Interpretation of “You Were You”
In Sandra Beasley’s “You Were You” the audience is shown how a previous relationship can strongly affect the life of an individual. My interpretation of “You Were You” takes the reader though an abstract dream of a woman. This dream takes place at a bar, the woman symbolizing a jukebox. This jukebox the woman is symbolizing witnesses her old lover making friends with another woman, the jukebox becomes jealous. The dream ends when she wakes up to people coming to help. The whole poem is very vague and lacks in details, meaning this poem can be interpreted in many different ways. By examining “You Were You” closely, one could understand that the man and woman were once together; the break up leading to a downhill disaster of a woman who once held meaning, but now resorts to drugs to escape the reality of her old lover moving on.
In this dream the woman imagines herself as a jukebox. This metaphor gives the reader a broader view of the situation at hand. The speaker is immobile and unable to interfere with her previous lover. His new woman forcing her to suffer through watching the man move on. By putting herself in the place of a jukebox, she tries to bring back the past by playing songs that her and her past lover once enjoyed. While she observes the man, she announces that she “played Sam Cooke for [him] but [he] didn’t look over once.” This statement implies that she is doing all that she can to be noticed and remembered by the man. This also proves that the woman knew the man well enough to know his tastes in music because she obviously thought playing this song would get him to look at her, but the man did not look over and this hurt her. The woman notices that he was “wearing [his] best smile and the shirt that makes [his] eyes green”. This is a clue that these two have had a past together. The first quote affirmed that this woman knew this man to the point of knowing his tastes in music but the second lets you know that their relationship was more than just a friendship. What she says in the second quote is flirty, letting the reader infer that like his music taste, she also knows his wardrobe and knows it well enough to pick out a single shirt that she recognizes make his eyes green. This is not what a person talking about an old friend would say. This man and woman had some type of relationship at one point in their lives and with the woman trying to get this man’s attention, the reader can infer that she still has feelings for him. A few lines later in the poem the woman says “I was loyal to you” and this makes it hard to deny that these two were once together.
At this point in the poem the reader can tell that the woman and man were once a couple. As the poem progresses the reader can see details that hint that this woman has since gone downhill. The woman started to describe herself in a negative light, saying “I weighed 300 pounds” and, “I glittered like 1972”. At first glance it appears she is describing her looks, however, she is saying she feels unattractive and old. Not old in the sense of being old in age but in being a part of his unwanted past. Witnessing the man she is in love with take interest in a new woman clearly brings down her self-esteem. With her former lover kissing and obsessing over a new girl right in front of her eyes it is easy to understand why this woman would be upset and believe she is worthless. The reader now knows this woman is lacking in self-confidence and suffers from depression. Due to her lack of self-worth, the woman copes by making bad decisions. This is shown when she states, “A man tried to seduce me with quarters but I could hear his truck outside, still running”. The imagery of the man seducing her with quarters implies that she has given in to prostitution. The fact that she is willing to give herself up for just a few quarters shows how little she values herself. This is most likely due to the fact that the man she loves has no interest in her. This makes it more prevalent that the woman is on a constant downhill spiral. This is demonstrated when she says she can hear the man’s truck still running. This statement backs up the claim; if the man were at the bar to stay, his truck would not be running. His intentions were to go in the bar and come back to his truck with the woman in little time. If the reader infers he is picking up a prostitute this would make sense, but how would he know that picking up a prostitute would be so quick? The only reason he would know how long it would take to pick up a prostitute is if he has done it before. The woman has lost all sense of self-worth because of her loss so she has dealt with the pain by almost freely giving herself away.
As another means of coping with her pain, the woman resorts to self-harm. After her old love leaves the bar kissing his new woman, the narrator says “later, I tried to make my own music, humming one circuit against the other, running the needle up and down.” She implies that she is using a drug that requires an injection by the mentioning of a needle. In this quote it is very prevalent that she is comparing her mind and body to the jukebox by stating that she is making her own music. The jukebox is immobile while the drugs she injects herself with make her immobile as well. She states that she tries to make her own music, trying to make herself feel better. She implies that the music she makes is “humming one circuit against the other” meaning that she is causing harm to her body – working with multiple circuits, the circuits are not supposed to touch. The drugs she is using makes the “bubbles in [her] blood [sing]”. It is clearly unhealthy and unnatural for ones blood to bubble, further proving that she is partaking in drug use.
This poem takes place in a woman’s dream. This dream could have been brought on due to her fear of reality or drug related problems. She frequently references herself as a jukebox because she cannot escape the good memories she had with her past lover. She replays songs that they had once loved, constantly remaining prevalent in her subconscious, showing her inability to move on from their separation. She does not want to believe that the man she loves has moved on and she knows of no other way to cope with it. By the end of the poem, she states that “In the morning, they came to repair me”. This implies that she was discovered under the influence of drugs and taken into rehab. This could signify a new beginning for the woman. By being found, she will have to learn how to move on and handle the situation without the use of illegal substances. The author’s use of diction through the use of the word “repair” signifies a new found hope for the woman. In the poem “You Were You” by Sandra Beasley the reader is taken though a dream. In this dream the narrator compares herself to a jukebox, indirectly informing the reader of her issues with accepting reality. Her old lover has moved on, because of this the woman goes on a downhill spiral. The narrator’s life falls apart as she can only sit and watch her past lover love someone else. She attempts to gain his attention by playing songs that once held meaning between the two. This does not work, the reader can assume the man has moved on due to the fact he is very intimate with another woman and does not care about the music being played. This does not work, showing the reader that this man has moved on yet she is still holding on to the past. The reader then learns how the woman has given herself up in the form of prostitution as a man tries to buy her with a small amount of money. This is a result of her sorrow and depression. Finally, the audience can infer she has been injecting herself with a drug to cope with the pain, landing her into rehab. “You Were You” shows how previous relationships can lead people on a downward path and cause them to lose sight of what is truly important in life.

