September 1, 1939 marked the beginning of World War II with the invasion of Poland by Germany and declarations of war on German by France, as well as several countries in the British Empire. Even before the beginning of WWII several countries were already at war, where as other countries practiced a policy of isolationsism, perferring to stay out of the war. However, many of the countries who were not initially involved in the war joined later as a result of several events. Among which included the attack on Pearl Harbor and British colonies by the Japanese and German invasion of the Soviet Union. Canada and Brazil were among the countries that joined the war later. Both countries would play critical roles duing WWII, both diplomaticly and militarily. Reluctant to enter the war, Canada would not officially take part in WWII until September 10, 1939 when they declared war on Germany. Canada was active throughout the war, completing numerous voyages across the Atlantic, as well as being active in the Pacific. Canada contributed to the Allies by contributing conveys, which provided protection for troops and supplies being shipped from Canada to Britain. Reluctant to enter a full scale battle, Canada decided to establish the BCATP. One of the major contributions to the Allied forces by Canada was the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, the largest air force training program in history. Signed into argreement on December 17, 1939, by Canada, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand, Canada would agreed to bear the burden of the cost. During the Second World War, aircrafts were often used. Canada suffered huge casualties, as over 16,000 Canadians lost their lives. Thousands upon thousands of air force personnel were trained at airbases in Canada from October 1940 to March 1945. The BCATP established 151 schools throughout Canada and trained 131, 355
