...CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION: WHAT IS STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT? What is Strategy? The term ‘strategy’ proliferates in discussions of business. Scholars and consultants have provided myriad models and frameworks for analysing strategic choice (Hambrick and Fredrickson, 2001). For us, the key issue that should unite all discussion of strategy is a clear sense of an organization’s objectives and a sense of how it will achieve these objectives. It is also important that the organization has a clear sense of its distinctiveness. For the leading strategy guru, Michael Porter (1996), strategy is about achieving competitive advantage through being different – delivering a unique value added to the customer, having a clear and enactable view of how to position yourself uniquely in your industry, for example, in the ways in which Southwest Airlines positions itself in the airline industry and IKEA in furniture retailing, in the way that Marks & Spencer used to. To enact a successful strategy requires that there is fit among a company’s activities, that they complement each other, and that they deliver value to the firm and its customers. The three companies we have just mentioned illustrate that industries are fluid and that success is not guaranteed. Two of the firms came to prominence by taking on industry incumbents and developing new value propositions. The third was extremely successful and lost this position. While there is much debate on substance, there is agreement that strategy is concerned...

Even if for high organization performance the leadership has to focus on high shareholder returns, but it should not solely focus on returns by compromising boundaries of morality. In this paper we will discuss whether moral leadership is crucial for an organization to be successful. First, we will define what moral leadership is and will discuss what are the standards of morality that needs to be maintained in a high performing organization. Then we will discuss whether the moral standards will be same for both personal and organization or they will be different. Then we will talk about the current state of knowledge of this topic and the implications and recommendations that we have found from our literature review. We will also evaluate our argument based on the Wheel of Critical Thinking and the Universal Intellectual Standards Evaluation. Finally, I will present a strategic plan to improve my moral leadership skills. Section 1: Basic concepts and analysis of Moral...

...Supervision and Instructional Leadership Grand Canyon University December 15, 2010 Personal Philosophy of Supervision Jean Jacques Rousseau once made the statement that, “Plants are shaped by cultivation and men by education. ... We are born weak, we need strength; we are born totally unprovided, we need aid; we are born stupid, we need judgment. Everything we do not have at our birth and which we need when we are grown is given us by education”. This statement makes it clear that it is imperative that students be taught how to think and speak in a proper manner so that they will be able to rationalize truths for themselves; thus meaning that administrators need to believe in, value, and be committed to the educability of all. Why then, is it important for an educational leader to have a personal philosophy regarding supervision? Establishing values and beliefs is essential to a person becoming an effective leader. Buddha once said, “Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense” (53 BC -483 BC). Glickman, Gordon, and Ross-Gordon, wrote “…a supervisor’s actions in working with teachers are based on supervisory beliefs, which in turn reflect a broader educational philosophy” (pg. 96). This means that the fundamental purpose of a leader’s supervisory stance is to guide and assist teachers with the task of accomplishing the objective of the school based on his or her educational...

...every fortune ever built, have their beginning in an idea. The wealth comes from turning the idea from something we can see in our minds eye alone into something that serves other people, and for which they are willing to pay. This is done through auto-suggestion, organized planning, master-mind association and an inner harmony between the thoughts of your mind and the actions and achievements of your life. You literally become and achieve what you think about all day long. To control your life, control your thoughts. 1. Thoughts Are Things Whatever the mind can conceive and believe man is capable of bringing into reality. 9. Decision Successful people have the habit of reaching decisions quickly and changing them slowly if ever. Successful people have conquered procrastination. 2. Desire There are no limitations except those we set ourselves. Both poverty and riches are the direct results of our thoughts. 10. Organized Planning Everything created begins in the form of desires which are taken into the workshop of the imagination for proper organization and planning. 3. ...greatness. In the words of the authors, “Visionary companies are premier institutions – the crown jewels – in their industries, widely admired by their peers, and having a long track record of making a significant impact on the world around them.” Visionary leaders and breakthrough ideas come and go, but visionary companies survive the transitions. The “successful habits” of the visionary companies were observed in comparison to “silver medalist” companies in the same industry. Both the visionary and comparison companies outperformed the market, but the visionary companies demonstrated extraordinary long-term results. The tandems most frequently referenced in the book are GE/Westinghouse, HP/Texas Instruments, Motorola/Zenith, P&G/Colgate, Merck/Pfizer, and Wal-Mart/Ames. These comparisons dispelled commonly held myths regarding the nature of exceptional companies. Myth Reality 1 It takes a great idea to start a great company Visionary companies did not demonstrate early success 2 Visionary companies require great and charismatic visionary leaders Leaders of visionary companies were focused on building great institutions as opposed to building their individual reputations 3 The most successful companies exist first and foremost to maximize profits Visionary companies are characterized by the pursuit of multiple priorities only one of which is making money. 4 Visionary companies share a common subset of “correct” core values Visionary companies...

...Development MBA-525 Abstract Leadership in the workplace can be the defining factor that determines whether or not a business is successful. This paper serves to identify several different key leadership principles, how they can relate to each other, and how they can properly be utilized in the workplace. Understanding these concepts results in understanding how to lead employees and how to achieve success in business. The skills required to be a successful leader carry over across a multitude of arenas. Included in these arenas is the workplace. In order to be a successful leader at work, individuals must first be well versed in the skills, also known as principles, which make up exceptional leadership. In addition, they must be familiar with the cohesive nature of these principles. Leaders must understand that although each principle is useful in its own right, these principles, when used in conjunction with each other can grow in strength. Research has shown that the individual principles required to be a successful leader are as countless as the stars in the galaxy. However, just like the constellations in a clear night’s sky, patterns emerge when similar principles are grouped together. When these groups of individual principles are identified and applied to the workplace, what emerges is strong leadership that has the potential for success in business. This paper will discuss several of these groups of principles, breaking...

...Visionary Leadership Probably the single most important tasks facing a leader is to develop an understanding of where the organisation needs to be at some future point. Without a future vision, organisations are destined to live in the past, and ultimately die. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” Proverbs 29:18. For the Christian organisation such vision must come from God. A Process for Developing Vision This process combines prayer and reflection on our understanding of where God has already been moving. This process will take time - maybe some months to work through fully - don't feel you need to rush! It can either be used by the leader alone, or preferably with a small leadership group, which may be the formal leadership group of the church, or may be a selected group of people with appropriate skills and gifts. At the end of this process you should have an understanding of what you believe God is calling your church or organisation to do and to be. 1. PREPARATORY PRAYER : This first stage helps us to "tune in", spending time with the Lord. Pray that he will show you clearly over the coming weeks what he is calling the church to do and to be. 2. BUILDING BLOCKS : God speaks to the church in a number of ways: through experience, through the Bible, through words and pictures and in other ways. This process allows us to reflect on what God may have been saying to the church in four different elements. We suggest you take time to reflect on, and pray through each of...