Manners

...personality trait that's good to have. It's practically a necessity. Great manners help you through a lot of life's obstacles for different reasons. Consideration is a reason why manners are important which goes along with your maturity level and how polite you can be on a daily basis. It shows you're a decent person, and that you understand and have respect for the people around you. Manners are very important when it comes to a good social life, ever since elementary school we were taught to use our manners and be polite to the people we tal k to everyday. People judge you all the time, it's just a way of life, and having great manners brings off a positive response and attitude toward other people, and people will unconsciously think of you as a polite and caring person. Another reason that manners exist for a good reasons is, coexistence. Without polite people around, and well manners, coexistence between humans would be quite difficult I think. Manners are just the guidelines to peaceful coexistence between people, and without it, I think it would be a different kind of society to be living in, kind of like animals. Without manners it would be kind of difficult to have a social life, get a job, have any sort of relationship with people etc. Most of the time we don't think about using our manners everyday, but because it has such a big impact on our life's, and we've been taught since we were young to have manners, we are polite and considerate throughout the day without even...

Have you eaten well? Taken good care of yourself? I know you have! I haven't gotten around to actually say this, but I actually like you. A lot actually. I am sure that this comes as a shocker, but I think I love you. Please don't be afraid of me, or think that I am some weird guy, but I truly mean it when I say this, "I love you". As far as I can remember, back in January, you came along and somehow you stayed with me all the way. You have been here ever since I started on this page, and for that, I say thank you. Thank you for sticking with me throughout this whole time. Even though it has only been almost 8 months, I can proudly say that I am proud to have you by my side. I think of you whenever I wake up in the morning, I think of you when I sit in class, heck even when I am just checking the clock on my phone, I still think of you, and hope that there will be a message from you. And of course I get messages from you, actually, you are pretty active when it comes to getting in contact with me. I am happy to see that you actually care for me as well. But I need to apologize. Sorry for leaving you behind. I know that 6 days might not seem a lot to many, but those were the 6 most painful days of my life. To not be able to see you or even get in contact with you for 6...

Would You Be Happier If You Were Richer

...my lecture is about to would you be happier if you were richer. Most people believe that they would be happier if they were richer, but survey evidence on subjective well-being is largely inconsistent with that belief. Subjective well-being is most commonly measured by asking people, All things considered, how satisfied are you with your life as a whole these days? or Taken all together, would you say that you are very happy, pretty happy, or not too happy? An alternative method asks people to report their feelings in real time, which yields a measure of experienced affect or happiness.Increases in income have been found to have mainly a transitory effect on individuals_ reported life satisfaction. Moreover, the correlation between income and subjective wellbeing is weaker when a measure of experienced happiness is used instead of a global measure. More importantly, the focusing illusion may be a source of error in significant decisions that people make. Evidence for the focusing illusion comes from diverse lines of research. For example, Strack and colleagues reported an experiment in which students were asked:How happy are you with your life in general? And How many dates did you have last month? The correlation between the answers to these questions was. When they were asked in the preceding order, but the correlation rose to 0.66(zero point sixty six) when the order was reversed with another sample of students. Similar focusing effects were observed when attention was first...

