The United State would have not entered World War II if Italy, Japan and Germany had stopped after their early conquests. The people of America did not want to play any role in the European war. The great oceans, on both sides of the American continent made them feel safe.
It was not until the first bombs fell on the island of Hawaiian that the great debate if the United State should be involved in world war two that came to an end. Just a few numbers of Americans had been to Japan. On December 7 President Roosevelt addressed the Congress asking for the support for the war against the Empire of Japan. Later on, Germany declared war on the United State.using the Selective Service System, over ten million men were recruited in the army. The US used a number of series of battles in the Pacific to defeat Japan. Some of these battles series included the Battle of Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the battle of Midway.General MacArthur who was an American General using a tactic called island hoping. This was a process of capturing island after island which eventually weakened the Japanese. Both the United State and Japan sffered loss of life and heavy casualties. The Japanese were willing to fight to death and this raised a lot of questions on what was going to happen when the U.S finally attacks the main land. This led to a decision by the U.S to drop an atomic bomb. In August 6, 1945, the Japanese surrendered after an atomic bomb was droped in Hiroshima. This was the greatest mistake Hitler made. President Roosevelt was a happy man because the United State was at war. He even went to an extend of manipulating Japanese army into firing the first shots. President Roosevelt had expected the first Japanese attack to be against the Philippines. He was shocked at the attack on Pearl Harbour. The destruction of the battle ships led to a number of deaths. The United State had a huge

Repetition In Bruce Dawe's Poem 'Homecoming'

...that war is repetitive. Example: the repetition of the word “they’re” as the first word of a line. The use of repetition in “Homecoming” is to emphasise the emptiness and dullness of going to war and their homecoming. Bruce Dawes purpose in using repetition is to symbolise the repetition of war. This technique can effect the audience by creating an atmosphere of empathy for the people who go to war. From using repetition in words such as “ day after day”, Bruce constructs a mood of dullness. Soldiers aren’t appreciated  When the soldiers came home to their homecoming, they were only met by dogs. “raise muzzles in mute salute”. Motivating Young Readers Through Adolescent Literature

...them will keep students motivating and will hold their interest (Herz & Gallo, 1996). One such book is Rifles for Watie, a historical fiction novel and Newbery Medal winner. It was written by Harold Keith in 1957. This book can be used to connect the history of the Civil War with a students everyday life. The story is about a sixteen year old boy named Jefferson (Jeff) Davis Bussey. He joins the Union side of the Civil War and while serving gets noticed by for his intelligence, skill, and calm disposition. He becomes a spy, pretending to be part of the Rebel side, gaining information for the Union. Students will be able to relate to this young man. He struggles with many of the same things as students do today. The older men see him as young and inexperienced and not as valuable. Jeff also misses his family and struggles with the realization that even though the Rebels are his enemy, they are real people who face the same issues as his family. It brings the Civil War into reality. The Civil War brings up many good questions for teachers. The young men who fought in the war were about the same age as students in their classrooms. Teachers could discuss with students how they would feel about going to war and what type of issues would they be willing to...

Essay on Poems

...Siegfried Sassoon in 1917 during the time when Word War 1 was going on. He was provoked to write this poem because he was unhappy of the effect it had on soldiers. The poem ‘The Solitary Reaper’ on the other hand, has been written during the romantic era by William Wordsworth in 1803. It is a poem about how Wordsworth is affected by a song sung by a woman reaping grain by herself in a field. ‘The Rear- Guard’ is an anti-war poem about how violent and cruel war is and that it drives people crazy. The poem starts off with “Groping along the tunnel step by step”. In this line, the word ‘groping’ has the connotation that the Rear- Guard is lost in the tunnel. In the last line of the first stanza, it says “sniffed the unwholesome air”. Air is normally a good thing but the adjective ‘unwholesome’ gives us a feeling that the air is unhealthy. As he keeps going along he notices “a mirror smashed”. He feels even worse than before as a smashed mirror symbolises bad luck. The poet is showing that this person is going crazy due to the war, believing in superstition. The poet shows us how far away he is under by using alliteration “Fifty feet below” and “rosy gloom” an oxymoronic term (he is feeling the good and bad points of the war above). The Rear- Guard finds someone lying on the ground “saw someone lie”. He exclaims “I am looking for headquarters”. The poet has written this because he wants to show the negative points of war by telling us what war does to soldiers; it makes them talk to...

