Why Do Companies Use Propaganda Techniques In Advertising

Today, you see advertisements everywhere. They make you laugh, feel good, and give you information about a product. They are a big part of modern life; however, there is a negative side. Many businesses use propaganda techniques to convince people of all ages to buy their product. Some of the manipulative techniques they use are known as glittering generalities, testimonial, and plain folks. One way advertising companies manipulate us is by using the glittering generalities technique. This technique is used in many food commercials. By adding in positive and comforting words such as "now low-fat" and "no artificial preservatives and colors," they try to make us feel that if we buy their product we will be more positive and healthy. But, what we don't know is that these companies are just trying to cover up other negatives about their product. Take Coke Zero for example. The Coca-Cola Corporation is just trying to cover up the fact that this product has a lot of artificial sweeteners that are even worse than sugar with the fact that it has 0 grams of fat, calories, and sugar. SeaWorld also uses this technique. They mention caring for animals in their ads, but actually, they keep big orcas in small tanks, not allowing the orcas to swim enough with their families. By putting random people on ads and having them say that they've experienced the product in a good way, we feel that we should try the product out. This is very common in television commercials as it shows the company is one with the people. Proactiv commercials use this technique as it makes you feel that if other people say it's an excellent product then it will be good for you too.
