...Understanding How We Learn Cinthia Bachtel Family-Centered Health Promotion July 29, 2012 Understanding How We Learn Learning, according to Wikipedia, “is acquiring new or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information”(Wikipedia, June 2012). Learning begins when we are born and ends when we die. How we learn is a complicated process. Depending on whose research you read, there are varied opinions as to how many styles of learning there are. In 1992 Neil Fleming designed a tool to identify individual’s preferences for learning which he named VARK. VARK is an acronym for Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing, and Kinesthetic. Answers from a questionnaire are tallied. Based on the responses, it is then determined where a person’s preferences fall. VARK can be used to develop strategies for learning and improving communication. The results point out how one takes in information, processes that information and is able to communicate the information to other people. In the most recent questionnaire the learner’s results showed a four-part or multimodal learning profile. The four scores were high enough and similar enough that the learner can approach learning in many different ways. They have each mode available depending on what is being presented. The fact that this learner chose forty four answers out of sixteen questions signals that more than one mode is used...

...Development Plan PSY301 Individual Development Plan When focusing on how important it is to have an individual focus it is as equally important to realize what is key to focus on when developmental goals and emotional competencies are considered in both my professional and personal life. While learning the different competencies I realized there are certain ones that I need to focus on improving specifically in my professional life in my goals to be a manager in a healthcare organization in the near future. One competency that I feel I have to focus on developing is Emotional Self-Awareness. My goal is to become more self-aware of my environment and surroundings, develop an understanding of my goals and how to get there and focusing on what is needed for me to get to where I want to be. Self-Motivation is an emotional tendency that I need to focus on learning how to gain and simplify so I can reach my goals. This competency is important in both my personal goals and professional goals to gain an achievement and drive to improve my current techniques and learn new ones that will encourage me to want to learn how to be a better person and to encourage me to want to meet a standard of excellence in my commitment as a mother, wife, employee and a person in this very unique world we live in. There are many areas of developmental improvement that are essential towards maximizing my professional understanding and focusing on gaining and improving my management and ethical skills...

...other wise known as andragogy. It will be based upon me recently working in a HR graduate position at the Google office in Sydney. I will be covering what andragogy actually means and the types of principles of learning that are suggested by this theory by Malcolm Knowles. Then I shall be writing suggestions on how the Google training manager could use the principles of the theory andragogy in skills training at Google, on the principles they have yet to introduce in their training. Finally I will list four references that I will recommend to the HR manager at Google that I found gave me a better understanding of andragogy. Introduction Learning is "a relatively permanent change in behaviour (or behaviour potential) resulting from one's experiences" (Delahaye, 2011: 31). When adults are learning, we call this andragogy. As we already should know, adults learn vastly different to how children learn (pedagogy). There are many key differences in the learning department when comparing children to adults, such as instead of asking what, adults would ask why. Andragogy is a theory that holds a set of assumptions about how adults learn and it holds a great importance on the value of the process of learning. At the Google office in Sydney, the environment and people there are great to work in, and it feels as though the way they have set up, helps the workers get ideas and allows them to do work at a steady pace and still get it done. They have...

...Auditory (A), Read/Write (R) and Kinaesthetic (K) types of learning approaches. The Visual (V) learner learns best by the use of information by visual means (using of charts, mindmaps, and other visual aids). The Auditory (A) learner understands best by hearing the information. The Read/Write (R) learner learns best when the information is shown in written word or displayed. The Kinaesthetic (K) learner learns best with practice or simulation (Liew, Sidhu, & Barua, 2015). In the past, institutional study methods were confined to lectures and self-study. A major part of education depended upon lectures. Information technology had widely changed the modes available related to knowledge acquirements for 21st century students. With a variety of educational aids available these days, it is important to identify the most efficient way to complement and deliver knowledge in order to help the students to become exceptional learners. In this way they can become the best students possible. Types of Learning Kenesthetic Learning Through this questionnaire I discovered that my personal learning style is kinesthetic. Kinesthetic means that you prefer to learn using experiences, or hands on action (Kinesthetic Strategies, n.d.). An example of this would be practical exercises, hands on experience, or real life application. These definitions hold valid in my case as I have a propensity to learn...

