...The book that I read was The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Haley. The book was published in 1965. The genre of the book is autobiography and biography. In this report I will be mentioning what the book is about and my opinion on the book itself. I will also be show the impact it left on me. The book is about the life of an African-American named El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz who later becomes Malcolm X. The book begins with his childhood and how his father was killed, his mother was thought to be crazy. Malcolm had to move with different residents due to the fact that the state took him and his siblings away. As Malcolm grew older he began to see how blacks were treated. ...Autobiography of a face-smdep I identity with some aspects of Grealy's memoir. One specific time was when I was in the 3rd grade, I was diagnosed with scoliosis. I had to get this hard plastic brace and was "suppose " to wear it all the time except for when I slept and went to gym class. It was very painful and uncomfortable to be in and it made my clothes look all chunky. In addition, I was afraid to touch people in school. By that I mean I was afraid for people to hug me or accidentally bump into me. I didn't want anyone to know I was a freak. One day this kid Diego decided to punch me....though I do not remember why; he used to make fun of me all the time for various things. But after he punched my stomach, he yelled out in pain because he almost broke his knuckle. Then he looked at me like I was an alien. It was this painful look of disgust. He demanded to know what was under my shirt and when I didn't tell him he tried to raise it. I felt so humiliated and embarrassed. I had that brace for years all the way up till 8th grade, I believe. This is just one incident out of many. There has been many times when I felt i didn't belong; everyone feels that way but each person experiences this differently has has their own story. I also share the narrator's envy of others. I remember growing up sometimes there was no heat...majority of the time actually and once or twice there was no electricity but I still had to go to school with people who complained about their newest phones...

...Victoria Brooks English 101, Section 02 June 17th, 2014 “Personal Literacy Autobiography” (Edited for a better grade, fixing all grammar you edited) I know the definition of a literate person is being able to read and write. If that’s what we are really writing about here, that would be rather boring. You would be reading autobiography after autobiography about how students learned to read and write in Kindergarten or pre-school. Clearly that is not what you are looking for. I have learned over years of writing classes, literacy is so much more than being able to read and write. Being literate also involves being able to write down every thought and feeling, in hopes to perhaps give the reader chills. They feel so into it like it is their own thought or their own feeling. Also, being a strong literate person, to me, is going into a horrible situation and coming out 10 times stronger and more motivated. Personally, I do not really have a list of individuals that made a big enough significance in my life to change it. Well, no one except my daughter. I believe my Daughter, Sophia, made me a more literate person. Having her was a huge, meaningful event that shaped me into who I am today. It all started summer of 2012. I had just graduated high school that June. I knew I had to go to college, but wasn’t really that into it. I just knew that it had to happen because my mom and grandma had always said I had to go to college to get anywhere in life. The summer I graduated...

... columns, and poems. His writing reflected his childhood and his widely diverse views of the world. While he is praised for his poems, his books and playwrights, though successful, have often been called racist or communist influenced. Langston was born on February 2nd 1902 to a poor family in Joplin Missouri. His ancestors include John Mercer Langston who, in 1855, was the first Black American to be elected to public office. His family also includes several past abolitionists, including his two grandfathers, who were both white men from the north. He once stated that his racial status affected his writing. This can clearly be scene in his successful, yet controversial play, “The Mulatto.” Langston first started writing in the 8th grade, but began taking his writing seriously around his high school years. Hughes attended high school in Cleveland. He was known as the class poet, however his father didn’t encourage him to write. His father’s lack of encouragement may have been because it was very hard for a Negro writer to succeed back then. However, Langston once said, “We younger Negro artists now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame.” Langston initially attended college at Columbia University, however, he later dropped out. After Columbia, he began to write most of his known poems, like “The Negro speaks of rivers.” In 1923, Hughes traveled among many places to broaden his view on the world. His visits to D.C. and New York proved...

...self-proclaimed “angriest man in America,” and he even openly called white people devils. Malcolm spent his whole life preparing himself for an inevitable death (Malcolm X, A Leader of Black Pride). He wanted to get his message out to the world before his time came, and it came much too early for a man like him. Malcolm X will live on throughout history because he was so passionate in his beliefs; though they changed often, he always stood up for what he believed was right, and there is nothing more respectable than that. Even if the man’s beliefs were radical at times. Malcolm’s birth name was Malcolm Little. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925 to parents Rev. Earl and Louise Little, the fourth of eight children (The Autobiography of Malcolm X). When he was about a year and a half old, his parents decided it was best to move out of Omaha after a Klu Klux Klan band warned them to leave, or else face consequences (Malcolm X). After passing through Milwaukee for a short time (Malcolm X, A Leader of Black Pride), they eventually found a place to stay, in Lansing, Michigan. Even though they had a new home, the Little family couldn’t seem to escape the “white devils” and soon they were struck with a tragedy. Lansing had it’s own white supremacy...

...ethnicity. Nathaniel despised being an African American as well as other African Americans themselves, referring to them as “niggers”. Leaving behind his wife, soon later whom he divorced, and child left Hughes upset and his mother filled with hate. After his fathers leaving Hughes lived with his mother until he was eight, and even though he was happy to be with his mom, she was not always happy to be with him. On the bad days of her remembering Nathaniel, she would lash out at Hughes saying you are a spitting image of that “devil” following after, “ You’re as evil as Jim Hughes”. When little Hughes became quite and walked away, she would get even madder telling him how stupid and dull he was. In 1909, Caroline withdrew Hughes from his first grade class and brought him down to Lawrence, Kansas to live with his maternal grandmother Mary Langston. While Hughes would be staying with his grandmother, his mother would be traveling many miles seeking out her dream to possibly one day being on stage. Hughes did not like that his mother would not take him with her, nor did he understand why he could not live with either parents. Ultimately, this would be the beginning of hatred towards his mother, whom initiated early emotions of loneliness and rejection, which would leave an imprint on his life. Hughes learned that through poetry he was able to express his feelings, which enabled him to cope with his past abandonment. In his poem “Nobody loves a genius child ”, he expresses his feelings...

...AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF HERBERT HENRY SCHMIDT This is an autobiography of Herb Schmidt as told to Rhonda Schmidt in July of 2011. Herb was 93 years old at the time and his memory of past events was crystal clear. November 24, 1917, I was born in West Alton, Missouri to George Schmidt and Mary Smith Stormer. I was the sixth of eight kids: Bertha, Bill, Frank, Charlie, George, me, Albert and Ed. It was so cold in 1917 that my Mom could not give me a bath for 9 days. [pic] (George & Mary Schmidt, Bertha, Charlie, Bill, Frank, Albert, Herb, George, Ed) [pic] (This photo taken in July of 2011. This is all that remains of the Schmidt Homeplace on Red School Road in West Alton, Missouri. Herb was 93 at the time this photo was taken.) I went to the Red School. I had to walk one mile to school. It was one big room and we had up to 35 kids with only one teacher. There were eight grades. Grades 1 thru 4 were taught every year, but grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 were taught every other year; like if 5th was taught this year then 6th would be taught the next year and the same with grades 7 and 8. The brighter kids helped the slower kids. Albert always needed help. I don’t think he graduated. I took an exam on Health and the teacher did not know how to record it because I got 100%. The year I graduated there were 4 kids who graduated from 8th grade. Because...
