ESSAY: What Makes You Tired-and What You Can Do About It
Here is an astounding and significant fact: Mental work alone can't make you tired. Sounds absurd.
But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labour without reaching "a diminished capacity for work", the scientific definition of fatigue. To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If you took blood from the veins of a day labourer while he was working, you would find it full of "fatigue toxins" and fatigue products. But if you took a drop of blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein, it would show no fatigue toxins whatever at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned, it can work "as well and as swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning". The brain is utterly tireless. ... So what makes you tired?
Psychiatrists declare that most of our fatigue derives from our mental and emotional attitudes. One of
England's most distinguished psychiatrists, J.A. Hadfield, says in his book The Psychology of Power:
"the greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin; in fact exhaustion of purely physical origin is rare."
One of America's most distinguished psychiatrists, Dr. A.A. Brill, goes even further. He declares:
"One hundred per cent of the fatigue of the sedentary worker in good health is due to psychological factors, by which we mean emotional factors."
What kinds of emotional factors tire the sedentary (or sitting) worker? Joy? Contentment? No! Never!
Boredom, resentment, a feeling of not being appreciated, a feeling of futility, hurry, anxiety, worrythose are the emotional factors that exhaust the sitting worker, make him susceptible to colds, reduce his output, and send him home with a nervous

My Favourite Thing

...like to write about. That is music. Music can be used to express yourself. In religion are they also using songs to pray. I am not the greatest singer actually I can not sing. I love to listen to music. I love to listen to almost every genre of music but I do not like to listen to classic music because that makes me fall asleep. The reason I love to listen to music is because music can describe what you feel. Just for example if you just broke up with your boyfriend or girlfriend then there are many songs that can describe what you feel and sometimes it just touches your heart. Music can also be a lifesaver in an awkward situation. It can example be if you are driving a car and there is a awkward silence between you and your partner then music can save the awkward silence. Songs can describe what you feel. When you are sad and tired then you can listen to music so it can brighten up your day. You can deliver a message with a song. A song can be as beautiful as a poem. It can tell you a life story just in 3-4 minutes. For every song there is a certain place where you were when you listened to the song and it can bring memories back. Not all of the songs are great today. Some of the songs are so catchy but the lyrics do not make any sense just like ‘’Gangnam Style’’. Not many people know what he sings but they still sing along. Music is universal and that is also one of the reasons why I love music. Some of the reasons why I love music so much are because it can make you happy, sad...

Sleep

...beneficial part of our lives. Sleep helps us to have a better quality of life, but nowadays not sleeping well has become part of the lives of many people. The sleep needed is between 7 to 9 hours, but some people get 6 hours or less. Sleep deficiency can be presented at any time of our lives, as adult people, teenagers and even in children. Sleeping well helps us physically and mentally. It is known that sleep plays an important role and helps us to improve our memory, health, learning and metabolism. Also sleep has an big impact on our life and it can bring a lot of consequences such as, long term diseases, car accidents, memory problems, shorter life, lower grades, deficiency at work, mad mood, poor performance exercise and extra activities. One of the consequences that lack of sleep brings is long term diseases. If we do not sleep what we need, we can increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and hypertension, metabolic problems such as, obesity and diabetes and emotional disorders such as, depression and bipolar disorder. When we deprive our bodies of sleep, it raises ghrelin which it is a hormone that regulates the need to eat. When we do not sleep, that hormone increases causing us want to eat more when we do not need it, so that is when obesity problems are presented. Also, sleeping decreases leptin which is another hormone that regulates the need to eat and when it decreases, we will have the need of eating more although we are already full. “A 2010 study...

