In modern society there are numerous forms of Christianity. Many may be familiar with Catholics, Baptist, or Protestants. One form of Christianity that has created mixed views since its start is that of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Some thoughts that may come to mind when people think of Jehovah’s Witnesses are cult activity, unusual Christian practices, and domineering individuals. This paper will take a look at the life as a Jehovah’s Witness. The paper will cover some of the common practices and beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The paper will also try to clear up some of the misconceptions that others believe about Jehovah’s Witnesses. The author of this paper has taken the time to research the Jehovah Witness religion by visiting a local Kingdom Hall, conducting an in-person interview with an actual Jehovah Witness, and also conducting research on the internet, as well as the library.

Background Information The religion of the Jehovah’s Witness began in at the end of the 19th century. The religion was started a small group of Bible students close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1879 the students began publishing what is known as the Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. The group that was formerly known as International Bible Students became Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1931. Membership of religion is marked by baptism. According to the Jehovah’s Witness website (2009),” Baptism symbolizes one’s dedication to God and is taken by those of responsible age who have made an informed decision. Baptism is by complete water immersion.—Matthew 28:19; Acts 18:9”. The organization of the Jehovah’s Witness According to the Jehovah’s Witness website (2009), is “Following the model of first-century Christianity, Jehovah’s Witnesses have no clergy-laity division. All baptized members are ordained ministers and share in the preaching and teaching work. Witnesses are organized into congregations of up to 200 members. Spiritually mature men in each congregation serve as elders. A body of elders supervises each congregation. About 20 congregations form a circuit, and about 10 circuits are grouped into a district. Congregations receive periodic visits from traveling elders. Guidance and instructions are provided by a multinational governing body made up of longtime Witnesses who currently serve at the international offices of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brooklyn, New York.—Acts 15:23-29; 1 Timothy 3:1-7”.
This international brotherhood of people of all races is made up of about 7.3 million practicing members organized into more than 105,000 congregations in more than 230 lands.”
The Interview During the research process for this paper the author had the chance of interviewing an actual Jehovah’s Witness. Contacting one of the local Kingdom Halls, the author was able to set-up a meeting for one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses to come to my home to talk with me. I explained to one of the Elders of the Kingdom Hall that I needed some information for a school project that I was working on. The Elder was very helpful, taking down my contact information. The following day I received a phone call from a woman by the name of Margo Williams. Margo stated that “she would be glad to meet with me the following Saturday at my home”. Margo arrived at my home that Saturday at 11:30am. Right away Margo made the interview process feel very comfortable. Margo told me not to be afraid to ask any question I felt the need to ask. During the interview the following questions were asked: 1.What are the important holidays and traditions of this religion? 2. How has religion shaped your life? 3. What are the challenges, if any, to practicing this particular religion? 4. I would ask if the religion has a special purpose for its followers. 5. I want to know when the religion was created. 6. I would ask some differences between this religion and another religion? 7. I want to know what roles due members of the congregation play? 8. I would ask how the religion views alcohol. 9. I want to know if the religion practices rituals. 10. I also would ask how the religion has changed overtime if it has According to (M. Williams, personal communication, December 12, 2009), the only day that is recognized as a holiday for Jehovah’s Witnesses is the Memorial of Christ’s Death, which usually takes place around the same time as Christian Easter and the Jewish Passover. Jehovah’s Witnesses accept this holiday because it was created by Christ himself. During this time the Lord’s Supper is observed. According to M. Williams (2009), Jehovah’s Witnesses do not celebrate any other holidays. Holidays such as Easter Christmas and Birthdays are viewed as praising idols. According to the Jehovah’s Witness website (2009), “We commemorate the Memorial of Christ’s death, the most important religious event of the year for Jehovah’s Witnesses. Throughout the year, we enjoy parties, picnics, and other events without feeling bound to obligations or to a fixed date. We may also celebrate special events such as weddings and anniversaries. However, we do not celebrate holidays that have non-Christian religious origins or those that promote nationalism. We are not opposed to celebrations in general or to the giving of gifts”. Additional traditions of Jehovah’s Witnesses according to M. Williams (2009) are completing a certain amount of hours per month witnessing. To witness is to spread the word of Jehovah. This can be done in what is called field service, which is the most common way. Field service is when the Jehovah’s Witnesses go door to door to try to arrange meetings with other individuals to discuss the religion, and to try to get the individual to attend one of their meetings at the Kingdom Hall. Margo explained to me that even if the individual may not be interested they like to at least leave them with the most current issue of the Watchtower. The Watchtower is the largest international religious magazine in the world. The Watchtower deals with modern topics such as money and greed, to childhood obesity. The Watchtower for some is used for that individual that may be lost or stuck on what to do on certain topics. The Watchtower serves as a guide of what the true Christian should do in certain situations. (M. Williams, 2009)
Jehovah’s Witnesses are also expected to attend services at the Kingdom Hall three times a week. These meetings usually occur on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. Sunday is the most important of the days. Jehovah’s Witnesses are also expected to obey the Bible, however according to the Jehovah’s Witness website (2009), “While we have strong religious convictions, we are not fundamentalists in the sense that the term has come to be used. We do not believe that every passage in the Bible is to be interpreted literally. We do not pressure political leaders to promote a certain point of view, nor do we resort to demonstrations and violence against those who disagree with us. The Bible teaches Christians to be kind, good, mild, and reasonable—qualities that do not allow for the kind of fanaticism that is sometimes associated with fundamentalism.—James 3:17”. Many individuals think that Jehovah’s Witnesses are very strict when it comes to living your life exactly as the Bible state, this is not the case.

