...1 Reflection Reflection is an everyday process. We reflect on a range of everyday problems and situations all the time: What went well? What didn’t? Why? How do I feel about it? We don’t usually follow a formula for this, it just happens as feelings, thoughts and emotions about something gradually ‘surface’. We might choose to do something differently, or not, as a result of reflecting, but reflection is essentially a kind of loose processing of thoughts and feelings about an incident, a meeting, a day – any event or experience at all. Reflection can be a more structured way of processing in order to deal with a problem. This type of reflection may take place when we have had time to stand back from something, or talk it through, as in: ‘On reflection, I think you might be right’, or ‘On second thoughts, I realised he was more upset than me.’ Structured reflection If we consciously reflect, maybe as part of our work or family role, there tends to be a rough process of ‘How did it go? What went well? Why? What didn’t? Why? What next?’ Examples might be of a football coach reflecting after a match, a teacher reflecting on a lesson, or simply a parent thinking about how best to deal with a teenager. In this kind of reflection, the aim is to look carefully at what happened, sort out what is really going on and explore in depth, in order to improve, or change something for next time. This brief guide will look at what is meant by reflection, suggest forms of structured...

...Portfolio Reviewers: For my major, I am taking many science classes and for that reason, most of the writing I have done in previous classes has been lab reports. I also have not had an English class since my senior year of high school, so I have not had to write many papers since then. In these previous English classes, most of the writing has been research papers. Comparing this project to previous projects in other English classes, I have had much more flexibility in the topic to write about and I feel that in this class, the project topic is much more applicable to me and my interests, being that it was about my future career. Previously, I did not have much knowledge on different citation systems, how to correctly cite, and for example,...

...most of my writing has been APA style writing. In fact, the three universities that I have attended in the past have all required me to use the APA style of writing. As I recall my high school years, the APA style of writing also seemed to be a favorite amongst my high school teachers. They all required that term papers be written in APA style as well. This type of writing actually does not differ much from the ones included in the text reading. The text mentioned the APA style of writing several times. In my opinion, it appears to be the most popular style of writing, especially amongst college students. Based on the results of the quizzes, my grammar skills were actually a little better than average. I actually had expected to do better, but I guess my grammar skills are not as good as I thought they were. In any event I feel very confident when it comes to spelling, as I have always been a great speller. Even in grade school, I was a good speller. I learned at a very young age to challenge myself when it comes to spelling. Challenging my-self in that area really paid off as I became older, as I’ve never had a problem with spelling. However, I feel that I need more help with run on sentences and with thought patterns. Though I proof read my paper several times, it’s hard for me to see that I have several run on sentences until after I get my grade back. In general, I feel that my writing is just mediocre. However, I also believe that when it comes to writing, I am my...

...The story under the title “Cat in the Rain” was written by Ernest Hemingway, one of the most favourite American novelists, short-story writer and essayist, whose deceptively simple prose style has influenced wide range of writers. So, the story begins with the description of the hotel where two Americans stopped. It was raining, that’s why the couple stayed in and just a cat in the rain attracted the young woman’s attention. She wanted to get the cat inside but failed and was brought another cat. The problem of the story lies very deeply and we are to uncover it. The story is written in one mood which constantly and directly increases. It starts from the beginning where it’s created by a persistent and repeated use of the “rain” with a number of phrases associating it, such as puddles, deserted square, glistening war monument. Repetition is one of the widely used and favourite stylistic devices of Hemingway. Here he applies it to reveal the relationship of the protagonist to the old hotel owner (she liked ... , she liked...). As the verb “to like” is not used to characterize relations of the wife to her husband, this contrast is full of the concealed but easily read meaning. Though the cases of repetition in the story may seem a bit obtrusive, their modifications enter into the core of the narration very organically. They carry emotional character, however penetrating the story the deep sorrow becomes evident gradually. We realize that little, as if meaningless, capricious...

