I have been a member of three Varsity Sports teams at Anacortes High School for the last four years. I played on the Varsity Volleyball team as a freshman, the Varsity Basketball team as a sophomore and the Varsity Track team since my freshmen year. I will graduate AHS with eleven varsity letters. I was the captain of the Varsity Volleyball and Basketball teams my senior year. My junior year, I was a starter on both the volleyball and basketball teams that went to state. I helped lead both of my teams to top eight finishes in the state. At the basketball state tournament, I was awarded the WIAA Sportsmanship award for my team after playing our first game of the tournament. I was awarded the 2A All-State Honorable Volleyball Team my junior year …show more content…
During the first game of the season, I tore my calf muscle and sprained my ACL and MCL. After visiting multiple doctors, I was told that my basketball career was over and that I would be out for the rest of the season and part of the track season. As you can imagine, I was devastated that it was over before it even began. I could have quit and left the team because of my injuries. However, I was chosen by my teammates to serve as the team captain at the very beginning of the season. I took this role very seriously so rather than quit, I continued to attend all games and practices to support my team. I wanted to continue to be apart of the team even if I was not on the court. I assisted Coach Welk with drills and showed my constant support for my teammates. After two months of sitting on the sidelines, I was cleared by my doctor to start walking and jogging again and began physical therapy. After two weeks, I was on the court with my team and part of the starting five and was able to play in the last couple games of the season. The Declaration of Independence specifically states that all "men" are created equal, leaving out women, just as the Constitution originally denied women the right to vote.
