METHOD – A life course perspective was adopted and behavioral change models, used in health-related research, applied. In addition, the data of 18 qualitative e-mail interviews with German mothers was analyzed by means of qualitative content analysis. FINDINGS – The transition to parenthood represents an important life event that can be divided into several phases, each of which is characterized by a range of distinct changes in women’s eating behavior and influencing factors thereof. Women develop coping strategies to face these challenges, but are still found to lack perceived behavioral control and self-efficacy and are confronted with perceived barriers, all of which keeps them from adopting or maintaining optimal eating behaviors during the transition, despite...

...“LAST TRAIN HOME” A CASE STUDY OF THE CHINESE RURAL MIGRANT WORKER Introduction China's massive population has always been a major difficulty for the government as it has struggled to provide for it. The major economic changes of China in the last decade have brought on new and different economic and social challenges. Some of these issues are depicted in the documentary film “Last Train to China.” The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of these points that the film brings to light and see how they affect China today. Media reports on social and economic conditions in China present a contradictory picture. The cliché that hundreds of millions of people have been 'lifted out of poverty' is repeated again and again, alongside lurid accounts of worsening social problems which threaten to engulf the country in conflict. Both of these claims have a basis in fact. Most people, not only the rising class of millionaires, have gained materially as a result of China's huge increase in GDP. However, because of the increased role of the influence of the market and the breakdown of socialist institutions, this added wealth has been accompanied by many damaging effects such as mass unemployment, inhumane and dangerous working conditions, and inadequate health care. Some of these effects and the consequent breakdown of the traditional Chinese social structures, especially in the rural areas are seen in real life in the “Last Train”, and will be analyzed in this paper. ...

The objectives of the study were: to estimate the relationship between parents’ educational level, income level and occupations; with pupils’ educational performance in their mock examinations leading to PLE in St Jude Malaba primary school in the year 2010. Data for the study was collected through the use of questionnaires for pupils, interview with teachers and head teachers, documentary analysis of the school records and observation. Both qualitative and quantitative methods of study were used. The researcher used Tables, charts and Pearson’s correlation to describe and analyze quantitative data while qualitative data was analyzed on the basis of themes. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between the parents’ level of education, income and occupation with pupil’s educational performance. Fathers’ education was significant at 0.804 while mothers’ educational level was significant at 0.641. Parent’s level of income was significant at 0.875 and Parents’ occupation was significant at 0.757. These findings are consistent with the concept of social reproduction by Pierre Bourdieu (1986), Annet Lareau (2003) and Randall Collins.
