In 2015, 271 concussions occurred in the NFL which is the highest number of concussions in NFL history. Concussions can have serious effects on players including death. While the diagnoses of concussions in the NFL has increased so has the awareness and research which may account for the increased incidence of NFL players with concussions. This paper will examine the causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, effects and strategies for prevention of concussions. This paper will show that a concussion is one of the worst injuries an athlete can receive. A concussion is when there’s an impact to the head and the brain impacts the skull. Junior, a father of three, played twenty seasons in the NFL and went to twelve pro bowls. In May 2, 2012 Junior committed suicide from two shots to the heart. Junior suffered from chronic brain damage which had been caused from repeated blows to the head. Months before the suicide Junior’s family had said that he was more and more depressed. This depression led to the suicide. Depression is one of the long term effects of CTE. Junior Seau is one of the many examples of suicides from football players in past decade. Over 4,000 players at this point in time were suing the NFL for neglect of their players in the NFL. All of these player were outraged about the fact, that the NFL had known about the severity of concussion yet still didn’t do much in order to prevent them. The players that were suing the NFL, said that if the NFL had released the reports about concussion in earlier years. The NFL was more worried about losing the star players in the league besides protecting the star players in the league. The saddest part of all this controversy is that player like Junior Seau have to suffer just to keep the industry of the NFL …show more content…
The most effective way to treat concussions is with rest. Rest meaning that the person stays out of the light as much as possible and not a lot of stress on their brain like a job, school work, or other causes of stress. Also watching TV, texting and playing video games will not help a person with a concussion. When symptoms start to gradually go away people can start going back into these activities. Yet, if a person has severe migraines from a concussion shouldn’t people just take aspirin or ibuprofen? However, in the case of concussions doctors say to stay away from certain types of pain relievers because they may cause a person’s brain to bleed easier in the healing process. Some pain relievers are better for concussions like Tylenol will help with the headaches during concussions. Concussions can not be taken lightly, concussions can take a while to heal from but healing from a concussion is better than some of the diseases it can form
