...Short Story Friday Instead of Narrative Friday, we are going to participate in Short Story Friday for the next quarter (at least!). Everyone in the class will pick a short story that they want to read, research, then re-write. There can be no more than three people per story. These three people will then read the story, research it, and re-write the story in a different context. Finally, they will present the story to the class in their chosen format. Group Members: 1)Camron 2)Hunter 3)Nick In order to be educated about story options, students must first research at least three short stories. To demonstrate understanding of these short stories, students must write an NVF for the short stories they research. You will type the three stories...

...Indian Camp December 2011 Going through childhood, and taking a step into the adult world, is something that we all go through. Growing up is a very important part of life. Someday we’ll all become adults, and if you don’t develop yourself personally, you will remain having a childish personality and not have the skills life requires of you to live a life as a normal human being. Personal development is a theme that is very prominent in the short story “Indian Camp” written by Ernest Hemingway in 1921, where we meet the young boy Nick who’s on a mission with his father at an Indian camp. He gets introduced to the realities of birth and death in only one day, and when the day is over, he has got numerous of experiences and has obviously grown mentally. He has taken a little step further into becoming an adult. In my analysis I will make a brief summary, an analysis of the short story, where I will focus on Nick Adams development through the story and discuss which kind of initiation he goes through. Finally to sum up, I will make a conclusion. Nick is a young boy accompanying his father and his uncle George to an Indian camp on the other side of a lake. Nicks father is a doctor, and the reason why they are visiting this Indian camp, is because the father is summoned by the Indians to help a young woman who’s been in labor for 2 days, still unable to deliver her baby. When the father arrives, she is lying in a bottom bunk; her husband, who cut his foot badly with an axe three...

...background and cultures. The many crosses offers challenges and testing, which create both good and bad friendships. But will you describe the friendship between the main character and her friend, in this British short story Feathers and Cigarettes, from the collection “Feathers and Cigarettes & Other Stories”, published in Fish 2013, as a good or bad friendship? Feathers and cigarettes are characterized by a typical short story. The short story starts off in medias res, which means that we are thrown into the story, without any introduction. It is told chronologic and in the end, when the girlfriend tells the secret to the main character, the point of no return occurs. The short story is told by the main character herself - therefore a first person narrator. The point of view influences the story because we see it from her point of view and because of her thoughts and feelings. Unlike the characters that occur in the text, we get no name of the main character. But we know it is a girl because of her girlfriend and her ex. In the beginning we get a outer and a very detailed description, because we get to know which designer label she wears and what kind of makeup she uses: “My denim skirt from Miss Sixty (…) did my eyes with Rimmel Planet Sparkle and my lips with Coffee Shimmer Exaggerate Hydra Colour” (ll. 9-11). In a matter of no time you found out that she is a very hard and refractory girl, presumably in the age between teenager and adult. She uses words as fuck...

...SCRIPT WRITING FOR SHORT FILMS: A Practical Guide In 8 Steps Stuart Hepburn Lecturer in Screenwriting and Performance University of the West of Scotland This Screenwriting guide has been written as a Practical Step By Step account of how you can go from being an unproduced filmmaker to a winner, in a few basic steps. We want you to able to write the best five minute screenplay possible. We want you to play with the form, experiment, and most importantly, find your own voice. Introduction: FilmG – The Gaelic Shorts Competition The FilmG Shorts competition is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wishing to take their first steps in making a short film. However, to succeed in the competition, you have to ensure that your film is as good as it possibly can be. Why? Because five minutes is a short time, and any deficiencies in the script will be exposed sooner rather than later. You only have one chance with your script, and if you miss it, you have lost your audience. N.B. These are NOT a set of rules, but simply a suggested strategy for writing your film. THE 8 STEPS 1. Find a small idea 2. Explore the structure 3. Define your world, character and problem 4. Beat it out 5. Write the first draft 6. Find a critical friend 7. Write the second draft 8. Write the third draft STEP 1: Find a small idea It may be stating the obvious, but every short film needs, at its core, an “idea.” This idea can be as ...

...Crossing ‘Crossing’ is a short story published in 2009, by Mark Slouka. We are introduced to a depressed father, who takes his son on a trip, in the hope of achieving a stronger relationship with his son. The father appears to be very attached to his previous/past experiences with his own father, and in that context a theme such as the relationship between father and son can be related/connected to the text. The story is told from a 3rd person limited narrator. The limited view is seen by the author’s attachment to the main character, who is the father. The story is described through the father’s point-of-view, which can be seen by the big insight the reader is given, on the father’s thoughts and feelings, during the story. The narrator use ‘he’ in relation to the father, which clarifies that it is a 3rd person narrator. The narrative technique contributes to create a personal impression of the father, and creates a relationship between the reader and main character because of the knowledge that readers are given during the story. “For some reason it made him happy, and he hadn’t been happy for a while” The techniques also force the reader to feel compassion for the father, because we know his thoughts and feelings. The readers do not get an insight on the son’s thoughts and feelings, and we do not know what his attitude towards the situation is, therefor it creates a distant relationship between the son and reader. Another narrative technique, that contributes to create...

