Dogs Make the Best Pets
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. From tea cup size to giant size, from long hair to short hair and even hairless. With all the different breeds of dogs there is a variety of behavior and personalities and a variety of looks. But with all this variety there is one thing that stays constant – the love and companionship a dog gives. Regardless of the type of dog you chose your little furry friend will become your best friend, your family and if you let them will become part of your heart. There is no other animal that would make a better pet than a dog, no other pet provides more unconditional love and affection, and provides more social interaction and companionship than a dog. A dog expresses love and affection in so many ways, from the affectionate licks on our face, the intimate wagging of their tails, to their hugs when you come home. I cannot think of another species in the universe other than a dog that is capable of expressing their unconditional love and unwavering loyalty. When you think of a pet the two obvious choices that come to mind are a dog or a cat. Some people may try to argue that a cat is a better pet, but a cat does not greet you at the door like a dog, nor is a cat as affectionate as a dog. A cat is more independent than a dog, they tend to come around when they need something where a dog actually identifies with their owners mood. My dog can actually sense my mood and react accordingly; when I am sick or sad my dogs lie with me just offering comfort.
If you walk through any neighborhood you will see owners out with their dogs. Whether it is a walk down the street or a game of fetch in the park dog owners are more likely to be active and social. A common neighborhood staple has become the dog park where people gather to socialize with other owners while their dogs socialize with other dogs. I have yet to

Why a Dog?

...reasons why one should make the wise decision to adopt a dog, the first of which is that one gets to save a life by choosing to adopt a dog. In the United States of America only, more than two million dogs are available for adoption on a yearly basis. The main reason why so many dogs are available for adoption is there are many individuals who give up their pets to animal shelters, and the number of individuals who go to shelters to adopt a dog is small. Unfortunately, many animal shelters do not have enough space to house the pets comfortably and sometimes do not even have enough resources to take care of the pets. These reasons sometimes push animal shelters to tight corners and cause them to eliminate some of the pets that have not been adopted. If more people came up and adopted the dogs, fewer animals would be eliminated or tortured by those who adopt them for weird reasons. The other reason why one should adopt a dog is that when one adopts a dog from an animal shelter, he or she not only gets to save money but also gets to adopt healthy dogs. There is a common misconception that animals found in animal shelters usually have something wrong with them. The fact is there are numerous reasons that may make one give up a pet to an animal shelter. However, this is not necessarily because the animal is injured or has a certain fault. Animal rescue centers usually concentrate on bringing up animals in the healthiest way that they can to make it easy for one to adopt a dog, should...

Pet Adoption

...adopt other pets, and never opt to go a pet-dog. Many have associated their preference to the easiness in training the pet as well as the difficulties experienced when outsourcing for the same. Personally I feel that a dog would make an excellent pet on my side. In fact, dogs are indeed the best pets one would wish to have as they provide the desired companionship and support to the owner. Adopting a dog is in itself fulfilling since I will deliberately take care of the pet while providing the necessary care and amenities. Majority of dogs up for adoption are pure breeds, thus possess excellent agility and obedience levels (Banks, 2006). Dogs are beneficial pets especially because of the endless options which a dog can undertake. There are competitions available for the pet dogs for instance they can be useful for therapy purposes or even security services. Such competition avenues are not available to other pets like cats and lizards. As long as the dogs are spayed and neutered on regular basis, most illnesses which affect them will be put at-bay. Thus expensive medications due to illnesses like hip dysplasia, cancer or chronic seizures will not be undertaken translating to a lot of savings. Other dogs are already trained on commands and obedience thus bonding becomes easy. This is not the case with other pets like bird or even lizard where the adopter has to engage in serious training prior to familiarizing with the pets behavior. More often than not, you adopt a dog is probably...

Dog Food

...Dog food is great By T. J. Dunn, Jr., DVM   "What is the best food to feed a dog?" Every day veterinarians are asked that question by dog owners. It's a sincere question because most dog owners want to feed the very best to their furry friends. Good health begins with proper nutrition, regardless of price or convenience of acquisition.   Please understand that the entire discussion on this page relates to healthy dogs with no kidney, thyroid, food allergy or other abnormal conditions. Also, the content of this page is my opinion regarding the "best" dry food and how to determine what you think is "best" to feed dogs.   A big reason why it i is strictly an opinion, there is no single answer to the question "What is the best diet to feed a dog?" Or if there is an answer it is, "It depends".   Over the past 37 years I have been examining dogs and cats in my practices I have made it a point to ask the owner "What diet are you feeding?" I have gotten all sorts of answers but in every case I relate the owner's response to what I am seeing in the patient. And over the years my suggestions regarding what to feed have changed.   Originally I took the pet food manufacturer's declarations as fact -- that an assortment of "Complete and Balanced" pet foods were perfectly nourishing because that wording was not legally permitted on pet food labels unless feeding trials demonstrated its veracity. I eventually discovered I was mistaken in the belief that any "Complete and Balanced"...