When Margo was asked about how the religion has shaped her life, and what are some of the challenges that an individual may face practicing this religion? Margo stated that” the religion has helped her to stay focused. The religion has also helped her in understanding the differences in other individuals. The religion has given her a sense of self-identity”. Margo also said that “there are not many challenges that she faces while practices the religion. Some of the common challenges that newcomers face is temptation to do the wrong things. Self control is a big part of their religion”. Members that commit immoral acts in the eyes of the Elders can be subject to dis-fellowshiped. When a member is dis-fellowshiped they are considered bad association to the other members of the congregation. Members are allowed to talk with this person as long as the person is taking the necessary steps to gain repentance. This does not mean that the individual can not attend services; however they are not allowed to speak during services.
Margo was then asked when the religion was created and by whom. Margo was also asked if the religion had a special purpose for its followers. Margo stated that “she follows Jehovah’s word because she will live for eternity if not in heaven then as a follower here on earth." Margo said that the religion was started by a small Bible study group in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
Margo told me that she did not really know much about other religions. She stated that her focus is on her religion and living her life by Jehovah. She added that she does not have anything against other religions. Margo was then asked about the roles in the congregation. Margo stated that” her congregation is run by a group of Elders. The Elders are older male individuals that are considered to be spiritually mature.

As the interview closed up Margo went on to tell me that Jehovah’s Witnesses due not view alcohol as bad. The problem is that people sometimes overindulge in drinking. Jehovah’s Witnesses view overindulging in anything as not following the word of Jehovah. This could be food, work, sex, etc. Margo also said that “if I considered doing field service, attending weekly meetings, and obeying Jehovah’s words as rituals, then those are the only ones they practice. Margo thinks that the religion has not made any major changes over time. She believes that this is due to the higher Elders that oversee the many congregations worldwide. Margo and I wrapped up the meeting with her giving me the address of the Kingdom Hall that she attends and a copy of the most current Watchtower.
Worship Service When I arrived at the Kingdom Hall East Congregation located at 4200 Nazareth Rd Kalamazoo Michigan, 49009, I was surprised to see that the building that we were about to enter did not resemble anything of the common Christian Church. The building was modest, but very nice. I was greeted by a woman who announced her name and shook my hand with all smiles. Margo led me to one of the pews in the middle section. Like other Christian churches this Kingdom Hall had pews; however there were not crosses, no choir, and no priest. As the service was coming to a start I was greeted in every direction. It was like everyone knew that I was a newcomer. The service began with a song from the book of Sing Praises to Jehovah. There were copies for everyone that did not have one. Margo told me that if I was not comfortable standing and singing the song with everyone else I could remain seated if I wanted. I did stand up and try to sing along. The whole congregation was involved in the singing. After the song Several Elders took turns preaching and going over several passages from the Bible. Members of the congregation were able to ask questions. Instead of the usual sermon this process seemed more like a discussion. The service ended with another song form the book of Sing Praises to Jehovah. After the service Margo and I stayed for about another 20 minutes talking to other members of the congregation. I must say that all that greeted me were very kind and friendly. Margo thanked me for allowing her to share some of Jehovah’s words with me, and told me that I was welcome to come back to the Kingdom Hall anytime. I left with Margo’s phone number and I promised to give her a call if I had anymore questions.
Jehovah’s Witness VS. Islam When comparing Jehovah's witnesses and Islam there are clearly some difference but there are some common beliefs. Islam originated in Saudi Arabia, (Fisher, 2005, chap. 10) Jehovah's witnesses originated in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. Watch Tower (2009) Islam follows the Quran While Jehovah’s Witnesses follow the Bible. Both Islam and Jehovah's witnesses believe in one God. Islam refers to God as Allah, and Jehovah’s Witnesses refer to God as Jehovah. Jehovah's Witness agree with other Christian religions in the belief that Jesus did die, while Islam insists Jesus did not die. Both of these religions have a specific place for women to be homemakers. Another difference is while Islam accepts multiple marriages to more than one person at a time, Jehovah's witnesses accept only one marriage with no divorce unless due to adultery. There are many more interesting facts and topics about Jehovah’s Witnesses. This is a topic that a person could spend hours talking about. Throughout this process I have had the chance to gain so much knowledge about Jehovah’s Witnesses. Before completing this report there were many misconceptions that I believed to be true. The misconception that Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult, that they are domineering, and that they practice unusual Christian practices was just that, a misconception in my experience. I felt the members of the congregation to be welcoming and very friendly. Everyone was able to present opinions and I did not feel as if there was a certain leader in the group. Although Jehovah’s Witnesses do not have the same practices as traditional Christians, the religion is not that far off from the traditional Christian. The goal in both religions is to walk in the footsteps of God.