While You Were Sleeping

...While You Were Sleeping By Summer While You Were Sleeping, composed by Randy Edelman and directed by Jon Turteltaub, includes good examples of a leitmotif. A leitmotif is a reoccurring piece of music associated with a specific character, event, theme, or mood. The two leitmotifs used in this movie are “Lucy’s Theme”, which is a slow, romantic, or even sad piece of music. The “Family Theme”, has a faster beat that goes back and forth and is quirky. The main characters in While You Were Sleeping are Lucy, Peter, Jack, and the family. Lucy works at the train station, and sees Peter every day. On Christmas day, Lucy is asked to work. While working, Peter puts his token in to take the train and tells Lucy ‘Merry Christmas’. Soon, he is pushed in the train tracks. Lucy jumps on the tracks and saves his life. When Peter is taken to the hospital, Lucy goes to check on him and Peter’s family shows up to the hospital to find him in a coma. A nurse tells the family that Lucy is Peter’s fiancée, and shocks the family. Lucy goes along with it because she is worried about Peter’s grandma, who has a heart condition. After seeing the family at the hospital, they invite Lucy to their Christmas. When Lucy arrives at the house, she realizes that she enjoys being part of the Callaghan family and she loves them. The next morning, Lucy meets Peter’s brother Jack. After spending time with each other, Jack and Lucy fall in love. Soon, Peter wakes up and doesn’t recognize Lucy. The family, still...

...divisions were Pride, Self righteousness, Respectability, Selfish Ambition, and Unrighteous Judgment, but the largest of all was Jealousy. The leader of this vast army was the Accuser of the Brethren himself. I knew that there were many more evil divisions beyond my scope of vision, but these were the vanguard of this terrible horde from hell that was now being released against the church. The weapons carried buy this horde had names on them: the swords were named Intimidation; the spears were named Treachery; and their arrows were named Accusations, Gossip, Slander and Faultfinding. Scouts and smaller companies of demons with such names as Rejection, Bitterness, Impatience, Un-forgiveness and Lust were sent in advance of this army to prepare for the main attack. I knew in my heart that the church had never faced anything like this before. The main assignment of this army was to cause division. It was sent to attack every level of relationship-churches with each other, congregations with their pastors, husbands and wives, children and parents, and even children with each other. The scouts were sent to locate the openings in churches, families or individuals that rejection, bitterness, lust, etc., could exploit and make a larger breech for the divisions that were coming. The most shocking part of this vision was that this horde was not riding on horses, but on Christians! Most of them were well-dressed, respectable, and had the appearance of being refined and educated. These were Christians...

The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us. 'My soldier is on his way back to Virginia ,' he said. He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no. I told him that he had the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers. The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat. We completed our pre-flight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure. About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin. 'I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board', she said. She then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father home. Gone Home

...Tumblr It’s just a house. That’s all the game is, a house full of receipts and cups and boxes of tissues. Mundane and ordinary. You can walk around the house. You can pick things up, turn them over. You can paw around drawers and cupboards. You are alone. You are unguided. You can take all the time you need. There’s a lot to uncover in Gone Home, the inaugural title by indie studio The Fullbright Company. Love, loneliness, secrets, desperation, sexual identity, growing up, acting out — it’s all there, hidden under beds and shoved into closets. I saw my childhood in there, and my adulthood, too, and the messy, complicated things I feel toward my family. It left me feeling raw, and clean, and quiet. It’s just a house. It made me cry.  The year is 1995, and twenty year old Katie has just returned home from a year abroad. Not that the house is a home she knows. Her parents moved while she was away, and the house is as unfamiliar to Katie as it is to the player — after all, you are one and the same. No one is there to greet you. The door is locked. The house is empty. The only acknowledgment you are given is a note written by your younger sister, Sam. She apologizes for not being there. She asks that you not go digging around for answers. She says she’ll see you again one day. And that’s it. There’s no quest log, no directions, no arrow pointing you toward something of use. Gone Home hinges on the assumption that curiosity alone is enough to drive the player onward. It certainly...
