...What is a monopoly? A monopoly is an enterprise that is the only seller of a good service. In the absence of government intervention, a monopoly is free to set any price it chooses and will usually set the price that yields the largest possible profit. (Stigler, 2013) What is an Oligopoly? Oligopoly is an industry can only have a handful of large firms; it makes it very difficult for new firms to enter into the industry. The firm products can be similar or different, but the action of one firm will impact others in the oligopoly. (Wessels, 2000) What is a Cartel? A Cartel is a group of firms in an oligopoly that get together and agree to cooperate to the detriment of consumers and other firms. The benefit of cooperation is that the oligopolists can charge higher prices to consumer end up with less than they otherwise might have consumed. (Wessels, 2000) Example of a Monopoly: Examples of monopolies includes Microsoft and Windows, DeBeers and diamond, your local natural gas company. Individual restaurants and other products that enjoy brand loyalty in otherwise competitive markets will choose prices and output just like monopolists do. (Monopoly) Phone companies are an example of the breakup of a firm with monopoly power. AT&T was forced to break into a number of local phone companies back in 1982, with several regional operating companies such as bell south etc. Today, AT&T and Verizon control most of the...

... Introduction Bamboo, one of the strongest natural structural composite materials, has many distinguishing features. It has been found that its reinforcement unit, hollow, multilayered and spirally-wound bast fiber, plays an extremely important role in its mechanical behavior. In recent years, the development of biocomposites from biodegradable polymers and natural fibers have attracted great interests in the composite science, because they could allow complete degradation in soil or by composting process and do not emit any toxic or noxious components. For the past several years, public attention has gone to natural fibers as a resource due to their fast growth. Bamboo is an abundant natural resource in Asia and South America, because it takes only several months to grow up. It has been traditionally used to construct various living facilities and tools. The high strength with respect to its weight is derived from fibers longitudinally aligned in its body. Therefore, bamboo fibers are often called ‘natural glass fiber’. To practically apply the benefit of bamboo fibers, it is necessary to develop a process to fabricate bamboo composites as well as to extract qualitatively controlled fibers from bamboo trees. However, it is difficult to extract bamboo fibers having its superior mechanical properties. The bamboo fiber is often brittle compared with other natural fibers, because the fibers are covered with lignin. Objectives 1. The biodegradable and environmental friendly...

...Memorandum TO: Georgia Sias, Director of Class “A” Centers of Louisiana FROM: Dala S. Stansbury, Director of Kid’s Corner Christian Academy DATE: May 16, 2012 SUBJECT: Improving employee morale and productivity in childcare facilities Attached is my proposal to provide director based training on improving morale among teachers and staff. The success of our centers is based on our parent-staff relations. According to 2012 Home daycare overview, daycare centers are now rated below average among in- home centers (Baby Center Medical Advisory Board, 2012). From my experience, parents are complaining that they are not having a good experience when speaking with teachers about behavior matters or in receiving reports of their child’s day. I have investigated further by listening to parents’ constant complaints of how upon entering the center they feel unwelcomed by the tone teachers are using and the lack of concern among directors. Centers in Louisiana are having a problem keeping their staff motivated, which leads to problems that impact the center as a whole. This project will educate directors and staff about the significance of high morale in daycare facilities. When the morale is high, teachers are happy and it is reflected in the lesson plans and interaction with the children. I will discuss the benefits of having a great director, how it correlates to improving the environment of your center...

Specific Objectives: At the end of the unit you should be able to: 4.1 classify and describe the addressing modes 4.2 explain the concept of programming 4.3 discuss the implementation structure of programming 0. INTRODUCTION Programming is a process of composing several instructions to perform certain tasks. The product of the programming is called a program which contains several instructions. The skill of programming is to know the best or optimum composition of selective instructions to performs the required tasks. In other words, we may classify these skills into uniform concepts as structure of programming implementation. These structure shall bear the emphasis to: • what instructions (selectable from a complete list of instructions as a tools list) essential and best to perform a certain task; • how these instructions are organized into a sub program which can be reused or recalled as many times as possible to perform the identical task with different set of data; • to preserve the minimum lines of instruction but performs the maximum tasks. The less instruction lines require less operating times, thus expetite the implementation speed. The main proccess of program (instructions) implementation is nothing else just the manipulation of data. We need to know how to identify the source of data, procedure to fetch these...

However, with the benefit of convenience of using EHRs, comes the responsibility of protecting electronic protected health information (ePHI) and safeguarding sensitive patient data. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) focuses on protecting ePHI with guidelines to ensure organizations have implemented “reasonable and appropriate” security measures to adhere to HIPAA rules and maintain patient confidentiality. HIPAA requires covered entities to conduct risk assessments to verify compliance and attempt to uncover areas where ePHI is at risk of...

Simon School of Business Administration, University of Rochester, Rochester, New York 14627, misra@simon.rochester.edu Paul B. Ellickson Sanjog Misra M ost supermarket firms choose to position themselves by offering either everyday low prices (EDLP) across several items or offering temporary price reductions (promotions) on a limited range of items. While this choice has been addressed from a theoretical perspective in both the marketing and economic literature, relatively little is known about how these decisions are made in practice, especially within a competitive environment. This paper exploits a unique store level data set consisting of every supermarket operating in the United States in 1998. For each of these stores, we observe the pricing strategy the firm has chosen to follow, as reported by the firm itself. Using a system of simultaneous discrete choice models, we estimate each store’s choice of pricing strategy as a static discrete game of incomplete information. In contrast to the predictions of the theoretical literature, we find strong evidence that firms cluster by strategy by choosing actions that agree with those of its rivals. We also find a significant impact of...
