Two thousand, three hundred and twenty-nine. That’s how many hours on average a college athlete practices per year. A full 44.8 hours a week, more than how much time you spend at your job or at school. To help you get an idea, you work on average for about 40 hours a week and you go to school for about 35 hours a week (5 days in school week). If you take about 2,329 hours every year to play a sport or to do anything then you would want to get paid for it so you know that it could help you in the future right? Perfecting the sport might help you get to the state teams but while spending all of this time practicing and going to school, I doubt you have time for a job, getting paid for being on your college team might just help you out. However, …show more content…
Some people may think in college, athletes get paid in education. But not every athlete goes to college on a full scholarship, many have student loans to pay and lots of work to do. Getting paid in the education may very well help them later in life but right now the education won't help pay for anything that needs to be paid for. Learning the information they learn in class may help them succeed in life but all of the time and commitment that went into playing the game should allow them to make some of the revenue that the college is making from having these athletes play and win games. People might argue that college students are provided education that can help them thrive in the “real world” and that should be enough. As Kieran McCauley says in his “College Athletes Shouldn’t Be Paid” article,“For better or worse even if an athlete does not pan out in the professionals, they at least made a name for themselves. It will help them find a job when they graduate..” The education may help them succeed in life but all of the time and …show more content…
Knowing that they are going to be paid might encourage them to give as much time as they can to the game because they don't have to worry about working for money. Having the money to fall back on the athletes can focus all of their time on their sports and academics. In his book Amature Athletics Marzilli explains, “Over the years, the NCAA has grown increasingly serious about academics”(41). Schools everywhere are increasing the academic requirements to stay on a team because they want to make sure the athletes are also focusing on their schoolwork. That increase also means that athletes could spend all of their time on school work or sports keeping them focused. The money they would be getting would encourage them to give all of their time on sports and school, it would encourage them to keep focused because although we might not like to admit it, having a reward does increases your wanting to do a difficult task. Getting paid will help the athletes know that all of their time and dedication put into the particular sport is worth something. Not every college athlete makes it to professionals, so having money now could help them later. They could save up the money so when they get out of college the have enough to help them get their life started. With all the time they spend playing and practicing their sport college

...College Athletes: Compensation Deserved but not Given Everyone loves to watch their favorite college basketball or football players play in a game, yet college athletes do not get paid for the entertainment they provide. There are many benefits to paying college athletes, and there are many reasons why they should be paid. College athletes should be paid because they put their lives at risk for entertainment, they need money for personal needs, and they should be able to get some of the spoils of their work, instead of coaches and administrators making all the money. Why College Athletes Should Not Be Paid

...Why College Athletes Should not be Paid Kim Howard Sullivan University ENG204X: Advanced Writing November 1, 2015 Each year as March Madness begins the big debate begins of whether or not college athletes should be paid. Why is this? Some of the top universities begin to see a mass exodus of their best athletes who are mostly undergraduate students. While most believe these athletes exit school early and join the professional leagues due to the large amount wealth they could earn. In my opinion I do not feel these student-athletes should be paid above and beyond what any other student should receive. However, I can appreciate and empathize with the viewpoints of both sides. College athletics, more specifically men’s basketball and football, provides an enormous amount of revenue for schools. However, this is not a true statement for many schools. The more prominent universities, such as Duke, University of Kentucky, and Florida State University, will receive the income and the smaller colleges struggle to just maintain their programs. This is one reason for the conflict. College athletes believe they should reap the benefits of their efforts (Gregory & Fulton, 2005). First of all, attending college and playing sports is a choice not a requirement. The choice of playing athletics is part of the experience of attending a college or a university. As such, they become student-athletes with the emphasis on student. Student-athletes are in fact paid to...

Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

...College athletes are discriminated against. The top athletes in popular sports are not fairly compensated for the fame and revenue that they bring their respective college. Athletes deserve to share in the wealth created due to their efforts on the courts and fields of their universities. Athletes should benefit from their fame and likeness just as everyone else at their colleges and universities. They should be able to take endorsements like their coaches and students in other aspects of college besides athletics. If a local clothing store wants an athlete to come in and sign autographs for a few hours during a store sale, why shouldn’t they be allowed to take that opportunity? Music students are allowed to accept money for going and playing a gig at a local bar. What makes athletes different? Nobody in America has to deal with the restrictions on income that the NCAA imposes. Actors and musicians can go off to college, while they are on a scholarship, and still make money off their talent. It is morally wrong to prevent student athletes from doing the same thing. Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

...Why is it that people who have a job get paid, but determined college athletes don't? College athletes wake up every single day and work day and night to practice the sport they specialize in. These athletes dedicate most of their work for their sport, however don't get rewarded for it. Similar to when you work for your ignorant manager, yet he/she keeps the money for themselves and don't pay you. This exemplifies how college athletes must feel when they lay foot on to the court, the field, and the ice. This isn't fair and college athletes must be paid because they work with determination just like professional athletes, maybe even to a greater extent, since they also have to balance their school schedule. Knowing all this, college athletes deserve to be paid for all the effort and hard work they put into their sport....

...getting paid. This is the life of a college athlete. If going to school isn't already stressful enough, imagine adding practice multiple times a day, working a job (if possible), doing homework, and finding time to relax all into that one 24-hour period. College athletes should get paid because their restricting schedules denies them the opportunity to work. The National Collegiate Athletic Association(NCAA) is a multi-million dollar non-profit association in charge of thousands of athletes. The 460,000 plus athletes compete in 24 sports year-round which are divided into divisions appropriate for the school of their attendance. Of those 460,000 plus athletes, none of them receive any type of payment for their services legally. They can receive things of monetary value illegally, but this would unnecessarily if they got paid for their services. People or even you may wonder why this topic is important. The importance of this topic is that it's been a rising issue for years but there has never been an answer to this issue. Hopefully, I can help with the issue but for now let's discuss why they should get paid.