...World Religions Report Kevin Scott HUM/130 July 15, 2012 Glenda B. Mitchell World Religions Report Due to the fact that, religion is in itself a very sensitive subject, when discussing the topic great care must be taken to solicit the best answers to many questions. Religion refers to what many call a way of life, where a person expresses the belief in a higher power or faith. Assessing religion helps determine the meaning of believing in a “higher power”. This report will evaluate Pentecostalism and provide an understanding of what religion means to the people of this faith. An interview was conducted with Miss Monica Hampton, who is a believer of the Pentecostal faith. Christianity is a religion that has approximately 38,000 denominations. Many of which cannot be verified, to be significant. However, the denomination known as Pentecostal is not one of those unverified denominations. Pentecostalism like other denominations believes that there is only one God. Jesus is the son of God, and he died on the cross to erase the sins of man and granted passage into Heaven on Judgment Day. This is the central belief of most if not all Christians and the denominations of Christianity. They believe in “The Trinity”, which is “The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit are one of the same. According to Apostolic Pentecostal Beliefs website, you were required to repent for your sins, be baptized with water and The Holy Spirit. To be baptized in the Holy Spirit, means you had to speak...

...World Religion Report Today there are over one billion members of the Catholic Church and that number grows daily. What it means to be catholic is to love Jesus completely and to follow him and his teachings. Catholics try to integrate Jesus into every aspect of their daily lives. They believe Jesus is lord, father, the son and the Holy Ghost, the Holy Trinity. They follow the Ten Commandments, Thou shalt have no other gods before me, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, Honor thy father and thy mother, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor and Thou shalt not covet. The seven sacraments, Penance, Baptism, Holy Eucharist, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Anointing of the Sick, and Holy Orders are the heart of the catholic religion. There are actually three different branches so to say of Christianity, Roman Catholic, Protestant and Eastern Orthodox. The Pope is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. They belong to Catholic churches that are known as parishes, where they go and worship no matter where their location in the world. Catholicism can be traced back to Jesus Nazareth. Its members are headed by Bishops, whose roles originated with the disciples of Jesus. (Patheos Library website, n.d.) Vatican City and Peters Basilica stands above the grave of Peter. ...World Religions Report Hum 130 Saturday 4, 2012 World Religions Report When I read the Syllabus at the beginning of this course, I wondered, what religion could I chose to do this report on. I had been away from the area for so long I did not know anyone to talk to. Someone knocked on my door and asked me if I could come outside, they would like to talk to me. There stood two men who told me they were missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (AKA Mormons). I felt like a higher power sent them to me. I knew nothing about this Church, but I had heard of Mormons and what I had heard was not good. I was curious and wanted to learn more. The missionaries started talking to me about their faith and read to me from the Mormon Bible, and we had prayer that day. They asked me to do some reading in the Bible and write down any questions I had, and we would discuss them when they came back. When they came back we started with some of the history of their Church. They talked to me about Joseph Smith and asked me to keep an open mind. They explained that Joseph Smith was a prophet sent by God to restore the gospel and the priesthood to the earth. “Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and told him not to join any of the churches, for “They were all wrong” and “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power...

