1st period Title: Deep Sea/ Hydrothermal Vents
Deep Sea Notes: 1. Locations: The vast zone of Open Ocean is below 200 meters. 2. Marine Organisms: Angler fish, viper fish, comb jellies, squid, octopus. 3. Physical Features: High pressure, extreme cold, low oxygen levels, little to no light penetration, scarce food availability. 4. Unique Characteristics: Contains 98% of all living space on Earth, Harsh environment, Less productive & populated then other Marine Ecosystem, Many organisms use bioluminescence, have large eyes, strong scene of smell, hide being black, silver, red, or translucent in color ( use coloration to frighten predators & communicate), soft flexible body to handle high pressures.
Hydrothermal Vents Notes: 1. Locations: Pacific and Atlantic Ocean at about 2100 meters. 2. Marine Organism: Bacteria, Tubeworms, giant mussels, crabs, lobster, octopus, and even fish. 3. Unique Characteristics: The vents are so close to magma and volcanoes and still manage a healthy ecosystem. 4. Physical Features: Black smoker vents: spew dark “smoke” mostly composed of iron and sulfide. White smoker vents: release cooler, lighter material composed of barium, calcium and silicone. The saltiness of mid-ocean ridge hydrothermal system range from about 0.1 to 7.8 wt % NaCl. Lack of light.
