...Debate Paper Final Project XBCOM/275 Due Date: June 29, 2014 Instructor: Whitley Sutton Debate Paper Final Project Cannabis is seen to some as hazardous, life threatening, and associated with criminals; but to others it is seen as a pain reliever and life saver from medical problems. From person to person the opinions will vary. The big question seems to be, should cannabis be legalized around the United States? The history of cannabis can be found as far back as the 1500s for the United States and did play a big part in some of our farming and medical fields. It was first brought to the United States by the Spanish in 1545; but the English introduced it in Jamestown in 1611, where it became a major commercial crop alongside tobacco and was grown as a source of fiber. (“History of Marijuana”, 2014). As you can see there were some good uses for cannabis back in its introductory period into the United States. Not only did it help as a big commercial crop to add supplies and profit; but it also helped as a form of pain reliever in the medical field. Marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed for various conditions including labor pains, nausea, and rheumatism. (“History of Marijuana”, 2014). Part of the reason some believe that Cannabis is a life saver for many in today’s society would be for the simple reason that it helps many patients pain get relieved and may help them manage their illness a little better.
