A statement from a bullying expert for making bullying a criminal offence “Youth who experienced traditional bullying or cyber bullying, as either an offender or a victim, scored higher on our suicidal ideation scale than those who had not experienced those two forms of peer aggression” Nonetheless “hue and cry to criminalize cyber bullying is “misguided”. The vast majority of cyber bullying incidents can and should be handled informally: with parents, schools and others working together to address the problem before it rises to the level of criminal law. Suicide Paper

...Suicide Research Paper Cassandra Tankersley Suicide. It is something that more than 36,000 Americans successfully manage to do every year. It is something that is considered to be a “socially unacceptable” topic of discussion. It is something that affects hundreds of thousands of people each and every day, often in ways most cannot imagine. And I believe that it is something that needs to stop being hidden in the darkest of closets. Without this subject being discussed and researched with more depth than what is already taking place, it will remain a subject without a whole lot of general understanding behind the whys and the causes of people choosing to end their lives. I will admit that this topic is something extremely personal for me, so my views may be colored as to what should be done about the knowledge of suicide, however, I cannot help but feel that this topic is long overdue for its spotlight in the medical world. Make no mistake – this is not about the accidental suicides; it is very much about those who willingly and intentionally plan to and successfully commit suicide. There are various facts a quick Google search can dig up in regards to suicide – such as men are four times as likely to commit suicide than women are, and it's easily discernible that the focus on suicide prevention is on teenagers with recent focus being added to those considered “middle age”. It's also very easy to locate information on “how to help prevent suicide”. But the fact of the matter...

Speech About Suicide

...Neil Chua Suicide In life, there are many challenges that will face you and it will not always be easy and you must find a way to overcome that problem. But some people want an easy way to escape the problem and one of these ways is to kill themselves or what we call suicide. Statistically, for every forty seconds, one person will die of committing suicide, over 1 million people kill themselves every year worldwide and for every one hundred thousand population, 16 people will commit suicide. There are many factors that affect the decision of people to end their lives and I will talk about the most common reasons on why people are committing suicide. People commit suicide because of too much depression, stressful life events, and psychological disorders. My first point is depression. I think that this is one of the most common reasons for suicide and statistics shows that 15% of clinically depressed people die by killing themselves. Now why do people kill themselves because of depression? This is simply because they want to get rid of the feeling and they are hopeless that the feeling will never go away and that suicide is the only way to escape the burden that they have. When people are depressed, they think too much so that’s why suicide comes in to their thoughts because they think that “Everything will be better without me” as said by Alex Lickerman. Now we can’t always blame the depressed person on why he or she committed suicide because like many diseases, depression...

...Suicide; Behaviors and Treatment What is suicide? According to Dictionary.com, Suicide is “the intentional taking of one’s own life” (Dictionary.com, 2009). Suicide takes the lives of almost 30,000 Americans a year and is the 11th leading cause of death in American, homicide being the 15th (Save.org, 2009). Suicide can be caused by many different abnormal behaviors and can effect not only the victim but also family and friends of the victim. Suicidal thoughts and feelings should be taken seriously because they’re true feelings one is having. I hope to educate the reader on abnormal disorders that can cause suicide, the symptoms and behaviors of a suicidal person, and educate the reader on ways to prevent a person from taking their own life. According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, suicide takes the lives of almost 30,000 Americans a year. For younger people, ages 15-24, suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death. For older adults suicide is more likely to happen if the adult has lost a spouse. Males are four times more likely to commit suicide then females. Many people who attempt suicide never seek professional help but 80% of people who do seek professional help are treated successfully. Substance abuse is a strong risk factor for suicide but depression is the strongest risk, 15% of people who are clinically depressed die from suicide (Save.org, 2009). Schizophrenia

...deficit in emotional responses. About one percent of the population will get the disorder. Men are more likely than women to get it and younger people usually do not get it. Many people do not understand how this mental disorder affects these people with schizophrenia. Some symptoms of schizophrenia include: hallucinations and diminished ability to speak. One aspect of this disorder is hearing voices, which sometimes tells them to do harmful things. They also have a hard time determining reality from one of their hallucinations. Some people believe that if your parent has the disorder you will be more likely to get it later in your life. Drugs can have a major impact and give you schizophrenia, also infection during birth can cause a child to have schizophrenia. Sometimes they may act with violent behavior so the community just pushes them aside as crazies that need to be locked up. Schizophrenics have a very high suicide rate, partially due to their lack of ability to fit in the normal world. They are ostracized by their very communities and made to feel belittled. The fact of the matter is that suicide is a big problem that strongly affects schizophrenics. According to Verma, “approximately 2 to 12% of all suicides are in direct correlation with symptoms of schizophrenia” (p.127). The patients who are most likely to commit suicide are more lonely ones. In many studies it has been determined that the schizophrenics who have families are less likely to kill themselves or attempt...

Paradox of Suicide

...Instructor: Tai Woo Recently, the matter of suicide has come up in several conversations and throughout a media. Yet, the question as to why people commit suicide remains controversial and boundless. There are twice as many suicides in the U.S each year than homicide. After listening to the intrigue podcast “The Paradox of Suicide”, I have developed some thoughts and some new understanding about suicide. So the first thing I ask myself when I think of suicide is why do people do it? This seems to be the question on everyone’s mind. It is extremely hard for me to understand how something can drive a person to a state of mind where they outweigh the value of living. What has pushed them to the limit where the only solution to relieve themselves of the pain is to kill themselves? In the podcast, they interview college professor Dante Everest who has travelled to a tribe in the Amazon jungle to learn more about how people there take on suicide. After Dante tells about his mother’s suicide and explain how it made a huge impact on him to the people of the tribe, they burst to laugh and feel as if the concept of a person voluntarily killing themselves is lubricous and unheard of. It is hard not to compare the tribe in the amazon that has a zero suicide rate, to the U.S which has a 35,500 suicide rate each year. So the next thing comes to my mind is why? Why does the community in the small Amazonian tribe have a zero tolerance for suicide? The people of the tribe have explained that it could...

