Many may not know what is Zika, much less of how in the world it is going to affect our society. Let’s start by stating what is this Zika virus, how did it come about to Belize, its symptoms, its effects on an individual, and how this new virus will become a threat to the future of our society’s development.
The Zika virus is similar to the dengue virus. It is spread through bites from an infected Aedes mosquito. Symptoms and signs of Zika may include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and headache. These symptoms are usually mild and last from about several days to one week. This virus/infection is usually diagnosed by testing of the blood. There are no vaccines to prevent or medicine to treat the Zika virus.

Will our society be open and willing to embrace children with microcephaly? Will fathers stand by their spouses during the difficult years to come ahead or will we continue to see a rise in single parent households? Will the government be able to sustainably provide financial support to the families affected? Or will the government fail to provide the aid required? Will the government provide the level of education required to teach people how to avoid the Zika virus and how to treat children and families affected by microcephaly? And will the people embrace and make use of the education that is offered? Will more people resort to having abortions if confirmed that their fetus has a brain defect? And what would be the response of the church and other civil society groups? Will our healthcare system be able to provide quality care and equal access to all families in need of care? These are all questions that we might need to answer if and when the Zika virus reaches