...“Never judge a book by its cover.” This was written by Edwin Rolfe in 1946. This quote is still used to this day and is one of the most insightful sayings to exist. By saying this, you are saying that you can see what's on the outside. But you won't get the full experience until you see what's on the inside. This quote has a deeper meaning than what it conveys. All of these stories have a deeper meaning in them and they express them in many different ways. You can fully understand the meanings by comparing the figurative language, poetic devices, and the subject in the stories. First, in the story “Watermelon,” by Charles Simic, there is plenty of figurative language. The story starts by implying that the “Green Buddhas,” are the watermelons....

...overwhelming situations that she faces occasionally: seeing her father in all of his shape, after he passed away. This is the actual situation of the first person narrator in Bernie McGill's short story ”No Angel”, which was written in 2010. Throughout this contemporary story, we hear about a woman named Annie, dealing with the loss of her father. Not only has she lost her father, but also her brother, who died as a teenager 23 years ago, and her mom, who died just a few months after. Annie lives alone now, and is having a tough time. With no family of her own to depend on, she is literally on her own, all the way up in distant Northern Ireland. The plot of the short story involves Annie meeting her father after his death, through different occasions. These supernatural occasions are divided into sections throughout the story, which is reflective of the distinctive composition. Instead of a coherent text, which normally characterizes the short story, there are different sections each consisting of a supernatural experience, which Annie, the narrator, experiences. The story jumps in time, from one occasion to another, which gives the story a special touch of its own. Some on the text is told in streams of consciousness, and because of this, the chronological order has been unregulated. It starts in media res, in the middle of an important event. The first time Annie sees her father after his death, is while showering, two weeks after his funeral. As he is standing with his back to...

...No Angel The short story No Angel is written by the Bernie McGill in 2010. She is an author who lives in Northern Ireland, where the story also takes place. It is from the anthrology The Best British Short Stories 2011. The story is about grief, loneliness and how to recover from a death of a loved one. People got different ways to move on, but no matter what, it is terribly painful to lose a loved one, because you suddenly are alone. On the one hand you recover by trying to forget about the pain the loss has brought, but on the other hand you want to remember the one who passed away, because of the fear of loneliness and because the death is hard to accept. Others don’t want to accept the fact that they’re gone and will never be here again, and thereby they find a rather special way to keep the memory of the lost person. They create the lost one(s) inside their head, and pretending they see the dead(s) as ghosts or angels. This makes them able to talk to them and get advices from their beloved, even though they are no longer here. This is the way our main character of No Angel is using to handle her sorrows of her family’s death. The main characters name is Annie. You get to know it when the father says “Have you forgotten what they did to your brother, Annie?...”(p. 3, l. 63). Annie has lost her brother and both of her parents and deals with being left on her own without them to support, guide and, most of all, love her. She still sees them after they’re dead as angels...

... the outer and inner, and that’s the reason why you shouldn’t judge a person by its outward appearance alone. This issue is a central theme in the short story Sorry for the Loss in which Bridget Keehan makes use of the contrast between the conception and the actual reality. The short story Sorry for the Loss takes place in a prison. We are told that the character Evie must notify Victor E22A about his grandmother’s death. After some time, the prison guard leads Evie to the prisoner's cell, where she delivers the message. After the meeting she walks away with a strange feeling of not succeeding. The story starts in medias res “Evie has to tell Victor his Nan is dead” (ll. 1), and one must therefore quickly get an overview of the persons and the environment in the short story, as one are thrown into. ...Save as many as you ruin The text “Save as many as you ruin”, is written by Simon Van Booy. The main character of this short story is called Gerard, and he is about 40 years old. In my analysis of this story I will in some parts go through some parts of the story to find the red line. I am also going to comment on some of the themes, how the language is used, and how the mood is. In the beginning of the short story, we are told that Gerard is on his way home from his work. As he walks home, his surroundings are described. It getting darker outside, which makes the streetlights turn on. It is winter and there is snow in the streets, which he mentions as he is walking. Through “Save as many as you ruin” the surroundings are described a lot, mostly the nature, which seems like telling us about his emotions, which we see as well in the following quote: “Gerard thinks of everyone’s footprints in the show. Manhattan was once a forest. He imagines the footprints of an Indian slipping home, on his shoulders a warm carcass with clumps of snow stuck to its fur”. The story’s narrator works a bit like a limited pointed narrator, but as well the narrator is omniscient. Back to the footprints; Gerard thinks of if there is anything special or good to remember him of, or if he is just like the footprints, which are just disappearing and being forgotten. The first part we see a pretty depressing mode from Gerard, but this is before he meets Laurel, when he walks alone in the snow. In this...