Consider Emile Durkheim’s Approach to the Study of Suicide. Why Does He Associate Egoistic Suicide with Modern Society and Altruistic Suicide with Pre-Modern Suicide?

...Consider Emile Durkheim’s approach to the study of suicide. Why does he associate egoistic suicide with modern society and altruistic suicide with pre-modern suicide? Emile Durkheim goes to great lengths in this article to describe the many different types of suicide and how they affect society. He believes that social influences have a large part to play with suicide rates in different countries. He looks to take the matter away from the individual and focus on how and why suicide rates among different classes, genders, and age groups are similar throughout different countries. Durkheim goes on to discuss the different reasons why people may commit suicide. These include people been over- integrated into society or altruistic suicide, under integrated into society or egotistic suicide, having too much moral regulation or fatalistic suicide and having too little moral regulation or anomic suicide. This assignment will discuss all these different factors and will comment on why Durkheim associates different types of suicide to different types of suicide. Durkheim defines suicide as “The term suicide is applied to all cases of death resulting directly or indirectly from a positive or a negative act of the victim himself, which he knows will produce this result” (E. Durkheim, suicide: A Study in Sociology, pg 214). A positive action like shooting or stabbing oneself is the same as refusing to eat food knowing that you will die as a direct result of your actions or non actions...

Pros And Cons Of Assisted Suicide

...Assisted suicide is defined as a physician providing a patient the means to take his or her own life. It is done by the administration of a lethal substance usually a type of medication. It is easy to see why this is such a controversial topic, it is dealing with the voluntary death of an individual. Each side has very strong views and arguments on this matter. Many believe that terminal ill patients have the “right to die,” while others say that we as a society have a moral responsibility “to protect and to preserve all life” (Andre, and Velazquez, Assisted Suicide: A Right or a Wrong?). People who are for assisted suicide say that terminally ill patients who are living in severe pain have the “right to die,” and should be allowed to end...

All Things Fall Apart

...“Things Fall Apart,” by Chinua Achebe SUICIDE: Honor vs. Abomination Alecia Williams Critical Reading, Semester 2, Class RE 260 G Professor E. Singleton May 10th, 2012      Abstract Is it an abomination to God or is it an honorable sacrificial offering unto the Lord to commit suicide is any form or for any reason? Suicide has been a contradicting issue since the dawn of times. In many countries suicide can be viewed as an offering unto God. Many Middle Eastern countries view suicide as an honor. To them such an act requires bravery and courage, and in return they shall be rewarded with eternal life dispersed by the God that they serve. This research paper will access and outline whether or not suicide can be viewed an a honor or an abomination base on the famous novel “Things Fall Apart,” by Chinua Achebe, in relation to the protagonist of the story Oknonkwo. The Qur’an and the Bible             But does suicide deem honor and compensation in any country or any religion; factually? Actually suicide is looked down upon in both the Christian and the Islamic/Muslim religions. The Qur’an clearly states that “O ye who believe! Do not kill yourselves, for truly Allah has been to you Most Merciful. If any do that in rancor and injustice, soon shall we cast him into the fire.” (Qur'an 4:29-30) The Bible also states that “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought...

...are on the verge of suicide? Well the only answer would be to commit it but what if that person can't find the guts to go through it alone. Well then they ask for assistance. This is called assisted suicide. Assisted suicide or in other words euthanasia is the killing by an act of an independent human being for their own benefit. There are many kinds of definitions that one must argue the fact of, what is euthanasia. Well you would have to keep reading farther on. Euthanasia can either be voluntary or non voluntary, when it then becomes murder. But what it is not is that it's not euthanasia unless the death is intentionally. It is not medical actions or withdrawing treatment. But in this essay I will give you the most frequent pros and cons of this issue. My view is that there should be allowed assisted suicide. As many people might know is that many people are against euthanasia than most others. Some examples of people being against it would be that it demeans the value of human life, which the human life could have many different views as people understand the concept of actually doing it. Anyway, in many cases, many religions do not allow the potential suicide and the killing of others. Also it would violate the Hippocratic doctors oath. Some people also believe that someday a miracle might actually happen. Lastly people think that doctors are given too much power, and by some miracle might be wrong or unethical. Also people think that assisted suicide could be mandated...

...problems is a what people believe that the person that commits crime comes from a troubled home with violence or that lives in poverty and such social problems. Social responsibility is the believe that the person that commits a crime is because that person chooses to commit the crime. Social policy might help in a way to help those that commit crime that come from poverty or that live in a violent place like the ghetto or have family violence. But towards social responsibility there might not be much that a person can do because they choose to do crime than be a law abiding citizen. 2. Do you think you might want to become a criminologist? Why or Why not? At the moment maybe not because I have had a plan of becoming a police officer and from there going up to a detective. 3. What do crimes such as doctor-assisted suicide tell us about the nature of the law and about crime in general? Do you believe that doctor-assisted suicide should be legalized? Why or why not? I think that doctor assisted crimes are just saying if the person leaves a note saying that they wanted to die and they wanted assistance that the other person has no responsibility on being called a murderer. So a person that kills a person can make a note and be free of a trial as a murderer. I don’t really think that doctor assisted suicide should be legal because it’s not right or the right for a doctor to help someone die.
