...Bravery Follows Through This Long Journey The conductors who contributed to the Underground Railroad sacrificed a great deal to help other slaves escape to freedom; that showed ample amounts of bravery. Martin Luther King Jr. stood by what he believed in to make a difference for this generation. He was remembered as a great man of bravery, he wanted change for blacks and whites to be equal. However, bravery does not come naturally to some people. To be brave means possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance. Bravery is the ability to allow a person to be appearing bigger than the crisis. In James McBride’s novel, Song Yet Sung, he describes three characters that exemplify in bravery who were Liz, Amber, and Wiley. To begin with, Liz proved her bravery on numerous accounts throughout this novel. Liz was an ambitious young woman who was determined to find her freedom. She refuses to go back to the life of being raped by her slave owner Captain Spocott. She has overcome obstacles from being shot in the head, exhaustion, and hunger. Liz has shown initiative by helping people along her journey. Specifically, Liz courageous moment was to get her and 14 other slaves to escape from Patty Cannon’s attic. She envisioned how she would kill Little George in order to escape (16). For instance, Liz’s bravery was shown when she removed a young boy’s foot out a muskrat trap. ...Intro Jefferson, a well-established and popular drug dealer in town who controls 60% of the drug market in New York City. Jeff was born in Queens a middle-class neighbourhood in the city of New York. His mother worked at a small yet heavily frequented diner, his dad worked at the Ferry discharging cargos from sunrise until dawn and could hardly pay the bills. Jeff was a typical student, average grades, played sports for the school and a handful of friends to hang out with. However, it all changed when he encountered a situation with a kid named Bobby. Bobby, was a chubby and short kid, known for hiding behind a greasy fringe reminiscent of a wet mop. He was a fairly mediocre student who cared more about having fun than making his parents proud...

...Scipio the Learner Scipio was a courageous young Roman General who defeated Hannibal at Zama in the last battle of the Second Punic War. He earned recognition as a great leader and commander for his bravery and his tactical strategies. In the chapter “Scipio Africanus” in the book, “The Centurion Principles” by retired Colonel Jeff O”Leary, the military life and leadership qualities of Scipio are examined. Additionally, O’Leary shows how Scipio’s skills can be applied the business world. As a student at Houston Christian, these leadership principles can also be applied to my life today. Scipio’s life was severely affected by war and it helped him to become the leader he was. He survived a horrible massacre at Cannae by the Carthaginian commander, Hannibal. When he was only 17 years old, he saved the life of his father in an act of extreme bravery and selflessness. Later, his father and uncle would each die in battles against the Carthaginians, in part due to limited Roman forces sent by an uncommitted Roman senate. Instead of being bitter and turning away from responsibility from fear, Scipio learned everything he could about Hannibal’s war tactics. Eventually, in an act of obligation for his fallen patriarchs and from a desire to test his strength and skill, Scipio volunteered as Commander of Legions in Spain when no one else would. Following his appointment, he spent time to get to know his allies and to commend those he was leading in order to build their confidence...

...The need for a definitive symbol of Canadian identity is the answer. Jeff Keshen argues that “the rapid growth of autonomy in Australia and Canada following the Great War helped to ensure that popular discourse continued to depict superior, courageous and noble soldiers.” As nationalist politicians in both dominions sought greater autonomy, the image of a strong national army representing the nascent nation was no doubt invaluable. For example, Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King drew heavily on the battle’s symbolism in his rhetoric. The unity that the myth built was necessary in moving towards an autonomous Canadian nation, and “the power of the mythicized version of the war experience, then, was considerable.” Rather than delve into the more technical examples Canadian successes during the First World War, it is far easier for a politician to capture the romantic, nationalist spirit of an audience with a...

...computer along with other short patriotic emotion evoking videos that I have stumbled across over the years. Regardless of the political views and the affiliations that Jeff Daniels or the other members and producers of The Newsroom have this video brings up very enlightening points regarding the path that the United States has taken since its creation in 1776. I am part of the same generation that the college girl speaking in the video is associated with, and I agree to some extent with the remarks made in the video “None of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt, a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period.” This is a strong statement to agree with but I do. Over the recent thanksgiving break I we fortunate to hear stories from my father about growing up as well as from several elder members in the community. It made me consider what the past generations have contributed to this country and each generations “mindset”. You had the Greatest Generation which represents those who lived through, fought in, and supported the greatest war in the history of the world. These individuals sacrificed food, aluminum, rubber, and other things so that they could be used in the war effort. You had the Baby Boomers who lived through the civil rights movements, who witnessed and helped African Americans gain equality. This generation also did the impossible and put a man on the moon. As Kennedy put it. “…We choose to go to the...

