I noticed all my results were very close and even some of the same results on the different exercises. My results Competencies were Adhering to values, cooperating, organizing, following instructions, delivering results, and stargazing. My results on my Work Cultures results were ethical, high powered and supportive. My results for Career Interest Profiler were conventional, investigative and realistic. On both my Competencies and Work Culture Preferences results, ethical came up. Both exercises showed I promote equal opportunities and want everything to be fair. I also noticed following procedures came up more than once. Being organized came up more than once too. Showing I follow instructions from others without unnecessarily challenging authority; and follows procedures and policies. My results I believe are pretty close to who I am.

Studen's Work Ethic

...In the article “The Work Ethic, in a Modern Guise”, Joanne B. Ciulla, argues that traits exhibited by today’s college students will be troublesome in the workplace. She begins her argument by stating that she is amazed to see her past students who were irresponsible changed into hard working employees with successful futures. She is rather delightful when she learns that her previous students are exceptionally good at their jobs. College students value the external rewards of work over learning for its own sake. A survey done on first year students attending the University of California, Los Angeles, showed that a majority of the students attended college to make more money. The way students participate in their studies further shows the reason why students are in a learning environment. College professors can get the idea of what type of person a student is just by seeing how students approach their studies. Ciulla states that many students believe that they are “Entitled to Do-Over.” This is when students receive their test or assignments and see that the grade they received is not what they want; a majority of them ask the teacher if there is any way to improve the score despite it being the final grade. Students will do whatever it takes to raise their grade even when they are aware that they do not deserve the extra points. They aren’t aware that they don’t deserve a higher grade. They just think they deserve higher because they simply re-do the assignment. Ciulla makes...

Work Ethic

...Q1: The attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments I have experienced According to Strang (2002) America’s economic future faces the newest yet the most dangerous challenge of new generation of employees. This fact is further supported by the Sheehy’s report that is an accurate description of the new generation of employees. Employees in the current world do not regard hard work as a means to an end. This new generation of employees wants the easy way out or a short cut to wealth creation. To them, wealth can be acquired without sweat or hard work and they have many examples of people who have acquired vast amounts of wealth without pain. Unfortunately, these people that they look up to have acquired their wealth illegally without any convictions. Young employees do not care whether the business grows or not, to them they are working just for the convenience before they move on to well paying jobs. In the work environments that I have experienced, the Sheehy report gives an accurate picture of what is on the ground. Young employees consider themselves as the bosses to the customer. They believe that the customers depend on their services instead of the opposite. Most of my former colleagues believed that the companies we worked at depended on us entirely, and that our absence would lead to the collapse of the company. The management was viewed as a burden, and the people who had occupied those positions, got there due to family connections, friendships...

Work Ethics

...Page 1 Workplace Ethical Dilemma Paper Laura Fisher University of Phoenix January 30,2012 Page 2 There was a time that I was faced a dilemma at my work place. I saw a teacher at my job go into our bosses desk and take money out of the petty cash bag that we have. The teacher went into the office and was going through the desk like they were looking for papers. I saw them unzip the bag and take look through it. When I walked into the office the teacher jumped like she had been shot and told me that she was looking for training material that we had just gone over in our meeting. I never really thought about her taking any money out since she got up and left the desk when I came in the office. The teacher had never stolen anything in the past. There would be times that our boss would send us to the store and tell us to get money out of the bag and make sure that we brought back the receipt. So when I saw her going in the bag I just thought she was told to get money out of it to purchase something for work. Later in the week I told my boss that I need some supplies for my classroom. She told me that she would go get some petty cash out of the bag and let me go get what I needed so that I made sure I had the right stuff to the project. When she went to the cash she could not find the bag. It was not in the spot that she kept it. My boss was looking all around the office to see where the bag may have been placed. She...

A New Work Ethic

...Running Head: A NEW WORK ETHIC 1 A New Work Ethic: Case Study 4.4 Patricia Woodhouse Harry Mamaux Business Ethics- Bus 309 October 30, 2011 A New Work Ethic 2 1. Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be on the work environments you have experienced. After reviewing the case study a new work ethic, it reminds me of the job I have today. The workers attitudes are just that of my coworkers I work with every day. There attitudes are unbelievable. I currently work in Customer Service for a major cable, internet and phone provider. Most employees at my place of employment don’t value their jobs. They don’t see customer service in their future and many say it’s not their last stop. They too don’t like hard work and long hours. I often hear co-workers brushing customers off the phone with a quick transfer to another department, that can’t even resolve that customers issues. Many of them don’t have any work ethic. Work ethic is a belief in the moral benefit and importance of work and its inherent ability to strengthen character. I think the importance of work will show if you are performing in a job that you love. In most work environments that I have worked in it’s the same. My co-workers hated that job, they hated the long hours and they hated the...

A New Work Ethic

...A New Work Ethic 1 Running head: A NEW WORK ETHIC A New Work Ethic Business Ethics January 24, 2011 A New Work Ethic 2 As I read the case study “A New Work Ethic,” I began to noticed strong similarities of my own experiences and the work environment explored by the human resource manager James Sheehy. What he had uncovered happened to be very shocking. He described this new generation of workers as having a frightening new work ethic with no regards to superiority. Sheehy states they display contempt for customers, indifference to quality and service, unrealistic expectations about the world of work, and have a get-away-with-what-you-can attitude. His investigation on the matter reminds me of a group of colleagues at a previous work environment of my own. This certain group of colleagues had a work ethic like no other that I had seen before. Their work habits displayed pure laziness and self absorbed behaviors which weighed heavily on company production as well as company time. Their bad habits not only put a burden on the company’s pocket book, but easily influenced new employees to do the same and angered the ones willing to put forth the effort. The implications of the Sheehy’s work ethic study describes a grim outcome for the future of American businesses. Much of America’s younger generation lack the initiative and strong work ethics of their older predecessors. The young people...