Cold War

...Cold War Ella Cooke Prof: Sharon Squires April 28, 2014 Cold War When people hear the word war, what are some words that are used to describe it? Most people would naturally say battle, conflict, fighting, injuries, death, opinions, and these would all be true, however when we hear of the “Cold War”, would it also include all the words that were just mentioned? Wars are typically fought between two opposing sides who don’t agree with one another, and it usually involves using weapons. With that being said is the “Cold War” the same type as other wars such as the Civil War, World War 1 and 11, the answer could be yes and no. While it was a war involving two different sides, it wasn’t fought using weapons, but with words, which some might find confusing. Upon doing research on this particular subject it finally made sense on how a war could be fought without using weapons, only words, stay tuned. The easiest way to start anything is to start at the beginning, so what is exactly is the “Cold War”, what parties were involved, and why was it fought. Although there is not concrete answer as to when it has started, it is estimated to have begun in 1947-1991. It was between two different countries the United States, and the Soviet Union, but keep in mind that it wasn’t fought with weapons, rather in words. Both parties wanted to be in control of the world that we refer to as America and since neither one was going to give in or compromise they were going to war. The only positive...

Power of Words

...A word is a unit of language, consisting of many spoken words. A word can occur in a speech, sentence, statement, story, or news. Words give us the ability to communicate. Words have played an important role in our world today. Whether a word is spoken or written, words have the power to change our world. As you improve your critical thinking, reading, and writing skills by looking at the stories, you will understand how words play a major impact. Try and use your words and respond and think critically. You might want to try bringing you own knowledge, opinions, and experiences, and try and relate them to what you are reading. For example, In Mortimer J. Alder’s short story “ How to Mark a Book” he is trying to persuade us to “write between the lines” (Alder 2). When you are reading a story, you are reading between the lines. By reading or writing between the lines, that gives you a better understanding of what the author is trying to tell you. Alder mentions in his text the importance of marking up a book (Alder 9). First it keeps you awake. In the second place, reading if it is active, is thinking, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written (Alder 9). Finally writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts you expressed (Alder 9). This can relate to responding critically. By marking up the book, this gives you a chance to relate your own thoughts and opinions to the text. Another example of why words have so much power is in Robin...

Children of the Holocaust

...During the Holocaust, millions of Jews, gypsies, and members of other groups were persecuted and murdered by Nazi occupied Europe. However, many forget to acknowledge that among these were children. It may never be known exactly how many children were murdered but it is said that as many as some 1.5 million children may have fell victim to the Nazi party. Although children were not a main target of the Nazi's violence, they did fall subject to persecution along with their parents. Jewish children were first exposed to persecution in school. Many of their friends who were not Jewish began not socializing with them and even began to treat them in prejudice ways. This was soon followed with the announcement that, "German Jewish children were prohibited from attending German schools (www.mtsu.edu/.baustin/children.html). The life of children had quickly become as torn apart as their parents. However, there were more efforts to help the children escape the grips of the Nazi rule. Before 1939, several thousand children were able to escape in "Kindertransports to the Netherlands, Great Britain, Palestine, and the United States (www.mtsu.edu/.baustin/children.html). Those who were not able to escape were placed in ghettos and transit camps. These ghettos and transit camps served as the foreground to the death and slave labor camps that would soon follow. It was written in a Jewish diary, A Jewish ghetto in the traditional sense is impossible; certainly a closed ghetto is...

The Gettysburg Address

...history of the country, as it goes back to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and later also the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights. The ideal in these is that liberty and equality go hand in hand, but this is not always the case. The American Civil War is one the greatest examples on this. The war had its roots in the question about slavery, and it ended up costing the lives of more Americans than all of the U.S.’s subsequent wars together. On the afternoon of November 19 1863, four months after one of the Civil Wars bloody fights, the president at that time, Abraham Lincoln, holds a speech in which he encourages the people of America to end the war. Furthermore, he reminds the audience of the ideals on which America was founded, and how the Civil War is threatening them. Last but not least, Lincoln honors the fallen and encourages people to finish their unfinished work. Abraham Lincoln frames his speech in a historical perspective and introduces two of the most important American values already in his first sentence of his speech. “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” (P. 1, ll. 1-2). With this introduction to his speech, Abraham Lincoln presents two of the fundamental values of America: equality and liberty. He begins his speech saying ‘fourscore and seven years ago’. This is a very noble way of saying ’87 years ago’ and it refers...