Why Humans Should Not Feed Their Dogs

...Why Humans Should Not Feed Their Dogs Human Food American obesity is not only a problem for humans but also for dogs. Families have trouble denying table scraps to their best friend, especially when they are in the habit of doing it. Feeding a dog table scraps can not only quickly lead to obesity and behavioral issues, but it can also impair the dog's health depending on the types of food given to the pet. Even though there are a number of foods safe for dogs to consume, there are even more human foods that can negatively affect a hound's health. Most families do not do enough research on what foods are unsafe for a dog to eat. Americans love their canines and want to reward them with table scraps, but although it may seem...

Pros and Cons Essay

...Dogs versus Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? Vicki Fournier COM/155 November 13, 2011 Genevieve Fraser Dogs vs. Cats: Which Makes a Better Pet? There is no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people say they are dog people, some people say they are cat people, and some people say they are both. Beyond the pros and cons, the decision to what makes a better pet often comes down to a person’s lifestyle, expectations, or in certain circumstances a person’s needs. Remember “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (Hungerford, 1878) Both dogs and cats are common domesticated pets. Dogs have been domesticated for 14,000 years and cats for 7,000 (Cats vs Dogs, n.d.). It appears in my research that most people that were asked this question “which makes a better pet, a dog or a cat” replied with the answer “dogs,” but if dogs are the better pet then why is it that there are 96.3 million homes that own cats and only 77.5 million homes that own dogs. The scientists at Oxford University released a study that claims dogs are smarter than cats and The London Daily Telegraph has reported dogs have been named as more social animals and therefore have bigger brains than the “alone loving cat” (Gatton Star, 2010, p.11). Here is something to think about: have you ever heard of a cat running full speed into a glass door? Sure a dog is a “man’s best friend” and is always there by your side, he can catch a ball in his mouth, and he knows exactly...

Lost Innocents

...The Lost Innocents Richard Napper University of Phoenix When an individual makes the complicated decision of adding a four-legged member to their family it should be viewed as a lifelong commitment. The majority of people who decide to take in a new four legged family member usually have the best intentions at the time. However, life happens and things tend to change. The puppy who was once small and adorable is now full grown, becoming ignored, and is chewing for attention. The kitten who was once a cute little ball of fur is now not so little and clawing the furniture and using the potty in paces other than the litter box. Maybe there was a job loss in the family, or the individual has become homeless because of financial mishaps. With foreclosure on the rise these days due to a bad economy this is happening more often than not lately. One must plan for these types of issues that may arise in the near or distant future. There are a lot of individuals who believe that an animal shelter is the answer of all answers. The awful truth is they are mostly overcrowded and under staffed. More animals get euthanized inside the shelter due to lack of space than adopted by potential lifelong owners in the animal shelter. The animal shelter should not be used as a way to ease guilt on the former owners’ conscience. It should not be used as a dump site or a place to put your older animal like you would a senior citizen in a nursing home. Is animal abandonment ethically and morally wrong...

Why Cats Are Better Than Dogs

...Why cats are better than dogs Many people today own a pet or some sort, but the most popular are dogs and cats. Everyone has their own particular reason for their choice of pet, but I prefer cats over dogs because cats are more independent than dogs. Firstly you never have to worry about trying to fit in 2 or 3 walks every day because with cats you don’t need that. For example, if you were tired or sick and you had a dog, you would still need to walk him/her. Or, it would cost money to hire someone else to walk your dog and it is a headache to arrange. Lastly you could put down enough food and drink and the cat would eat and drink when hungry or thirsty. A dog, on the other hand wouldn’t be able to regulate how much it should eat. Also a cat can go to the bathroom in a litter box, but a dog would need someone to take it out on a walk in order to go to the bathroom. Secondly cats are much quieter pets than dogs especially during times when you want to sleep or relax. For example; let’s say an individual has a tiring day of work and wants to relax. They finally get comfortable when their dog hears a sound outside or sees another dog and starts barking uncontrollably whereas cats keep any moods they have to themselves. Cats do not feel a need to share their opinions with everyone around them. They keep quiet and do not bother with meowing at strangers. When friends arrive at your home, a dog goes into frenzy, barking, leaping and pawing at the newcomer. While the dog does everything...

