...All About Me Everyone defines themselves in different ways. Everyone also finds different things important to them. If I were to choose three main things that are the most important in my life at this moment; I would choose, family, friends, and education. These three things have helped build who I am as a person today. Family has always been important to me. Without my family I would be out on the streets like a lost dog. Both of my parents have done their best to raise me and get me to where I am today. My older brother, Hector, has always been there for me. He is the reason I am not afraid to speak my mind. My younger siblings, Denise, Nemo, and Viviana, have all taught me to be more patient than I was. Patience is something I lacked greatly until they came around and it is something that is majorly needed in life. Speaking my mind has been both positive and negative for me. I tend to say what is on my mind at all times and...

...values in my life that are very important to me. My values that I carry with me all the time day and night originated from my family, friends, and teachers that are important in my life. The people that have influenced me and taught me most of my values is my family. My family is the people that have been there with me through the “good” and “bad”. They are the people who taught me the “dos” and “don’ts” in life. My parents are the ones who made me who I am today. By being there everyday of my life my family has taught me the meaning of loyalty, I’m a smart, loving, caring, trustworthy, hardworking, and successful because my parents helped guide me in the right direction. They will be there to support me until the very end. I don’t know what I would do without my family. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be the person I’m today. My family has taught me never to give up and to keep going even when times get rough. They have instilled in me to reach my goals and strive for the best. I will reach my goals in life to the best of my potential. With this in mind, I go to school everyday to reach my short-term goal of graduating with honors and start my next goal of becoming a sophomore in college. My family has taught me everything that I believe in such as religion and working hard for what you want. When I got to school I get taught many things from my teachers, which helps me become a more well rounded and educated person. My friends are also the people who encourage me to be a...

...A few Things I have learned in my 18 Years Life tosses a lot of lessons, some are difficult to learn and some are easier, it’s all about how you handle it. Something’s that life wants you to know, are little and stupid and seem life they don’t have any significance to your life. However, it is either going to educate you not to do it again, or it will be a amusing story to tell your friends down the road. The little things make life a little lighter sometimes where as the large things helps you open your eyes and helps you in the long run. Life has taught me numerous things. Everyday I learn something new, adding to that list. One of the very first things that I recall learning, is to not lie on the ground attempting to look underneath the vacuum when mom is in the middle of vacuuming. For some individuals, this lesson is one that does not need to be learned, but for me, it was something I had to learn. Spending hours of crying, as my mother pulled every strand of hair out, and hours of my mom being annoyed yet laughing about it anyways because how bizarre is it, that I got my hair stuck in the vacuum. While facing the pain, I thought I learned that I should steer clear of housework; my mom on the other hand, did not. Something else I have learned is that telling someone that they look ill or worn-out, isn’t going to make him or her feel better. I, of all people should know, this because if someone were to walk up to me and say something like that, my heart would...

...The thing that makes it's so unique are those unique Milestones that I have in my life. Those milestone have helped me grow as a person and become the young woman that I am today. When I experience those Milestones each one taught me something different and gave me a responsibility. Having these Milestones shaped my life for the better. One of the first experiences I remember is starting Pre-K. When Pre-K started I was very excited and thought it was one of the best days of my life because I could ride the bus and go to school with my older sister. In pre-k I learned at school is not all about fun, you are there for a reason. Another thing I was excited for around the edge seven or eight was washing dishes and cooking. Washing dishes and cooking was very fun to me and it let me talk with my mother and sister. Washing dishes taught me to be careful and watch what I am doing. And cooking taught me that everyone is able to create something it may be easy but you still created a product....

...The person who influenced my life the most is my mother. Margaret Ann (Tinnin) Williams was born 16 March 1943 in French Camp Californian. My mother gave me my core values and beliefs. Her parents are Roy Donald Tinnin and Clara Velma (McMurray) Tinnin. Her father served in the United States Navy during World War II. Her mother worked in the Post Office Lathrop California. The values she learned from childhood are the same values she taught her children. Do not lie. Do not cheat. Do not steal. Think before you speak. Show respect for yourself and others. These are some of the values she taught me and my siblings. The values she taught us are the same values the Army has. One of the things she always told us is to ‘think before you speak’. My mom would give us an example. She told us about a sermon the preacher gave at church. He is at the pulpit with a can of shaving cream. He takes the shaving cream and says, “You see this can of shaving cream. It is like words.” He takes the shaving cream and pushes down. The shaving cream goes into his other hand. “He says shaving cream is like words. Once you pour, the shaving cream out you cannot get it back into the can. Once you speak words, you cannot take them back. Thou you say you are sorry for what you have said. The words are still in the memory of those who heard them.” She would also tell us “If you do not have anything good to say, and then say nothing at all.” Teaching us about the power words...

...Fans cheering, players nervous, the intensity is high. Runners on all the bases, score is 4-4 winning run is on third with just one batter left. Just in a second, the longest game ever became the shortest. The run had scored, and we lost. Ever since I was little, my love for the game of softball has flourished. Not only has softball taught me plays, it developed me as a person. The hard work that the game requires teaches a lesson to never give up, even when you make a mistake. Softball has connected me to my work in the classroom and outside of school to always fight through tough times. In college if something isn't going right I will work hard and set my mind to the difficult task and get it done. My freshman year on the softball team...

...means more to me than that. It means the experience me and my parents had through the process and how it affected me. It means my parents leaving everything behind in their beloved homeland to seek a better future for their children, more than halfway through their life. For me personally, it meant having to leave my friends, my school, the community I was a part of, and moving to a new place that was very different in every aspect of life. But being an immigrant means more to me than just the hardship of adjusting to a new country, it has taught me lessons in life that will stick with me for the entirety of...