Gender Differences

...very differently—in fact, it is sometimes stated that women and men communicate so differently from one another that they must come from different planets! Although at times differences in women’s and men’s communication styles seem to be constant and overwhelming, they are really quite minor. For example, both women and men can be nurturing, aggressive, task-focused, or sentimental. What is important to think about, however, is that women and men sometimes perceive the same messages to have different meanings. In fact, it may be as a result of the differences in message interpretation that the “battle of the sexes” occurs. Studies indicate that women, to a greater extent than men, are sensitive to the interpersonal meanings that lie “between the lines” in the messages they exchange with their mates. That is, societal expectations often make women responsible for regulating intimacy, or how close they allow others to come. For that reason, it is argued that women pay more attention than men to the underlying meanings about intimacy that messages imply. Men on the other hand, to a greater extent than women, are more sensitive to “between the lines meanings” about status. For men, societal expectations are that they must negotiate hierarchy, or who’s the captain and who’s the crew (Tannen, 1990; Wood, 2009). These differences in emphasis on interpersonal vs. status implications of messages typically lead women to expect relationships to be based on interdependence (mutual dependence)...

Health for Youths

...that computer game that you're winning."Why do I have to go to bed?" you ask. "Sleep is boring, and I'm not even tired!"But sleep is more important than you may think. Maybe you can think of a time when you didn't get enough sleep. That heavy, groggy feeling is awful and, when you feel that way, you're not at your best. So if you're not too tired, let's talk about sleep. Why You Need Sleep The average kid has a busy day. There's school, taking care of your pets, running around with friends, going to sports practice or other activities, and doing your homework. Phew! It's tiring just writing it all down. By the end of the day, your body needs a break. Sleep allows your body to rest for the next day. Everything that's alive needs sleep to survive. Even your dog or cat curls up for naps. Animals sleep for the same reason you do — to give your body a tiny vacation. Your Brain Needs Zzzzzs Not only is sleep necessary for your body, it's important for your brain, too. Though no one is exactly sure what work the brain does when you're asleep, some scientists think that the brain sorts through and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems while you snooze. Most kids between 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours a night, but experts agree that most...

Quotes

...Sometimes, you have to give up on people, not because you don’t care, because they don’t. I don’t know how to be someone that you would miss. Sometimes you got to fall before you fly. They laugh at me because I’m different. I laugh at them because they’re all the same. You can’t judge my choices without knowing my reasons. If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. We don’t see things as they are. We see things as we are. Before you judge me, make sure you’re prefect. If you can’t hold me when I am crying, then you don’t deserve to hold me when I am happy. Sometimes crying is the only way to feel better. There are better things ahead than any we leave behind. Forever is a long time. But I wouldn’t mind spending it by your side. Whatever you do, good or bad, people will always have something negative to say. Everyone goes through emotional problems, some people are just better at hiding it than others. If you have crazy friend, you have everything. You showed me what love feels like. I keep myself busy with things to do, but every time I pause, I still think of you. My attitude is based on how you treat me. People say that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone. Truth is, you knew what you had, but you just thought you’d never lose it. The hardest thing to see is what is in front of your eyes. Friendship means understanding, not agreement. It means forgiveness, not forgetting. I never really stopped liking you; I only gave up because you did. Don’t...

Benefits of Sleeping

...sorry I hated you when I was a kid, but now I can’t get enough of you. Please come back. Sincerely, me. This is just so me and every 4th year students and maybe even you. I have this story of mine that I would like to share. When I was in 2nd year high school, Ale and I were making a project in English – the Pop Up book. Ow, curse that project. We did the project before the day of the deadline. To really finish the book, I stayed at Ale’s house. We didn’t sleep because of that project. That night, we’ve just listened to Papa Jack’s love advices. When the morning comes, we looked haggard. We went to school together. We all looked so wasted up. That day is the day that I’ve been waiting for. Why? Because Divine, Paye, Kate along with the Konta Gapi teachers are going to perform that night. They’re going to perform the Ati Mr .and Ms. El Nido. I’ve always watched them from the start of their practice till the end that’s why I’m so excited. Dismissal. I’ve watched them practice for the last time. When I got home, I’ve told myself that I’m just going to take a nap for 20 minutes. But when I wake up, it’s already past 11 pm. I don’t even know how I end up on my bed. I looked at my phone and I wonder why I have so many text and calls from my friends. And I realized that I’ve missed the night that I’ve been waiting for. That night I cursed T. Jode’s project even the subject. But not the teacher, believe me. This story has something to do with sleep. We all know what sleep is. Am I...
