The success of the civil suit in my opinion was mainly due to the adequate and proper research that was done, no stones were left unturned and, even though O.J was found not guilty in criminal court for the death of Ron Goldman and, Nicole Brown Simpson respectively he was held responsible for their deaths in civil court. Seeing the outcome of the civil trial against O.J, I knew that I would really enjoy being a paralegal and, to be able to work for some of the best lawyers here at Finnegan & Wicker Law Firm, makes becoming a paralegal worthwhile. ...Challenges of a Paper There are many challenges that can arise when writing a paper. One of them is having an unclear thesis when writing a paper. Which means that the main point does not relate clearly to the thesis of the paper you are writing? This can also confuse the readers and lose their attention. Another challenge that might arise when writing a paper is fragment sentences in the paper. It happens often, and it is when a sentence does not have a subject and a verb in the same sentence. Which causes the sentence not to be complete? This can make the paper have a bad flow. Finally, another challenge that might arise is grammar issues. Because even though it sounds simple you need to understand how the language works, how the meaning is made, and how it is broken. When there are grammar issues it makes the paper seem unprofessional. There are a lot more challenges than these three that I have stated in the paragraph that could arise when writing a paper but these are the main ones that I feel are the most important that a writer should think the most about when it comes to writing a paper. The strategies that I would use to overcome the challenges are: first, to have a clear thesis I need to have paragraphs that relate clearly to the thesis sentence. One main thing is to stay on topic and being detailed, also relating clearly to the thesis of the paper. By having the thesis sentence at the beginning, where it can help the reader understand how the point...

...perform the function of nouns. Using Gerunds in a Sentence In the examples below, the gerund appears in italics and the main verb appears in bold. Gerund as subject Because gerunds act as nouns, they can take any role that a noun would usually take in a sentence. The most obvious role is the gerund as subject, in which the sentence is about an action: Ex. Waking up early is always difficult. Waking up early is the gerund phrase that forms the subject of the main verb is. Gerund as a direct object A gerund or gerund phrase can also be the object of a verb, making it the recipient of an action Ex. Usually, my problem is staying up too late. Staying up too late is the gerund phrase that functions as the object of the main verb is. Gerund as the object of a preposition Ex. Michael Phelps won the gold medal by training every day. Training every day is the object of the preposition by and separate from the main verb won. Although gerund phrases do not require commas, if we were to rearrange our last example, a comma would be necessary. Ex. By training every day, Michael Phelps won the gold medal. It is important to remember, however, that the gerund phrase only gets a comma because it is part of an introductory prepositional phrase, not because it is a gerund. Things to Remember While every gerund is a verb with an “-ing” ending, it does not act as the main verb of the sentence and usually acts as the subject or object of a sentence. Generally, gerunds do not require commas. The...

...re-write a phrase or sentence with the same meaning but using different words. Paraphrasing is a very important skill for most English tests, including TOEFL iBT, IELTS and TOEIC Speaking and Writing. In TOEFL iBT, for instance, paraphrasing is an important skill in the reading section, in the listening section and, above all, in the speaking and writing sections of the test. Here is a quick example of paraphrasing using a phrase from the paragraph above: 1. "Paraphrasing is a very important skill for most English tests." 2. "For many tests of English, being skilful at paraphrasing is extremely important." Notice how the paraphrased version (sentence 2) changes some vocabulary (e.g., “extremely” for “very”), changes the word order (e.g., “tests of English” for “English tests”) and changes the grammar (e.g., “being skilful at paraphrasing…” for “Paraphrasing is a very important skill…”) These are the three main ways to paraphrase and by combining all of these methods, you can achieve clear and accurate paraphrased sentences. The next sections will look at these methods in more detail. Paraphrasing Method 1: Use Different Vocabulary with the Same Meaning Most students try to use this method, but actually it can be difficult to use. The reason is that although English has many synonyms such as ‘large’ or ‘big’, it is unusual for these words to have exactly the same meaning. So, if you try to use a lot of synonyms when you paraphrase, you might produce sentences that are not natural...

...Elements of an Essay/Research Paper Writing Process The series of steps that most writers follow in producing a piece of writing. The five major stages in the writing process are finding a topic and generating ideas (discovering), focusing on a main or controlling idea and mapping out an approach (organizing), preparing a rough draft (drafting), reworking and improving the draft (revising), and proofreading and correcting errors. Discovering – The first stage in the writing process. It may include finding a topic, exploring the topic, determining purpose and audience, probing ideas, doing reading and research, planing and organizing material. Discovery usually involves writing and is aided considerably by putting preliminary thought and plans in writing. Organizing – The sequence in which the information or ideas in an essay are presented. Drafting – The stage in the writing process during which the writer puts ideas into complete sentences, connects them, and organizes them into a meaningful sequence. Revising – The stage in the writing process during which the author makes changes in focus, organization, development, style, and mechanics to make the writing more effective. Editing – The last stage in the writing process during which the writer focuses on the details of mechanics and correctness. Discovering Audience – The readers for whom a piece of writing is intended. Many essays are aimed at a general audience, but a writer can focus on a specific group of readers...

...using this handy guide! 1. INSERT A TOPIC SENTENCE: Encapsulates and organizes an entire paragraph. Although topic sentences may appear anywhere in a paragraph, in academic essays they often appear at the beginning. When creating a topic sentence, ask yourself what‟s going on in your paragraph. Why you chosen to include the information you have? Why is the paragraph important in the context of your argument or thesis statement? What point are your trying to make? It should be noted that relating your topic sentences to your thesis can help strengthen the coherence of your essay. If you include an argumentative claim or thesis statement in your introduction, then think of incorporating a keyword from that statement into the topic sentence. But you need not be overly explicit when you echo the thesis statement. Better to be subtle rather than heavy-handed. Do not forget that your topic sentence should do more than just establish a connection between your paragraph and your thesis. Use a topic sentence to show how your paragraph contributes to the development of your argument by moving it that one extra step forward. If your topic sentence merely restates your thesis, then either your paragraph is redundant or your topic sentence needs to be reformulated. If several of your topic sentences restate your thesis, even if they do so in different words, then your essay is probably repetitive. Although most paragraphs should have a topic sentence, there are a few situations when a paragraph...
