Using examples outline the ways in which urban areas have reimaged themselves to attract visitors. (10 marks)
Multiple places have reimaged their cities to boost up their economy some of these are Glasgow and Nottingham. Firstly if we start at looking at Glasgow then take a look at Nottingham we’ll be able to compare them both to get an overview of what makes them unique and know.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and the fourth largest in the United Kingdom it is up towards the north. Glasgow has reimaged itself using clever techniques for example to show its visitors and the local people themselves it treasures its history as once being part a world leader manufacture in ships, engineering and trade they left one Crain making it into a landmark and building a visitor attraction around it although this may sound boring to us many people find this amusing its one of which they have used this to encourage visitors to spend money locally as people go to visit this particular attraction it also pulls them towards local towns where they can look around new places. In 1980 Glasgow tried to reimage itself by flagship development and invested its money into 3 main cultural infrastructure to show visitors although its passionate about its history, Glasgow also wants to show it has a personality to it and to show off its creative side Burrell Gallery one of the largest attraction in Glasgow displays a range of art work from major artists this can conduct aspiring artists or those who are just curious to get to know what Glasgow is about to be inspired by the Burrell Gallery and want to see more of what Glasgow has in store. A second investment is the library Glasgow has invested in libraries this to reflect to visitors or those who are looking to get an education (university students) that it can provide the necessary resources and is a great way to encourage people to read more especially children. The third large investment is the Concert Hall in the year that it was opened 1990 it became the European city of culture to make sure this lives on massive events take place in the Concert Hall of Glasgow to be able to unite people from different mixes of culture together in one place. Big events held at the concert hall enables other people from different cities to get to know Glasgow better and get a gist of what the people are like and the natural atmosphere by doing this it builds up a great reputation for Glasgow. Nottingham on the other hand started reimaging itself using different sectors an example of this is investing in universities to be able to attract leading companies, a project that was created was the science park which was brought from East Asia this was a success as Nottingham is known for its science facilities, more students from around the world are coming to devote their education in Nottingham because of it.
Moreover Nottingham has rebranded its shopping centre by opening more Selfridges and up street shops its aims is to target shopaholics into coming to visit Nottingham as London maybe known for its big stores and busyness other people may refer to Nottingham as a place to shop peacefully. This influences people to come in from close by cities to shop in Nottingham increasing the economy, but also creates more job vacancies attracting those who need a job to come to Nottingham. Nottingham itself is also known for the large company headquarters such as Eon, Mercedes, Audi and much more due to these being here it attracts people to come into Nottingham as they come to look cars they also get to see the great entertainment Nottingham Holds. Nottingham has opened new pubs, restaurants, food courts all to attract those who are up for a night out or a day out with family to spend it in an area they can be fully satisfied.

Referring back to Glasgow as a way to fully show it is a mixed community, they’ve made more open space this means 40% of Glasgow are open spaces such as park for people to enjoy the natural clean environment a way to show people it is also an environmentally friendly area they have made cycle paths much bigger and promoted other transport ways than cars. Not forgetting as a way to illustrate to other towns Glasgow lets people have an individual voice to be heard many projects that are done, residents are actively involved to let their opinions be known by doing this it means those who are investing in a project know they can get 100% satisfaction knowing people will be happy with the outcome.
