The America I believe in is everyone getting an education. Can you imagine if you could not go to school because of your culture, gender, or race? I am lucky to live where I do because everyone is welcome to go to school and get an education. The veterans fought for us to all be able to go to school. The America I believe in is brave/strong, because the military fights for us to be safe and free. In some places in the world, getting an education is rare. In Mogadishu, Somalia, 36% of girls go to school. It’s very unfair how some countries do not...

...Veteran’s Day is the yearly event where people remember those who died for us, and our freedom. As an 8th grader, I’ve come to realize what a truly special event this is and why it is so important not only to me and my classmates but our country as a whole. At Rockcastle County Middle School, Veteran’s Day is a really big deal. Teachers, staff and principals work weeks before November 11th to make sure everything is perfect for the men and women who gave their all. After all, how much is too much when we are recognizing the people who gave it all for us and our freedom ? In the past two years, I have witnessed many hours of preparation and planning for this very special day. Teachers decorate their doors, students decorate the halls and our gym is decked out in red, white and blue. As a school and community, we want to make sure that our Veteran’s know without a doubt that we honor and respect each of them for their courage and bravery. Students work on speeches and the music is perfect. Veteran’s are greeted as if they are royalty and to some degree they really are. With all the work and preparation that goes into this day our school is gradually transformed into a living tribute to all who served. The Signal is there to take special photos in order to capture the events and the guests that we so warmly welcome. In my opinion, everyone, especially the Veteran’s, are excited about this heartwarming day. As a young girl, I have heard the stories my step-dad has...

...Another Veteran’s Day has arrived and like any other previous year, there will be ceremonies, celebrations, and re-runs of classic war movies (or documentaries for the more serious armchair generals). Discussions and commentary about veterans-related issues will fill TV screens and the papers as well. Yet, beyond the parades, flag waving, and commentary, what does Veteran’s Day mean to veterans themselves? Growing up in Eugene, I hadn’t really thought much about it. My father is a Vietnam veteran but had never spoken about his experience when I was younger. Without a military base nearby, the topic of veterans was all the more foreign and distant. But, my perspective would completely change after joining the military and a particularly poignant...

...With Memorial Day right around the corner, I've seen a lot of posts telling me to remember what Memorial Day is all about, that it's more than just a BBQ. They are beautiful and inspiring and while I appreciate each and every one, I just have to say that I'm not likely to forget. I will remember always because I think about it always; on Memorial Day, on Veteran's Day, Armed Forces Day, D-Day and the anniversary of Pearl Harbor... and every other day of the year. Maybe not every minute of every day but at least once a day, something reminds me of the sacrifices that others have made on my behalf. I'm not a weepy or sentimental person by nature but over the last 10 years or so, I've cried a million tears in the names of soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that I don't even know. It doesn't take much. A news article, a Facebook video, a song on the radio... all of these bring to mind a picture of courage, honor, commitment and sacrifice, things we may not stumble across too often in our daily lives but that are the very essence of every one of our troops. In my home, in my heart, these things are revered. I have cried at news articles reporting one more who will never come home. I cry at homecomings, too, but those are tears of joy. I cry for the things they've missed and the families who've missed them and I cry for the people who will never understand what their sacrifice really means. And Friends, I want you to know that I cry for your sons and daughters...

...hits your funny bone, except all over his body. The Navy veteran from Fort White, Florida was out cold for six days and presumed dead at least once after the blast in May 2004. He woke up six days later in the Bethesda Naval Hospital, about 6,000 miles from where he was assigned in Iraq, he said. His wife, Diana Herrick, told him his left leg had been amputated and that pieces of shrapnel had lodged in his lungs and neck, damaging his spinal cord and leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. And out of his 42 comrades, 33 had been wounded and five killed. As Herrick struggled through a painful recovery, Diana said she lived in Fisher Houses, homes near major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers that provide free lodging to the families of veterans and wounded military members who are being treated. The Fisher House not only saved the couple thousands of dollars in transportation and housing costs but also provided a support system for Diana from families who knew exactly what she was going through, she said. Without Diana close by, Peter said he wouldn't have made it. After serving for nearly 18 years in the military, I can personally attest to the value and effectiveness of Fisher House. I’d like to encourage you to become involved, by donating what you can- be it time, money, frequent flier miles, hotel points, or even gardening supplies and household goods. The project included collaboration with the college’s choir and fine arts department, Alabama Aviation Center director who donated four airplane noses, local radio host and personality who narrated the event, Enterprise High School JROTC who presented the colors, and local U.S. Army surplus store owner who provided uniforms and artifacts. Showcased in the event were reproductions I had created of historic military aviation artwork which veterans signed to create a lasting memorial. The purpose of the Veterans Day project was two-fold. I wanted to share with my community the inspiring perspective of America’s wars as told by military aircraft nose art and take them on a walk through history. At the same time, I wanted to use the...