...Hello My writing process is different depending on the type of writing I am about to endure. If I am to write an e-mail, I will address the person I am about to write and then title the subject to the main topic. That way the person I am e-mailing with have an eye opening to what the e-mail is about. When I write the actual e-mail, I get to the point and do not drag on. If I am to write a poem, I feel my words, I breathe the emotions I put into my poems. I have a site where my poetry is on. I will post a link. My poetry is all from my walk of life, the feelings I endure at the time of my writing. When I would post a quote lets say on FaceBook, I write what comes to mind in a fashion where it can be understood with just a simple task of the mind and the full understanding to blend with everyday life situations. If I were to write a personal letter to someone, I would write it as I feel it. I visualize how my words will come across and how it would affect me if the same words were to be told to me by another. Just as everyday life, for every action there is a reaction. So when a person writes a personal letter to someone and dose not word the letter in a way where your point will get across as well as not having your words feel like the reader is being attacked, I find that to be the reason for misunderstandings. That is why when you write a letter always read it back to yourself as if it was written to you by another, then feel the words and see if it has a full understand and...

...Ali Wally Professor Perez Literature 221 25 September 2013 Connection’s Throughout this eight-week Literature class we have read many short stories and poems. When I started the class I didn’t know what to expect and as the class went on I continuously learned more about different types of writing and most importantly myself. Even the pieces of writing that I didn’t like I could connect with, there was always an underlining symbolism or metaphor that made it possible. But like any person I had favorites and least favorites. Walt Whitman’s ‘I saw in Louisiana a Live Oak Growing’ all the way from week one was one of my favorite pieces of writing we have read all semester. The writing speaks, telling the reader to reach out for friendship and companionship. The last two lines ‘uttering joyous leaves all its life without a friend a lover near, I know very well I could not,’ (Whitman pg. 7). Whitman is telling the reader that life would mean very little without the company we keep. I can relate to what he is saying because it couldn’t be more true. There is not a single person in this world, no matter how strong or independent that would make it without at least one other person in their life. This piece makes me think of my family, which is so important to me. Another of my favorite reads was one of the shortest of the semester in week three, Carl Sandburg’s ‘A Fence’. There was a big emotional pull in this story for me. The emotional fence is...

...steps of your current writing approach. For example, how do you approach writing an assignment for a class? In addition, outline the ways your process differs from or is similar to the writing process outlined in your texts. This paragraph should follow the structure of an effective paragraph. Underline the topic sentence and bold the concluding sentence in the paragraph. Use complete sentences. Post your assignment, Review the additional resources I will be taking the time to explain my current writing approach. The first thing that I do is make sure I have a quiet area to work in and a sound mind so that I can focus on my writing. I usually use my laptop to write because pen and paper makes me nervous. I begin writing what I know and like to discuss, which is called discovering and brainstorming. Then after I have discovered and brainstormed, I begin narrowing down what I want to write about such as: Topic sentence and supportive details. After finalizing my topic sentence, I move forward and compose my rough draft. By drafting what I have written, it allows me to add thoughts and to subtract the unnecessary supporting details. Then after I have done that, I revise the draft by rearranging ideas and reshaping sentences to make a smooth and flowing paper. After carefully examining the paper to see if it contains any errors of grammar, spelling, or punctuation for the last time, I then proceed to write my final paper. In conclusion, the four stages of writing which is discovering...

...period with 20 first graders in an urban school setting. Students simply wrote on self-selected topics without drawing. During the first week students were limited to writing in a 30 minute time frame. Two weeks later students were timed for 30 minutes again and they were asked to draw and then write. Results showed that when students draw and then write their stories, their writing performance increased. Changes to their writing center occurred during this 8-week period. Hence, their feelings toward writing also increased at the end of this study as measured with a survey and informal observations. Introduction: It seems that the Visual Arts is often a neglected aspect of the elementary school curriculum and frequently at the top of the elimination list. According to Norris (1997) teachers are often reluctant to bring art into the classrooms because they are faced with pressure to improve their students’ standardized test scores. Norris (1997) also points out that some teachers don’t view themselves as being artistic, complicated by seldom having the benefit of an art teacher. Unfortunately, as I’ve seen it, art becomes an add on activity “saved” only for Friday afternoons or bad weather days when the students can’t go outside for recess. In addition, if “art” is used, it is used in coordination with writing as an “after-the-fact” activity, as decoration, or illustration when stories are completed. As a first grade teacher I can attest to my students’ enjoyment of classroom...

