Context Level Diagram This context diagram shows the scope and boundaries of the Training Information Management System. In this diagram, we see that the central process, which is the TIMS, will interact with six entities, which include the corporate client, the training administrator, the instructor, the student, the course, and the accounting system. Moreover, the interaction among these entities will involve six different data flows. The corporate client will be provided a training summary. The training administrator will receive training reports and will supply schedule decisions. The instructor will supply completion data and receive a class roster and course assignments. The accounting system will receive data regarding accounting. The course will receive course data from and supplied data back to the system. The student will request courses. When their request is processed, they will receive a confirmation and an invoice. The student can then submit a payment.
Level 0 Diagram The training administrator will submit schedule decisions which are processed by the manage course scheduling process. The course management scheduling process will supply information about the course offered. This information might include course times, schedules, descriptions and so forth. The manage course scheduling process will also receive information from the courses. The Manage Course Scheduling process stores data in the training data database and retrieves it form there when it needs to use it again. The Manage Course Scheduling process provides course assignment information for the instructor and it stores the current schedule in the schedule database. The instructor submits course completion data to the Maintain Training Records process, which processes the data and stores it in the Training Data database and retrieves it when it needs to use it. The student submits a request to register for a course, which is processed by the Register Students process. The Register Students process receives data from the Schedule Data database. The Register Students process sends a confirmation and an invoice to the student once the course has been registered. The student can then submit a payment. The Register Students process sends account data for the registered student to the accounting system. The Register Students process provides a class roster for the instructor. The Register Students process stores registration information to the Student Data database and retrieves it when it has to use it again. The Maintain Training Records process stores data in the Student Data database and retrieves it when it needs to use it at a later time. The Produce Reports process retrieves training data form the Training Data database. The Produce Reports process sends training reports to the training administrator and a training summary to the corporate client.
Case Tools Case tools are powerful software that system analyst use to help them develop and maintain information systems. These tools make it much easier to build information systems because they help you simplify difficult task, such as maintaining full and accurate documentation for a complex system or building business models. Case tools can reduce cost, increase production, speed up development, and improve the overall quality of the finished product. Three examples of case tools are the Visible Analyst Case tool, System Architect, and Rationale Software. Visible Analyst Case tool can generate many types of models and diagrams. The charts and diagrams can be integrated with a central data repository. It also provides extensive help features and error messages to assist the user in their tasks. System Architect is a modeling and design tool that that can be used to build enterprise systems in full alignment with business requirements. It is a fully integrated modeling tool to unify the enterprise with the complete business and system information management. The tool provides numerous diagrams and definitions that are keyed to a particular view of the system. It also includes extensive tutorials to assist in learning features of the program. A third example is IBM’s Rational Software Architect. Rational Software Architect uses model-driven development and the UML to produce applications and services (Shelly & Rosenblatt, 2011).
