained highly confidential on its internal information. Today’s society has required the company to communicate frequently with external stakeholders. This foreseeable trend will require Foxconn to become a more transparent company in the future. Political: Foxconn’s manufacture sites are located in developing countries. These countries have the trend to change in laws and regulations frequently. For example, China has changed its labor regulations in recent years. In addition, Foxconn...

Coordinator Debate

...14 Why start at ‘Dasein’? • “Zunächst und zumeist”: The quest to start without assumptions makes Heidegger examine how we live ‘first and foremost’ and ‘most of the time’. • Where else should we start? 15 Being-in-the-world ‘Always already in the world’ -> ‘Being-in-the-world’ And by ‘world’ we don’t mean a physical space that we can move around in. We rather mean something like ‘context’ NB. In “What We Talk About When We Talk About Context”, Paul Dourish makes the distinction between context as a representational (positivistic) and as an interactional (phenomenological) problem 16 The iconic example of a hammer What makes a hammer a hammer? Ein Ding / Thing? No, Zeug / ‘Equipment’ ”Equipment is a solicitation to act” 17 The door handle 18 An experiment! Vorhandenheit -> Zuhandenheit Present-at-hand -> Ready-to-hand 19 The origin of science Heidegger: Firstly and most of the time we are not scientists. Science only starts when the equipment breaks down. Consequence: Technology precedes science. Both historically and logically. Don Ihde: ”All science is technoscience” ”No instruments, no science” 20 Heidegger: Die Frage nach der Technik Another iconic contribution to the philosophy of technology. ...Nicole An Introduction of Foxconn Case Study The organization I want to research is Foxconn Technology Group, which is an electronics contract manufacturing company. Terry Gou founded Foxconn in 1974. The major fields that Foxconn focus on are consumer electronics, digital content, automobile parts and the development of new energy resources and new materials. Foxconn owns many high-end clients worldwide, such as Google, Amazon.com, Apple Inc., Microsoft, Dell, Sony, Nokia and so on. The well-known products that the company manufactures contain iPhone, iPad, iPod, PS 3 and Wii. What’s more, Foxconn assembles 40 percent of all consumer electronics products sold in the world. From 1988, Foxconn started building factories in Mainland China. Until now, it has 13 factories in China with almost one million employees. And after several years development it has factories in Asia, Europe, and South America now. Besides those glamorous sides, Foxconn is facing many tough management challenges. As a manufactory company, Foxconn has hired a significant number of young employees (age between 20 and 25) to accomplish its huge amount of orders quickly. So, a series of problems came out. It hit the headlines following a series of suicides and fights among its workforce in recent years. Thus, Foxconn began to be noticed about its poor working environment, strict working discipline, high working pressure, corporate culture, and worker’s psychological problems. So...

...destructive plan, the actual bombing, the investigation of the case, and the aftermath. Giordano hooks the reader by implementing a very dramatic introduction of the events of that morning. “It was a day no one would soon forget” (Giordano 5). The first chapter is devoted to the life of Timothy McVeigh, his biographical information, and additional facts of interest to the reader, such as McVeigh and a friend bought 10 acres of land in New York and told their parents that they wanted to use the land for hunting. In reality, they planned to use the land as a survivalists’ bunker. It was surprising to learn that McVeigh wanted to be a Green Beret but failed the required psychiatric test. Chapter two is devoted to the alliance between McVeigh, Terry Nichols, and Michael Fortier. The author suggests that the Ruby Ridge incident and the Waco incident concerning the Branch Davidians were turning points for McVeigh. The author argues that the Murrah Building was targeted for several reasons. The first reason being that McVeigh knew the building contained several government offices and agencies. According to her, McVeigh believed that he could retaliate against those who were responsible for the Waco incident. Another reason was the way the building was constructed and its shape. It was made of glass and U shaped, which would contribute to increased devastation. At this point Giordano plays upon the emotions of the reader by printing a photograph of the staff and children of the daycare center...

Mythology in Literature: the Sword of Shanarra

...Mythology is the study of myth, but how does the study of ancient myth guide today’s modern myth? Mythology has been brought to life through art, film, and theatre, but those are just a few ways myths have been transformed through time. In some cultures myths are still passed down through oral tradition, with an expectation from the listeners to be wowed and awed at the telling. This essay we will look at Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara. Brooks’ work is done in the literary art form, but how does his work relate to our world view of myth? What is used in his work as mythic symbolism? Is it modern myth or old myth presented in a new light? These questions will be addressed in this essay. In the Sword of Shannara, Brooks takes the reader into world that resembles ours today, but is indeed very different. Brooks weaves a tale that could be seen as a past long forgotten or a look into the future, where mythological creatures are no longer myth, but living breathing beings that coexist in the human world. The myth in his work is not the characters he has created, but the legend and tale of an ancient sword, which symbolizes the truth that not all beings can accept about themselves. Brooks’ tale parallels the everyday life and thoughts that exist in the world today, but outside of the normal bounds that one would be used to. Common across myth throughout time and seen here again in Brooks’ work. Brooks introduces the young man who is on a quest, but with a twist...
