Educators in the United States have long argued about the effects of part-time work on the academic performance of high school students. Though many studies claim that there is a relationship between a student’s grade point average (GPA) – the standard measure academic performance in high schools and universities in the US – and the number of hours the students is employed, there seems little agreement on what that relationship is. Several studies (Sneider, 1982; Wallace, 1988; Johnson and Payne, 1989) suggest that students who work after school do better in their school work than students who do not have a job. To gain insight into the problem, library instruction environments of nineteen high schools were explored. The schools were selected based on whether their graduates did well or poorly on information-skills assignments integrated in a required first-year college course. The librarians in the nineteen schools were asked to characterize their working relationships with teachers, estimate their students’ information-literacy achievement, and provide data on their staffing and budgets. While the disagreement is real, we can take solace in the fact that there appears to be significant consensus on the actuals drivers that play a significant role in empowering the poor, being Capital, Knowledge, and Opportunity. In discussing poverty, it’s important to note that, contrary to common belief, poverty is an epidemic not specifically reserved for developing nations, and continues to be a major problem in the US. The below graph, derived from the US Census Bureau highlights the level of poverty, per race within the US in 2011. Some interesting observations include the incredibly high poverty rates among African American and Hispanics, and the obvious intra-race poverty disparity.
