The article “Writing a Relationship: Home-School Journals” explains how home-school journals can create and maintain dialogue between teachers and families. In this article three teachers explain how they implemented these journals and how they affected their relationships with families. Each teacher used the journals in a different way, but through the use of home-school journals each teacher realized, “these journals began to build bridges and relationships between the worlds of home and school” (Kay, Neher, & Lush, 2010, p. 417). One teacher used the journals as a tool to communicate with families, and it was sent home daily. Introduction and Philosophy Sugar Grove Elementary School has a current enrollment of 766 students, with 76 of those qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Currently, 6% of the student population has been identified as eligible for special education services (K-6), and 19% receive Title One reading assistance (K-3). There are 529 Sugar Grove families living in single-family homes, 27 of which live in mobile homes. A review of the research literature is required to lay certain inaccurate stereotypes to rest, such as the notion that poor children are simply lazier students, and do not face additional difficulties with the acquisition of literacy skills. A comprehensive empirical study by Babuder et al (2014) explores the relationship between poverty and reading skills in children, with the results being unanimously negative. The study goes beyond assessing the reading skills of the children, and measures the basic phonological and semantic skills needed for reading comprehension. The results suggest that poor children exhibit major deficits in these areas, and furthermore that their parents will be of little help if they are uneducated and have poor reading skills. Their age ranged between 13 years and 20.5 years with mean age of 14.7 years. Proportionate stratified random sampling technique was adopted. The demographic questionnaire was used to collect respondents’ bio-data while their promotion examination results were used as a measure of academic performance. Three hypotheses were raised and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Analysis of Variance and t-test Analysis were used to analyse the data. The results showed that family type significantly influenced academic performance of secondary school students. On the bases of the findings, it is suggested that parents should be given adequate training on how best they can assist their children to attain maximum success irrespective of their family type.
