In the book, Garp not only takes on being the father of this children, but in ways also the mother of them. He did not just show masculine characteristics but also feminine ones too. Although he acquired both, him and his wife Helen both had equally important roles in their marriage, even though Helen might not have been the stereotypical mother for this time period. Despite the fact that in some ways Garp fit the stereotypical role, such as yelling at speeding drivers and protecting his family, he overall did not fit the commonly known image of stereotypical father.
