Discuss the Role of Trade Unions, Governments and Human Resource Managers in Promoting Equality and Diversity in the Workplace. Draw on Research Literature Discussed in the Course to Critically Examine the Difficulties

...1. Introduction Equality and diversity in the workplace has become a central topic in the debate within the human resource management literature. Traditionally, society has been divided into different social classes, which arise from different aspects such as access to material resources, access to education and employment opportunity. These divisions in class differences have reflected and have fundamental influence over employment relationships (Williams and Adam-Smith, 2009). However, inequality nowadays is more complex. It has gone beyond the issue of class differences, thus the lack of equality and non-discrimination framework impedes the progress of equality and diversity in contemporary organisations (Fawcett Report, 2013). The presented paper builds on the existing literature on the topic of equality and diversity in the workplace, and aims to examine the role of trade unions, governments and human resource managers in promoting equality and diversity within organisations. Particular difficulties of advancing equality in practice are investigated and solutions to overcome these issues are discussed. Overall, the paper is structured into three main sections. To begin, a short outline of different approaches used in addressing equality and diversity will be considered. The first main section highlights the role of the stakeholders in promoting equality and diversity in the workplace. The second section evaluates numerous challenges preventing the promotion of equality...

Cultural Diversity

...Cultural Diversity and The Workplace Phyllis Bayard SOC220 October 3, 2015 Professor Mary Brito Cultural Diversity and the Workplace In our society, cultural diversity and lifestyles vary to an extreme. All across the world there are many different cultures, and many of them live in the United States. With more and more people entering the U.S. daily, we as a nation are becoming more and more diverse, not just in our culture, but in the workplace and schools. In the United States, alone we have many different cultures, religions, ethnic groups, and races just to name a few. While organizational interest in diversity continues to grow, “ U.S. Census Bureau predicts the U.S. population will be considerably older and more racially and ethnically diverse by 2060” (Dauber, 2015). They have also predicted that the non-Hispanic white population will peak at roughly 200 million by 2024, followed by a slow decrease. During that time it is predicted that both Hispanic and Asian will more than double. The total minority population is predicted to double by 2060. Cultural diversity exists even more with women in the work place. Women are hired, but only allowed to work in certain positions. For instance, beautiful women were hired to do masculine jobs only to be discriminated against because it was thought that they could not compete with men in the same positions. Therefore, women who enter a profession in order to climb...

It is imperative to note that the modern working environment calls for the need to manage the diverse workforce. As such, the management shoulders the responsibility of ensuring that they effectively manage diverse employees within their organization. It would sound simple to think that managing such team does not require tact and knowledge. However, it is pertinent to note that the aspect of diversity encompasses many fields like ethnic background, race, and age of individuals, gender, educational level, and the personality type of people. Additionally, diversity involves how the individuals perceive themselves and others of the different background than theirs. Hence, the perceptions will interfere with how they interact with others and the manner in which the organization will operate (Blunt, 2009). Therefore, for various assortments of employees to be in a position to function effectively within an organization, the human resource personnel must effectively deal with a broad range of issues.