...Running head: WORLD RELIGIONS REPORT World Religions Report XXXXXXXX Axia College HUM 130 XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX World Religions This paper presents research of the beliefs and practices of Roman Catholicism; describes the worship space of the church; summarizes an interview conducted with a believer; and finally, compares Roman Catholicism to Islam. The Roman Catholic Church’s origins come directly from the teachings of Jesus and his disciples, as do all denominations of Christianity. “Jesus sent his disciples into all the world, and Paul had opened the church to the Gentiles. In a sense catholic Christianity was simply a development of Jesus’ plans and Paul’s efforts”. (Shelley, 1995) When Constantine became the first Christian Roman emperor in 313 A.D., Christianity became free from persecution and later even became the official religion of the Roman Empire. This however; marked the unofficial end of the unified church as power plays and politics became as much a part of the church as the gospels themselves. In 1054, the Eastern Orthodox Church split from the unified Church over the principle of supreme authority being held by the Bishop of Rome (better known as the Pope). During this time, the Roman Catholic Church also established its own authority to teach and interpret scripture. “Individual believers are not encouraged to read the Bible and seek its meaning; instead...

...World Religions Report Beverly Ross HUM/130 Kenneth Dietz December 17, 2010 Credentials are important when you are choosing a religion. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe in the Bible as the guiding source based on worthy credentials. Their truths are based on the sacred writings of the Bible. For example Genesis 1:1 says: There is one almighty God and Creator who made all things. They believe in one creator who has a name, and that name is Jehovah. Jehovah’s Witnesses are members of a World Wide Christian Religion who share with others information about God and his son, Jesus Christ. They base their belief mainly on the principles found in the Holy Bible, and view first century Christianity as their source. Their founder is Charles Taze Russell whose background and study of the Bible led him to conclude that hellfire does not exist, God is not a Trinity, and that 1914 marked the second coming of Christ. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that all scriptures are inspired of God and beneficial, but some people have even claimed that they are not even Christians. They believe that “There is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved, which is Jesus Christ”. That is quoted in Acts 4:12 of the Bible. They believe that God is greater than Jesus, and that Jesus himself acknowledged that: “The Father is greater that I am,” (John 14:28) they also believe that they should be like Jesus by making God’s name...

...Amber Gray HUM/130 February 28, 2014 Rough Draft World Religions Report Catholicism is one of the earliest forms of Christianity with its elders being the Church of Rome and the Early Church, which are the original followers of Christ. With the influence of Paul, the great missionary, Christianity spread to the non-Jewish world. He traveled throughout the Mediterranean spreading the Christian message and founding numerous churches. By 313 CE, Christianity so heavily influenced the Roman Empire that it became the state religion and Rome became the center of what is now the Roman Catholic Church. However, Rome was split into two areas; the east under Constantine in what is today Turkey and the west under the Pope and a hierarchy of church officials (Fisher, 2005).  These popes were traced back to the Apostle Peter and are therefore linked to those who were close to Jesus. It is this lineage, which is said to grant the Pope special authority as the leader of the Church. The Pope is considered incapable of making errors concerning key points of faith. The churches of the east did not fall in line with the Pope’s claim to overall church authority and other practices. This eventually led to the official break in the early second century and even the Crusaders, whose mission was to take back lands from Muslims, ransacked Constantinople by destroying a sacred altar and the Holy Church of Wisdom. This act left the east and west permanently separated even until today...

...World Religion Report Carolyn Maynard HUM 130 December 7,2010 Byrl E. Shaver II Abstract Christianity is the largest, and one of the oldest world religions. Although it began as one, it currently has various denominations. All of these Christian groups and churches, however, adhere to the central tenets of Christianity. Christians have a distinct understanding of the nature of God, the identity of Jesus Christ, and the role of salvation. While most of the Christian holy sites are in Rome and Jerusalem, two of the earliest centers of the religion, Christian sites can be found in all countries where the religion is present. The early Christian missions, located primarily in Florida and California, are an example of important sites for the religion in the United States. This paper provides an overview of the religion, information regarding St. Augustine Mission in Florida, an interview with a Christian, and a comparison between Christianity and Islam in order to provide a deeper understanding of the Christian faith. Christianity is currently one of the world’s largest religions. Approximately 33% of the world’s population or around 2.1 billion people profess the Christian faith (Major Religions…, 2007). Who are these people? What do they believe in? Where do they come from? Where are they going? These are some of the basic questions many people, unfamiliar with Christianity, could have about the religion. Many Christian symbols, such as the cross, are well known...

