Women of the “Blues”

The last couple of days of class, we have heard several artists who sing the “Blues”. The “Blues”, from my recollection, sounded like, The Blues Brothers. A few things I can recall are a repeated tone and a harmonica added to a short story. The artists that we listened to were Saffire, Curtis Salgado, Cowboy Junkies and Leon Redbone. The “Blues” were described as being sad, mellow with a slow tempo, and tells a story. Instruments that are linked to the “Blues” are the harmonica, a piano, and a base guitar. We learned that the “Blues” came from New Orleans and has been heard since the 1920’s in places like smaller clubs and bars. The women of the “Blues” usually sung torch songs, men who wronged women; ironically, men were the writers of such torch songs. Even though I enjoyed listening to all of the groups, Saffire and Cowboy Junkies were my favorite of the four. Saffire was different from the Cowboy Junkies in the way that the rhythm was more upbeat; they also added humor into their song. They also used sarcasm in the song, Wild women don’t have the Blues. An instrument that Saffire’s group had that was not in Cowboy Junkies group was the piano.
I felt that there were more similarities between Saffire and Cowboy Junkies than differences. Some of the similarities, of course, are the groups consist of women, both sing torch songs, both have a mellow tone to their music and similar instruments played. Both of the groups spoke of separation between a man and women and for the most part the man was the cause of the separation. Saffire and Cowboy Junkies try to relate everyday tragedies that occur in most lives of women in their songs. They make you relate and feel what is being said. When a person can connect to a song; the song will make a lasting impression upon them. The instruments I heard in both the groups were the harmonica and the base. The singer’s voices of both groups were low; it was almost difficult to understand what was being said, especially, if you were not paying attention. It was like their voices were hypnotic. The differences between Saffire and Cowboy Junkies were the instruments, the key that the songs were sung in and the beat. There were instruments used by Cowboy Junkies that were not used in Saffire were an accordion, mandolin, drums, fiddle and various percussion. The instruments gave a more variety in sound from Saffire. Although, the piano sounds beautiful when played with the “Blues”, Cowboy Junkies did not incorporate one into the songs we heard. There may be several types of “Blues” sung by woman groups they all ring true in uniting the women’s spirit in what is felt at one point or another in their life. Saffire states no one is immune to the blues, and at least one time in everyone’s life, whether being a man or woman, will go through a rough period and can be related back to a blues song.

...WOMEN IN MUSIC Read the article “Black Music Critics and the Classic Blues Singer” by Phillip McGuire and answer the following discussion questions: 1. Why were the Blues considered “distasteful” by society? Blues was considered “distasteful” by society because there were so many people going around preaching and brainwashing the public. They wanted people to believe that blues was crude, barbaric, vulgar, suggestive, and a music form that should appeal only to animal emotions. 2. How were blues-women viewed by other “trained, professional” musicians? John Wesley Work III viewed the blues-women as a singer with “not much hope in earth-a thoroughly disillusioned individual… [who] translated everyday happenings into her own intimate inconvenience. Later in the article Dave Peyton from the Defender stated that black musicians should be trained and understand what they should do to meet European standards. 3. Discuss ways in which songs by blues-women represented social protest and reflected personal views of oppression. (You may give example of song lyrics.) Lyrics and titles represented social protest and personal views of oppression in the songs of blues-women. Throughout this article McGuire provided a number of examples that allowed his readers to see how blues-women exemplified these things...

According to Kim, W., & Mauborgne, R., “The blue ocean include the potential industries that do not exist at present and all the untapped market spaces and demand demographics that will take shape as and when such created from scratch” (2004). The blue ocean can be brought up two different ways, one by being completely new to the industry and there is nothing quite like it in comparison. The other would be created within the red ocean by copying some of it functionality but not all. The blue ocean is the reason why there is so much competition. Everyone is looking for the next best thing. Innovations and plans coming into reality and being the only product of its kind out there. The marketing business thrives on new products how it can be introduced to the public and if its cost worthy. Companies can succeed more if they think out of the box for the next best thing that has not been introduced before and will blow the consumer mind and will make everyone want one. Varsity Blues

...Varsity Blues is a movie about men who struggle to prove their manhood in the face of their coach. The conflict is that the coach only cares about winning, not the well-being of the players and the players are unhappy with the situation. Althought the conflict may be relevant to the story; it does little to emphasize the ignorance of their society towards gender conflicts. The attitude of the film is that women’s lives revolve around men. Although the women are well treated, their identity is dependant on another person. The cheerleader, Darcy, confesses to John ‘Mox’ Moxon (The main character) that she only wanted to go out with him and Lance (The previous starter quarterback) because that gave her a guaranteed opportunity to get out of their small town. Belonging to the school hero also helped Darcy feel like she was better than other women were. The way Darcy gets both of the men to go out with her is by giving them the opportunity to prove to themselves that they are men, which is by letting them have sex with her. This reasserts the notion that women respect a real man, and how they show their respect to that man is by having sex with him. Mox’s girlfriend, Jules, is very similar to Darcy in the sense that she shows him how to be a real man. However, Jules’s case is different because with her, masculinity and femininity are not as black and white; Jules’s brand of masculinity involves loyalty, taking charge, being sensitive, appreciating others, and being a winner. Until...

Quiz 1: Spiritual Beginnings

...B. The Blues 4. Read the short article about the incident which inspired W. C. Handy to write “St. Louis Blues”: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/jazz/st-louis-blues-by-wc-handy/. In the song, Handy uses a sentence he overheard (“That man got a heart lak a rock cast in the sea”) to tell a story from a woman’s point of view. What makes her say she “Got de St. Louis Blues” and feels “jes as blue as I can be”? (20 points) The woman says she "Got de St.Louis Blues" because her lover left her. "Or else he wouldn't have gone so far from me". When the woman says that she is feeling blue, she means that she is very sad. "Blues" is another word for depression. There is no reason for her to stay alive when her lover has gone away. The woman describes her man as heartless and mean when she says… "a heart lak a rock cast in the sea". She wants to express her sorrow and to say that if he had any feelings towards her, he would have never left her alone. 5. What ‘magical’ powers does the “Hoochie Coochie” man possess? In what way is he similar to the male-lover in “St. Louis Blues,” whom the complaining woman describes as the “Blackest man in de whole of St. Louis”? (20 points) The man that is described in this song has the power to attract women and to make them fall in love with him. If this song was written today, I guess we would have called this man a "player". Both him and the man in "St.Louis Blues" have the ability to make women fall to...

...whole ocean. Blue loved the snow. The only thing she loved more then the snow was her town, Sunset Palm. Her town was small and poor with colors that stood out against the dark blue ocean. As Blue walked through the center of town, her ears were filled by the song of her town and the noise of the people at the stands trying to sell what they could. When she looked at all the stands selling key chains, pots and pans, bracelets, and fresh made chocolates she got excited. Her eyes bounced from stand to stand. She had as much excitement as a three year old in a candy shop. Blue was fifteen years old and had seen all of the shops before, but every time she felt the same excitement. As she walked home, she froze in place when she overheard two older women speaking in muffled voices. Blue could hear the stocky pale women in green cloth with lots of beads in her hair whispered, “Are you sure that Milo will hit in the next week?” After a long pause, the other woman who was tall...