A New Work Ethic

...Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in work environments you have experienced. Sheehy’s reports on the attitudes of his fellow employees, is very typical of young adults today it seems. When Sheehy reported a whole generation of workers with a frightening new work ethic of contempt for customers, indifference to quality and service, and a get-away-with-what-you-can attitude depicts how the work ethics of our youth is today. (Shaw, 2010) It is very apparent when you go to fast food chains, department clothing stores, and sometimes in the grocery store. I have not experienced this type of behavior in my own work environments personally. I have been fortunate not to work in the medical field and insurance most of my professional career and have not seen these types of attitudes or behavior described by Sheehy. The generation I have worked with has usually been older than me. However, I have seen these types of attitudes in my day to day life when I go to fast food restaurants or go shopping in stores at the malls. The sales associates who are young high school or college students don’t show any type of professional work ethics in certain stores. They don’t greet you or ask if you need help in some department stores I have been to. 2. Explain the implications of the work ethic Sheehy describes for the future of American business. The implication of the Sheehy’s work ethic case describes a non- ethical and grim outcome for the future of American...

Ethics in the Work Place

...Ethics in the workplace can be defined by how peoples personal standards or the lack of personal standards are comprised that can negatively or positively effect a business or place of employment for a person or other individuals. Ethics is defined by a singular person and their ethical beliefs may differ from other co-workers. Workplace ethics are therefore governed by the place of employment and the authority at that employer. For example the ethics for my employer at the Department of the Navy may differ from that of a person employed by a Christian non-profit organization but as I previously said the one acts at their place of employment is up to that individual person and they must be accountable for how they personally act. The majority of my adult life has been associated with the military in some form or fashion. I was an active duty US Navy sailor for four years and served in the Iraq and Afghanistan theatre during my enlistment. After my enlistment I have worked for a non-profit veteran’s organization (Operation Stand Down, Nashville) and again being employed with the Department of the Navy, so my ethical belief have been shaped in the last ten years majorly on what the military believed and just because the military stressed a certain way, does not mean it is ethically right. With that being said I did not forget what my parents taught me in my childhood because I can still remember my father saying to me after I had done something along the lines of punching my...

Aldi Work Ethics

...outlet nearby. By 1950, the Albrecht brothers owned 13 stores in Germany. Today ALDI operates over 8000 stores worldwide and over 1400 in the United States alone (Amann, 2010). In 2010 more than 200 ALDI store managers in 32 states filed a lawsuit against the U.S. division of the German discount grocer, saying they were wrongly classified as exempt from overtime and should have been paid for working more than 40 hours a week. The basis of the complaint made by Howard McNelley, a former ALDI Manager, concerns his classification as a Salaried Manager even though his duties were simply stocking shelves, cleaning, running a register, and many times he was the only employee in the store (Martin, 2010). Aldi stores will many times operate an entire work day with less than 3 employees in a store. During slow periods the employee designated as the manager will sometimes be the only employee present and will simply run a register. The hiring, firing, and promoting of all store employees is handled by the District Manager. The only duty performed exclusively by the Salaried Manager is the preparation of the schedule, all other duties are shared by the hourly workers or performed exclusively by the District Manager. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the federal overtime law setting wage and hour pay, sets certain conditions to be a salaried manager as...

My ex co-worker when he started at the company was only for a few months before while we found someone to replace him because he was temporary. At that time we actually got along and I taught him the ropes of the facilities since I was asked to. During that time he paid attention and did the job the way he was supposed to. So when he got placed back there permanently he started doing his job the way I taught him but after 6 months he started slacking off. This got to me because it made me look like I didn’t do my job and train him properly and we had are arguments and what not and I thought we got passed it. Well turns out he wasn’t doing his job and when talking about are argument he made up lies. Ethics in the Work Place

...Subject: Business Ethics in the Workplace This is an informative memo about “ethics in the workplace”. By Sharpe, F and Roe, A. The articles address the similarity of workplace ethics and their differences. Both articles examine how to adequately incorporate ethics in workplace. Both articles views on ethics in the workplace are similar as far as training program for all employees. Practicing positive workplace ethics within their organization was key issues in both articles. Both agreed not only should written policies be put into place but reinforce through ethical training programs and recommending ways to create a business culture of acceptable practices in the workplace by creating ethical business policies and guidelines. Both articles agreed on training programs to build a strong ethical workplace environment. In contrast Sharpe found that ethical practices improved business among employees relationship through honesty and respect which starts with management than staff. Sharpe focus was more social responsibility in business ethics, conducting workshops through the company style. Roe focus was more ethical practicing made mandatory through training to ensure that employees behave. I agreed with both articles but I lean more on the side of Sharpe because workplace ethics is a style. A style created through management which defines how and what employees do whether acceptable or not. I’ve identify with the honesty part of work ethic and how it applies...