...the bad times in life mold you as you grow and mature. There have been many events in my life that have shaped me into being me. Some have shaped my thinking or personality, while others have reared me into being a leader. But out of every event, there are three life occurrences that have had the greatest impacts on my life. These three events have had a profound influence on me and are my guiding forces in my current actions. These events include switching churches, going to Howard University for a year, and working at my current job. When I was in seventh grade, my mother informed me that we would be attending a new church. I was automatically distraught and very upset with her decision. The main reason was because I loved my old church. I loved that it was mainly family and friends...

Thank you for putting on the glasses that PFO offered you so long ago. Thank you for your fountain of ideas. Your ideas are boundless, granted not always achievable; they are certainly packed with enthusiasm. Your bowels are backed-up with so many brilliant ideas that you eventually always shit them out. ...Composition Rough Draft 1 There are many people who have impacted my life and have inspired me to lead the life I live today. Among these people is my step-father, who came into my life at about the age of nine. Essentially, he has taught me how to be a man, and how to handle situations in such a way that a real, mature man would. He is one of the most dedicated and hardworking people I have ever known, and has shown me by example how I should act, work, and respect others. If it were not for him, I may or may not have some of the great qualities that he has imposed on me, merely by leading by example. My step-father stepped in at a crucial time for my family, and I learned to love him, especially for all the support he has always provided for us. He is the perfect example of the "Right Person, Right Place, Right Time," and my life would be much different if it were not for him. The moment he stepped into my life is the moment I would describe as a Kairos. This Kairos has shaped and molded my life into what it is now, and I can thank him for playing such a vital role. One factor of this Kairos is the ethos aspect. Through a showing of incomparable work and dedication, my step-father has exhibited rationale for me to follow his footsteps. A great level of respect and trust was placed into his hands when he came into my life, and he guided me by showing me how I should act and work, not by simply telling me what to do. I was asked to join him for a day of labor one weekend and I...

...Who are you? You are the canvas, a wooden shoe that has been carved out your entire life. But really, who are you? Well, you’re you. There are many people that may share similarities to who you are, but no one can be exactly who you are. But why is that? It’s because you’re unique. Every moment, experience, mistake, and rollercoaster you’ve been on is what makes you who you are. Why? It’s because you made it this way. Your entire life is dictated on how you want to live it, how you’re influenced, and why you feel the way you do. You are self-taught how to be your own personal teacher. Some may think it’s selfish to say I am my own best teacher, but really is it? I don’t think so, and I’ll tell you why. My entire life, I have mostly had to fend for myself. I grew up poor, sometimes homeless, and even moreso clueless in what I needed to do. I was a kid growing up in a grown up world. I had responsibilities at the age of 10 that some people don’t even have at the age of 30. I had people who were depending on me to be so much more than just a child. At the age of 13, I had a job. I worked to help provide rent and food. I didn’t want to work, but I needed to. Life taught me at a very young age that there are things we want to do, and there are things we need to do. It’s never a good idea to mix the two ideals. On a professional level, I found out at a young age what it mean’t to be a hard-worker. I taught myself how to work, deal with others, and even tolerate doing things I didn’t...

...the Most Influential Person in my Life? I would say the person who has had a significant influence on my life would be my dad. My dad has taught me about life and people at a very young age. As I grew older he taught me about values; what kind of person do I want to be? How do I want to be perceived by my peers? He taught me to be loyal, honest, loving, and most of all have integrity. Your moral soundness is the foundation for which you build and live your life. It is that foundation on which your character is built. Having good character has always been my dad’s way of thinking. He always said “It starts from there and ends there. Weak character, weak foundation.” My dad has taught me to think for myself, stand on my own two feet, never be a follower, and always be a leader. He said it not about knowing right from wrong; we all know the difference. It’s about having the strength to follow the right path. The right thing to do is usually the hardest. Taking the easy way out is always easier. My dad has always taught me to be loyal. Your word is your bond and sometimes that’s all someone can give. It’s worth more than money. I’ll never forget the saying he used, “Never judge a man by the size of his wallet, judge on how he treats his family and others, judge him on his character.” My dad owns his own business and sometimes I would go to work with him. I think that’s when I realized what kind of man my father was and what kind of man I wanted to be. All...

...High School Relfection Over the past four years my high school experience has shaped the person I am today. It has affected me vastly in all areas of my life. It has driven me to be more ambitious, more community minded and more conscientious. ACLC has also helped me be a part of several communities not just one, it has allowed me to make connections at Encinal High School, College of Alameda and within the ACLC community. My high school experience has ultimately taught me the basic knowledge that I will need in life in all the general education fields, how to solve problems which do not have obvious answers, and how to work effectively either with others or alone. The education I have received over the past few years at ACLC has been predictably unconventional. In all subjects from math and science to language arts and history we have approached the material in creative and unusual ways, though all these methods have been quite effective. I have been able to work on five languages and have become competent reading, writing, speaking and listening in three through the various language programs offered by our school. Additionally I have completed college calculus and have created science projects which have placed at the regional science fair. I have also learned to appreciate the importance of communication through effective speech and debate in various clubs and through media in classes like DVS. In history I was presented with much more material than students at other schools...

I related to Jeanette when she said “I told him I would never lose faith in him and I promised myself that I never would” (pg 79). I can relate because my dad is my favorite person he probably is not the best person but he is my favorite person. My dad can do so much and does do so much but no matter what I will not lose faith in him. He might irritate me, make me mad, and make me cry but knowing no one else's is there for him I will always be.