...content of our language like task ordering, how we say it, and how we describe individuals or group members While nonverbal communication is all behaviors including facial expressions, body position, posture, movement, hand gestures, and paralinguistic behaviors (Cheesebro, O’Connor & Rios, 2010). Therefore, good communication skills are imperative, because knowing how to get your point across effectively so that your audience understands exactly what you are trying to say helps close the communication gap among people. There are several principals involved in both verbal and nonverbal communications. The first principle of verbal communication is recognizing that every language has a significant value. Even though there are many different languages in the world, they are all equally important (Cheesebro, O’Connor & Rios, 2010). The second principle is recognizing the many dialects all of the languages that exist in the world. For example, Americans who live in the North have a different accent then those who live in the South. Moreover, those who live in the North may have a hard time understanding people from the South because of their accent (Cheesebro, O’Connor & Rios, 2010). The third principle involves understanding what one person says in their own language or dialect may not mean the same thing to someone else in their language or dialect. As a result, it can lead to a miscommunication because of the lack of understanding between the different languages. The...

...Organization Behavior in the workplace is essential for managers to utilize and be aware of for the success of the organization. Organization Behavior is the study of how people respond, interact in specific situations, and offers managers tools in order to help them better understand why and how certain things are happening within the organization. Management has four basic functions that they lead their subordinates by; the four functions are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (George & Jones, 2012). With these four functions and the understanding of the organizational behavior of the employees, managers will be better apt to lead, and achieve more of their set goals. The goal behind organization behavior is for leadership to have a better understanding of the personalities and abilities of their employees. Organization behavior also helps managers lead by a systematic way of analyzing behavior rather than following intuitions or gut feelings they have (George & Jones, 2012). In order for management to successfully understand organization behavior and help it enhance the functions of management, management must first understand who their employees are, how the environment is, and of course always keep clear lines of communication. Aside from understanding the environment and employees personalities, organizational behavior also means management is open to communication, clearly identifies goals that are achievable, creates a positive work environment, and...

...My Final reflection Learning isn’t about how much you know but how you apply it in to your every day life. But understanding how you learn will allow you to understand the world around you and making sense of it. By identifying your strengths and weaknesses of a task can be very beneficial to how you will succeed the task at hand. Understanding how you learn by using your learning patterns. Your learning patterns are sequence, precision, technical reasoning and confluence. Sequence is the type of learning patterns were you like direction, order and organization when starting a task. Precision is were you like details, you identify, and explain a task or when starting a task. Technical reasoning is you build, fix, and like to figure out tasks on you own. Confluence is that you like to thing out side the box. You brainstorm, create, and you take a chance with your tasks or in life. My views have changed dramatically with this class. Now being to under stand how I learn I feel that I can take on anything and come out feeling good about it. Being able to understand how I use my learning patterns has helped me so much not only with this class but with work, home, and even my kids. Learning is apart of use even when were not realizing it. I am a dynamic learner I use my patterns one to two at a time. I think in steps, like clarification, and like to have as much information when starting a task. I have the mind to problem solve when it comes my way. Sequence 30- I am a planner...

...After reading the communication and career success chapter one I learned a lot about how important communication really is. I thought of communication is as it was just conversation with people and nothing more. I did not know how important communication was until now. I feel like I have been living under a rock due to the fact of my lack of understanding. But learning how important communicating is when talking to a person or a group of people. I understand clearly why some people get hire at a job faster than others. I can recall several times when my friends and I would go job hunting and one of them would get the job faster than me. I see it did not mean I was not qualified for the position at the job but I was not good at what I wanted to do. My friends were always good...

...My Advice on Communication in Relationships Cindy Warbritton Interpersonal Communication Comm 200 Jennifer Williams December 6, 2015 Dear Cindy and Wesley, When studying communication skills one can learn many ways to be able to express oneself to another person without misinterpretations. Using these communication skills can help in having a more successful relationships and relationships can become stronger. Communication is the key to people having self-esteem, self-concept, and self-image and these all play a part in how we communicate. Self-disclosure and understanding gender differences play a role in communication, as well. In relationships it is important to use communication skills and understand how another communicates. There are barriers in communication and these barriers can affect how one communicates. Oftentimes misunderstandings occur due to these barriers, but understanding and learning will help to alleviate those misunderstandings. While communication is one of the most important parts of a relationship, barriers must be broken down so misunderstandings do not occur or are limited. In one study it has been said the major barrier to communication is the tendency to evaluate, judge, approve, or disapprove what the other person is saying (Rogers, 2001). Of course there are many barriers such as cultural, types of language, gestures, body language, and many others. It is said The United States has many cultures and with these cultures comes different...