...lily james 12 December 2012 Writing Process My personal writing process is probably somewhat similar to what other students do for theirs, because we may have been taught similar ways. I have my writing process broken down into a few different parts. First, I do research and gather information if research is necessary to the paper’s topic. Then, I would start writing the introduction to the paper. Next, I do the actual writing of the paper and describe each topic in more detail. The last step is to, I revise it in case of any errors. I also revise it to make it better. Each step is important in order to make my writing good. I will discuss in depth and detail about each part of my writing process. As soon as I get the topic and know what I am to write about, I think to myself of some of the ideas that I have that could relate to this piece of writing. Often times, I come up with a story in my own life that can relate or something that I know of that can influence my paper to have more meaning, not only to the reader, but also to me. It will make writing the paper easier if you can make a connection to the topic and relate it to yourself somehow. If I don’t really have a way to connect it I just brainstorm for things or ideas that can be included or used in the piece. I make a list of things pertaining to the paper so I can go through the list easier. If it is a really detailed piece, I sometimes use the web process. If it is necessary to the paper, I will research the topic...

...By examining different social groups in economic, political and religious contexts, the effects on human attitudes, actions and opportunities can be discovered. With the understanding of sociology in mind I expect the academic literacy workload for sociology to require a lot of reading and writing. Examining human behavior demands a lot of analyzing and research. When analyzing a text it is expected that the author reasoning will be looked for. To fully comprehend a text when reading one must take good notes, summarize and/or paraphrase the main idea. A sociology course requires a lot of precise thinking and reflection. By doing so the text is questioned and allows thoughts about personal emotions and affects as well as whether it connects text to text, self or world or another text. In an informal discussion with an upperclassman in philosophy, I was told that there will be two types of assigned papers study and theory. A thesis is needed when writing a theory paper. Theory papers tend to have readers think and evaluate them critically and address the issue of how and why. A study paper will consist of a hypothesis, research process and results. There will be different writing styles for these papers including APA and MLA. Citing information using APA format is used for research reports and empirical studies. MLA is the most commonly used citation method for general essays. I interviewed Professor Heather Donavan, who teaches a sociology 101 class...

...Group writing can be beneficial in a number of ways. A combination of brain power is good for creating ideas and, accomplishing goals within a specific time frame. Working in a group also gives students an exceptional opportunity to witness how other team members prefer to write. Each individual has the chance to ruminate on their own skills as they learn about the writing process and strategies of others. In addition, team members will offer a diversity of skills that will set them apart from other members of the team. Working in a group naturally involves some degree of cooperation, which will also facilitate one’s ability to successfully work with others in the future. However, team work can sometimes be stressful, and demanding because there are several opinions and a variety of writing styles to combine into one final piece that everyone has to agree upon. Respect also plays an essential role when working as a team. One should always show his or her colleagues courtesy by paying close attention, participating in group discussions, arriving on time for arranged group meetings, submitting drafts within the specified time frame, contributing constructive feedback, and taking accountability for his or her proper share of assignments. Being that there are several members exploring resources and working towards completing the same assignment, certain matters may take more time than others in order to reach a final conclusion. For example determining and settling on a topic everyone...

...Katie 10/10/2014 Every once in a while you hear a story, watch a movie, or read a book that can change your life. Recently I read two books, “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle and “Steal like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. Both of these books are considered self improvement books and are meant to motivate the reader to reach for their greatest potential. However, the two books differ in their writing style as well as, advise on obtaining one’s greatest potential. For instance, “The talent code” was written in a more formal manner with a lot of scientific facts to back up the author’s suggestions on how to improve your skills to reach greatness. On the other hand, “How to steal like an artist” was written in an informal style and used unconventional ways to present information or, advise on reaching greatness. Although the two books had very different writing styles I was motivated by both authors to work harder to reach my greatest potential. These books have had positive implications on both my study skills and volleyball training. The first book I read “The Talent Code” looked at research and scientific evidence to explain why certain people or groups develop extreme greatness in a particular area, which Coyle called “hot beds”. Coyle spent years investigating top athletes, artist, as well as meeting with neuroscientist to explain the “hot bed” phenomena. Colye discovered three main objectives that the “hot beds” had in common. The first is deep practice,...