This term was introduced in about 1830 and it denotes the Indian civilization of about the last 2000 years by British writers. In the last century of the second millennium BC was when the Indo-European people settled in India and their religion was Vedism and Hinduism evolved from that. By incorporating all forms of worship and belief Hinduism does not necessitate the selection or elimination of any. Hinduism does not have a beginning or a founder it is both a civilization and congregation of religion, there is no central authority, hierarchy or organization. They believe in an infinite, eternal and all-embracing principal. Hinduism is one of the most sacred religions in the world. There is no other religion that compares to it. Hindus do not try to push their religion on anyone nor do they feel their religion is better than anyone else’s. They are a very nonviolent religion and do not discriminate. Hinduism has been the main religion for Indian people for centuries, so it is vital to the place it was originated in. ...World Religions Report Katherine Grenfell HUM/130 Religions of the World September 21st 2014 Shannon Richmond World Religions Report Buddhism is considered to be beyond religion as it is more of a philosophy and a way of life (A Basic Buddhism Guide: 5 Minute Introduction, 2014). Buddhism sprang from the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama who lived for approximately eighty years in the fifth century BCE. His name means “wish-fulfiller” or “he who has reached his goal” (Fisher, 2014, p138) and through his search to find an end to suffering he became the Buddha, or awakened one. Buddhism is a very personal religion as it encourages its teachings to be tested and explored by each individual, allowing each follower to use the religions in their own way. Having been brought up to explore and question all things, this seems a beautiful philosophy that I could not wait to explore. Siddhartha was born to a wealthy family that sheltered him from all suffering. According to the legend, the Gods arranged for Siddhartha to see four sights: an old man bent with age, a sick person, a dead body, and a vagrant who sought happiness rather than worldly pleasure (Fisher, 2014). The first three sights left Siddhartha contemplating the impermanence of life and the cycle of birth, life, and death, while the final sight intrigued him and interested him in a life of renouncement. He set out as a wandering ascetic in search of discovering a way to total liberation from suffering, spending...

Some of the movies would include scandals that were about priest themselves or about the church hiding some secretive group that had the power to control governments. Some of the stories that have been told, included Bishops and or Cardinals that were the true governing entities over Kings in the times of old. Some of these stories talked about demonic possessions' that only the Catholic church could exorcise. Whatever the story or movie, the Catholic church has influenced millions. It is also known that the Catholic church owns many valuable items such as, ancient texts, various artwork, a library that can not be rivaled, and arguably, loads of money. Even with the "Hollywood fame" and valuables that the Catholic church may have, the Catholic religion has been rocked by scandals and persecution. Nonetheless, the church has stood their ground and continues to strive and its followers, still hold their faith to the church as sacred as ever. World Religions Report: Islam

...World Religions Report: Islam HUM/130 March 13, 2011 Introduction of the religion Islam is a major world religion, with over 1 billion followers worldwide. Followers of Islam are called Muslims. The origin of Islam can be traced back to 7th century Saudi Arabia. Though Islam is one of the largest and most followed religions in the world, it is the youngest of the many religions. According to Secular History, the prophet Muhammad introduced Islam in 610 A.D. after experiencing what he claimed to be an angelic visitation. Muhammad dictated the Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, which Muslims believe to be the preexistent, perfect words of Allah. Though the origin of Islam is generally accredited to the prophet Muhammad but to the devout Muslim, Islam began long before Muhammad ever walked the earth. The Qur’an was dictated by Muhammad but according to the Qur’an, it did not originate with Muhammad. The Qur’an testifies of itself that it was given by God through the angel Gabriel to the prophet Muhammad. "This is a revelation from the Lord of the universe. The Honest Spirit (Gabriel) came down with it, to reveal it into your heart that you may be one of the warmers, in a perfect Arabic tongue" (Sura 26:192-195). "Say, 'Anyone who opposes Gabriel should know that he has brought down this (the Qur'an) into your heart, in accordance with God's will, confirming previous scriptures, and providing guidance and good news for the believers'" (Sura 2:97). Islam began in what is now Saudi Arabia, and like Christianity and Judaism, traces its history back to Abraham. In the Islam religion the belief is there is no god but God and Muhammad is his messenger. God or Allah is the focus of the Islamic religion. Muhammad is not worshiped in the Islam religion, but the life and death of Muhammad is regarded as very important to the religion. The sacred book in the Islam religion is the Holy Qur’an.