Canine Arthritis Research Paper

...How dog beds can assist with arthritis The grief of seeing a beloved animal suffer is too much for some pet owners to bear. If you have never owned a pet before, you can never understand the joy a companion animal brings into the lives of its owners. Right from the time it came into their lives as a puppy, a dog is a bundle of joy and excitement, the kids' best pal and an unrepentant loyalist of the family. Advances in veterinary medicine as ensured that the life expectancy of pets has also increased significantly. Thus we see some dogs living to the ripe old age of 13 years. But everything good thing in life has a catch. The negative side of longevity in pets is that they become afflicted with age-induced ailments such as degenerative diseases like arthritis. When dogs are diagnosed with arthritis, dog beds play a large role in making the dog as comfortable as he can be....

...Pit Bull Argument Pit bulls are one of the breeds that have 50% of dog bites, the other 50% is from all other dog breeds combined together. Pit bulls are very dangerous, so having them out with people around could be a very bad idea. Also, in some states pit bulls have been banned before because of how they strike out at people. Pit bulls should not be pets because they have bad reputations and aggressively attack people and even other animals. One reason why pit bulls should not be family pets is because they are very well known, and not in the best way. In the newspaper article it states, “When I walk my two-year-old pit bull mix, people cross the street to avoid us” (Cross 13). This just goes to show that people are clearly not into having...

Dogs in Art

...The Changing Status of Dogs: One Bark at a Time Dylan Sunderland Why do pet owners have paintings and photographs of there pets? Author Katherine Grier writes, “Since the seventeenth century, having portraits made of family members has been one of the most important ways that Americans made statements about their feelings toward one another, their status in their communities, and their desire to preserve the history of their families for posterity” (124). As time progressed animals that were kept as pets began to have different roles for their owners and now they too are being considered a family member. Pets are slowly taking over the world of art as their own roles within the families are changing. Clearly, having pets placed in different forms of art have been used for centuries and they all tell there own different stories as to why they were chosen to be a part of the picture. How about a trip through time from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century to see how dogs have progressed in their roles as pets? Seventeenth century artist, Diego Velázquez, painted the piece of work known as Infante Felipe Próspero. This painting was produced in 1659 using oil on canvas. The location of production is not stated on Artstor.com where the piece was retrieved, but the assumption can be made that it was produced in a Spanish native area because of the title and the author history. This eloquently painted piece of work shows a young human standing next to her puppy...

Why You Should Adopt a Dog

...Why You Should Adopt a Dog Throughout history, we have found evidence that dogs played a very special role in the lives of their human companions. Dogs have left their paw prints throughout time, even in ancient civilizations. Artists have displayed paintings and drawings, showing the bond of man and his oldest companion, the dog. Ancient burial sites displayed evidence of human love for their dogs. Canine skeletal remains, were often seen with their human remains. Many ancient graves were found to have dogs buried alongside their human, with treats, providing them with a little something to snack on in the afterlife. This evidence proves man’s best friend is not a 20th century ideal, but can be traced back thousands of years. (Lobell, J. A., & Powell, E. 2010) I have such a love for dogs, and am the proud owner of 6 rescue dogs, ages one to seventeen. I had a dog as a child, and she started the love story that I have today with my canine partners. I believe this is God’s second best creation, (behind man) and at times, I feel they are His best. I adopted my first dog from the ASPCA in New York City. Micky was an abused Poodle mix, and became my first dogs as an adult. I always loved dogs, but after adopting Micky, I became an advocate for rescue, and adoption. My life was forever changed. The sad statistics show close to 2.7million cats and dogs are killed each year in our animal shelters across the US. Many people have found it necessary to surrender their pets when...

Compare and Contrast Dog and Cats

...Cats and Dogs Instructor Aimee Garten February 13, 3012 Our amazing planet, Earth is home to a diverse amount of humans, insects, animals and other organism which share a common bond of directly and indirectly habitation. Americans own 73 million dogs and 90 million cats. They become best friends, soul mates, family members, and even surrogate children. Relationships with cats and dogs are some of the longest and most intimate of our lives (PBS.org 2012). The saying, “A dog is man’s best friend” may hold some truth for many, but dogs are not the only animal companion people enjoy. For many individuals, a cat is their best friend. Providing a loving home to either of these animals is a huge responsibility an owner may undertake. It’s an honor and a pleasure to possess either one. Cats and dogs are the two most popular domestic animals for companionship. Cats and dogs offer their owners different amounts of companionship and personal fulfillment. When you show them love they will unconditional return that love back. Even though cats and dogs share some of the same similarities, they are truly different in many ways. The similarities, and the differences are countless between cats and dogs, however, let’s discuss what makes them similar. First, we shall examine the similarities these two beings have in common. It’s evidently that both are of the mammal kingdom and both have hair for coating. They mutually have sharp teeth, tail, four legs, and claws. Cats and Dogs give birth...