...supportive parents is vital for your life as an adult. On Pale Green Walls is a short store written by Clare Wigfall and it explores some important aspects of growing up. It explores the curiosity of a child and the relationship between adult and child. For example the importance of a good relationship between your parents, and the misunderstandings and disappointments if you do not. It is about a mute girl called Violet who lives in a very religious home with her parents. She was looking down on it, smiling at its bald head. And I could tell how she loved it’’ There is an episode in the start of the story where she sees Virgin Mary and the baby in her father’s newspaper. Violet gets so angry that she tears the eyes out of the baby, and paints blood out of the baby’s mouth. Her parents becomes afraid, and her mother takes Violet to see a priest. It ends with Violet eating the piece of newspaper. The story is told by a first person narrator in a past tense. The short story is told as a retro perspective, as the narrator looks back on a very important moment in her life. The main character in the story is Violet. She is a girl who just wants to be loved. All her life she have...

...Analysis of A Gap of Sky You have to be a good daughter or son. You have to be a good girlfriend or boyfriend, a good friend, a good brother, a good sister. You have to be good at math, chemistry, social science and biology. You have to wear the right clothes, and be good at sports. You have to be popular and have the coolest friends. The pressure nowadays is enormous. There is no wonder why so many young people want to run away sometimes, so they can get away from the huge amount of pressure that they are dealing with. This huge pressure can make people feel very lonely, even though they are surrounded by lots of people, and this is exactly what the short story “A Gap of Sky”, written by Anna Hope, is about. In this short story we hear about a nineteen year old girl called Ellie, who is afraid of not living up to her teachers’ and parents’ expectations and this is what has driven her into a drug abuse. The short story gives us a portrait of a young girl, who is caught in between her desires and what is being expected of her. She is struggling with her inner demons and she is having an inner fight with herself about which decisions are ethically right or wrong. The short story is written as a 3rd person narrative. The point of view is limited to the main character Ellie and the text only describes Ellie’s thoughts e.g: “She remembers going out for booze. Did she get booze?” . The narrative technique that’s being used makes the reader come very close to Ellie’s personality...

...BS When you begin to analyze a story, follow these steps in order to avoid confusion. 1. Read over the story several times One quick read — or even one thorough read — is never sufficient to analyzing a story. Because stories are rather short, you will be able to find time to read the story several times. Analyzing a story you only 'sort of know' will do you no good. Your analysis will be shoddy and it will come across through your writing (or presentation). 2. Discuss the story with a teacher or peer Once you have read the story sufficiently to understand it as best you can, it is helpful to discuss the story with another person. If this story was assigned in school, you will probably be discussing it in class, where you will have the guidance of a teacher and opinions of several other students. More brains are always better than one; consequently, open your mouth and ask your questions. Bring your analysis into the forefront of a conversation so that you can discuss ideas. You may discover that you have found a brilliant new way to view a story. Or, you may discover that your analysis is so far off track that you will need to re-read the story to understand what is truly occurring within. 3. Select a specific theme Stories, like novels, essays, and poems, can carry several themes. You must select one to focus on in your analysis. The beauty of analyzing a story is that it will not be overwrought with too much symbolism or too much plot. It should be fairly easy...

...problem. In the story, Mac Laverty is trying to show that when citizens do not respond to society’s challenges, they become dogs on a leash for a minor group of people who abuse their power to stand their ground. The story lightens the way people should stand their ground and become independent of society’s leash. The short story starts in medias res, as the main character, John Shields, leaves his house to walk his dog, on a normal evening just at the beginning of the nine O’clock news. To add is the environment described very naturally with no subjective opinions or inputs. The language is very informal, and there is used slang, such as “C’mere” and “Aye, mebby” which indicates that they are living in Northern Ireland. In addition, the language is neutral and does not have any indirect opinion to the story, consequently no positive or negative loaded words, which makes the language simple. The story is told by a third person narrator, which has a limited point of view. The narrator is neutral in the way that it has no opinion towards the events, and the characters are described indirectly by what they say and do. This gives the reader a chance to have its own opinion towards the story because it is not decided on forehand. The use of direct speech in a slang like way characterizes the narration and makes the story reliable because the reader can identify itself in the characters. In the text, John says “C’mere you”. The...