...is an important part of the daily life, as an adult and even as a young individual. Every one of us has to make financial decision to spend money for vital needs such as food, clothes, home and more. The question is whether to start with financial education as part of school program or to postpone it for a later stage in life. For me, I support this idea that financial education for teenagers is necessary. In many countries the discussion about financial education are getting more serious due to financial problems of young generation. Some people believed that financial education should be considered a mandatory subject at school. The common problem for those young people is that they don’t know how to spend money in right way. As we can see many advertisements often carry out the message, “Only 10 dollars a week, no deposits” which is misleading those young one think that living in debt is normal. Financial education is one of the solutions for this problem we mention above. The basic idea of financial education as a core school subject is to teach those young ones to understand the concept of using money and to estimate a risk of borrowing money to buy something in the future. For me, I support this idea that financial education for teenagers is necessary. The general factors that make financial education should be introduced as compulsory subject are children acquire an understanding economic, financial concepts with age, to be a tool to improve low levels of youth financial...

...PLAY: It’s the way young children learn A special supplement to the Children’s Advocate, based on a policy brief from the Bay Area Early Childhood Funders (References at www.4children.org/play.htm) generation ago, kindergarten was supposed to get kids ready for school. But now everyone is talking about the importance of “school readiness” before kids get to kindergarten. That’s why many parents, anxious for their children to succeed in school, want early care and education programs to have children sit at tables using work sheets, drills, and flash cards to learn letters and numbers and even starting to read, add, and subtract. But preschoolers learn differently from school-age children: play is essential to early learning. Play is the main way children learn and develop ideas about the world. It helps them build the skills necessary for critical thinking and leadership. It’s how they learn to solve problems and to feel good about their ability to learn. Children learn the most from play when they have skilled teachers who are well-trained in understanding how play contributes to learning. Most child development experts agree that play is an essential part of a high-quality early learning program. Play is not a break from learning—it’s the way young children learn. A time following teachers’ instructions. Several studies have shown that children learn more from educational activities that support their own interests and ideas. Some researchers have found evidence that...

...parties to grasp each other’s cultures. Learning and understanding the culture of a potential business partner comes way before the dotted line and depending on who grasps cultures better will be the difference between a company or its competitors making a deal. The world is a much smaller place than it once was, and one would think that given that fact it would be easier to grasp intercultural communication; however, learning and understanding other cultures brings with it an array of challenges such as onstage and backstage behaviors, how people learn and want to be communicated with, how certain cultures view and respond to other cultures, these and other barriers present enormous challenges to intercultural communication and to doing business globally. Getting a deal done internationally is enough of a reason to learn about other cultures as stated above if it makes dollars it makes sense, but learning another culture is very intricate process. “The failure of companies that go international usually occurs because someone didn’t understand the why of culture. Companies need to know the reasons why people think as they do and value what they do. Then the way companies and people act will be comprehensible and even predictable, and companies will avoid heavy business losses and failure.”(Beamer & Vamer, 2008, p. 28) The first step in intercultural communication “involves self-analysis, self awareness, and understanding.” (Beamer...

...In this paper we considered the concept of How People Learn HPL framework that was used by a National Academy of Science Committee to organize what is known about learning and teaching (National Research Council, 2000). The framework's includes four components where we to have "mini theories" about learning and teaching: * What should be taught, why it is important, and how this knowledge should be organized (knowledge-centeredness) * Who learns, how, and why (learner-centeredness) * What kinds of classroom, school, and school-community environments enhance learning (community-centeredness), and * What kinds of evidence for learning student ^, teachers, parents, and others can use to see if effective learning is really occurring (assessment-centeredness). Teachers must learn to balance and integrate all four components of the HPL framework if they are to teach effectively. Let us consider each component in detail.