...Nyesha Clark Professor Cooper Texas Government December 1, 2014 The Determination of Wendy Davis Some people say education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world, and I agree. Wendy Davis is a well-educated woman who has broken barriers in her carrier and fought for the education systems in Texas because she knows the importance of it. It was not an easy road to success for Davis; she has been through many trails on her journey. Born the daughter of Jerry and Virginia Russell Wendy was born May 16, 1963 in West Warwick Rhode Island. Her Family moved to Fort Worth, Texas in 1973. At 14 years old Wendy worked two jobs to help her mother support her three siblings. She worked for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and at an Orange Juice stand. By 17 years old she was an independent woman taking care of herself and at 18 she became a mother to her daughter Amber and a wife to her Husband Frank Underwood. But the marriage didn’t last past the honey moon stage because by the age of 21 Davis and he were divorced. But luckily true love was only around the corner because Wendy was soon remarried to her Husband today Jeff Davis. Wendy knew that she had to change her life around. She had to do something better then working two jobs to barely make ends meet, so when she saw her opportunity for education at Tarrant County College she took it. Wendy Davis started out at Tarrant County College where she stayed for two years and then transferred to Texas Christian University...

...says "Yes!" and offers several proven strategies. Guns Magazine , Jan 1, 2002, by Massad Ayoob If you keep a gun in your home or workplace, it's only common sense that it be loaded and quickly accessible. The same common sense, however, also tells us the firearm should be inaccessible to children, incompetent adults and unlawful intruders. Having both at once is a tall order, but that doesn't make it impossible. Let's look at a broad spectrum of armed citizens and police officers in this country who have found that when it comes to this important matter -- you can have your cake and eat it too. In The Home John is a detective and gunfight winner who works for a large, West Coast jaw-enforcement agency that serves a very high-crime community. He has investigated a number of violent home invasions, many of which had tragically fatal results. Though most of these were "drug dealer invading and ripping off rival dealer" situations, a disturbing number involved innocent, law-abiding citizens who were helpless once their doors were kicked in. When John gets dressed for work in the morning, he clips the department-issue Safariland holster containing a Glock 17 loaded with Winchester 9mm hollowpoints onto his belt. When he comes home at night, the gun and holster stay in place. "In virtually all the home invasions I've investigated, there wouldn't have been time for the victims to run into the next room and grab a loaded gun once the bad guys started kicking the door down,...

...of in-demand models with serious dance backgrounds literally have a leg up. At the same time, as the pages of this fall’s set of weighty magazines attest, professional dancers are influencing fashion in ways never seen before. The pathway to becoming a dancer may vary, but most people start by taking classes at a local dance school. If the goal is to become a professional dancer, this is followed by auditioning for an organization that specializes in full-time dance training, completing an accredited course, and then taking part in an array of auditions for various companies or project work. The transition from being a person who dances for fun to a person who wishes to pursue dance as a career offers a mixture of challenges, rewards and in some cases disappointment. The competitive reality of gaining dance employment requires confident individuals who are physically,...

...It brings to light the very different social stigmas there were about mental illness in the 1930s. “The fact that being depressed could be a medical issue didn’t occur to a lot of people. And so my father never got help, and just tried to cope” (60-61). Much later, after a very painful gallbladder surgery, his father committed suicide (289-290). After hearing about this experience, I am very grateful that I live an era where people fully understand the impact mental illness can have on a person and that there is counselling and medical help available for those who need it. Sullenberger was also profoundly affected by his father’s death, and it changed his world view. He said that he learned from his father’s suicide to value life highly...

...companies with a mechanism to raise money for various needs without having to report the debt in their balance sheets, Enron’s CFO directly ran these partnerships and designed them to purchase the underperforming assets (such as Enron's poorly performing stocks and stakes). Although being recorded as related third parties, these partnerships were never consolidated so that debt could be getting off its balance sheet and the company itself could boost and have not had to show the real numbers to stockholders. Andrew Fastow was using SPEs to conceal some $1 billion in Enron debt. Overall, according to Enron, Fastow made about $30 million from LJM by using these partnerships to get kickbacks which were disguised as gifts from family members who invested in them and enriching himself. His manipulation of the off-balance-sheet partnerships to take on debts, hide losses and kick off inflated revenues while banning employees' stock sales was one of the reasons triggered the collapse of the company and its bankruptcy. Did Enron’s bankers, auditors and attorneys contribute to Enron’s demise? If so, what was their contribution? One part of the fallout from Enron's demise involves its relations with banker, auditor and attorneys. Although the banks knew there was a problem with Enron finance, their underwriting filings on debt issues sold to the public proved that wwithout its bankers,...
