...A Family Supper by Kazuo Ishiguro Setting The story takes place at the narrators fathers house (the old family house I guess) in Kamakuro district in Tokyo, Japan. There is also a conversation between the narrator and his dad while the drive from the airport to his house. In the beginning they are sitting inside in the tearoom. Later the narrator and his sister, Kikoku, take a walk around the compound. They spend some time at the well. Later the father and narrator take a walk around the house. They all eat together in the dinning room. The atmosphere is tense. You feel that the relation between the father and his children is not the best and certainly they don’t feel comfortable around him. The tension between the narrator and his sister is much more relaxed but only when the father is not around. Environment: It seems like the family is well educated and doing fairly well – high social status. The father has been doing serious business but his firm went down. He still has a very big house so he must still be affluent. The narrator has been living in America and the sister is about to finish her studies. All have a high level of education. It’s also mentioned that the family have some samurai blood in their veins. The father is proud about that fact. The story takes place in the old family house and Kikuko and the narrator haven’t been there for long. It seems like they didn’t want to go there before now when their mom died. That setting creates an atmosphere...

...And finally the father who is representing both the new lonely person and traditionalist man; new lonely due to his wife death and traditionalist as his son portrayed him being particularly proud of the pure samurai blood that ran in the family (line17). Regarding the Symbolism aspect, the Fugu in "A Family Supper" this fish played a significant role as the mother death was due by consuming a Fugu meal by the obvious aspect it was during an occasional situation as her first and last time, by the fact the son declared that his mother had always refused to eat Fugu, but during one particular occasion she had made an exception, having been invited by an old school friend whom she was anxious not to offend (line11). In addition, the haunted well...

...One of the lesser known families who patronized art during the Renaissance was the Sforza family. The Sforza family was founded by Muzio Attendolo Sforza. Muzio was a powerful Italian war leader. The name Sforza comes from Sforzae which means to exert or force. The Sforza rose from a lineage of peasants. They used their positions as war leaders to become rulers of Milan. The Sforza family was considerably similar to the Medici family of Florence, Italy. Many members of the family held important positions within the church and political arenas. One of the Sforza’s most well known commissions would be the Last Supper by Leonardo DaVinci. This piece was commissioned by Duke Ludovico Sforza and Duchess Beatrice d’Este. Some sources say The Last Supper painting was originally created to serve as a centerpiece for the family’s mausoleum. It took DaVinci three years to complete this painting as he did not work continuously. I discovered that DaVinci was a well known procrastinator. It was normal for him to even leave works undone sometimes. The Last Supper depicts the story of Jesus announcing to his twelve disciples that one of them would soon betray him. The piece is a mural that measures some 15 feet by 29 feet. While most paintings of this time were created with oil paints, this particular piece was created with tempera on gesso, pitch and mastic. Leonardo used some experimental techniques for this painting which over time, proved to be a bad idea Once completed...

...camp, but I got to be in on that. After we were done at about 5:00, we went back to the mission. I then went to the Bible study in Matukeng where Bro Kali was speaking. I am going to speak at this church next week and Bro Gault said this will allow me to see what the service is like. We sang a song, then he gave a request and we prayed for it, we did this a few times and then he gave a little message. I think that it might have been after that we sang a song as a prayer and we also prayed for a few more requests. I really liked the prayer song. It talked about if you believe, if I believe , then the Spirit will have to come down and all of Africa will be saved. At the end we dismissed with the normal song and handshaking in a circle. We had supper after church once Bro Gault and Erika got...

...your father and mother” is a commandment that has been not only bent but broken, especially in recent times; in fact, today the ubiquitous breaking of this commandment is having such horrific consequences that it is leading to the destruction of not just the breaker of the commandment but the destruction of the family and the community. This year, Caitlyn Ricci has show just how far children have strayed from honoring their parents. Caitlyn is a twenty-one year old who is student at Temple University. In recent years, Caitlyn has become estranged to her parents and has gone on to live with her grandparents. Her parents have said that they have tried to contact their daughter enamors times over the last two years with no communication back from their daughter. Finally, Caitlyn’s parents were fed up and said if she won’t even talk to them they will not pay for her out of state college tuition. Caitlyn Ricci found this horrendous and sued her patents for college tuition money. What is even more absurd is that the judge ruled in favor of the daughter demanding that the parents pay sixteen thousand dollars a year. Caitlyn burned any remaining bridges she had with her family. Once Ms. Ricci has graduated from college who is she going to have to turn to...

...So the basis of the story that goes with this poem starts out on a farm, life on a farm is rough and work never stops. If the work stops than there is no way to provide for the family. Now the poem starts out with a boy doing a man’s job, most likely his father’s job, which is cutting wood with a buzz saw. The first line in the poem starts off with, “The buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard” (Frost 1). The first thing that pops into mind is a wild animal, namely a wolf, which is being territorial about its land. In this case, the buzz saw seems to be against the child doing a job not fit for him and is demanding its original owner. This is where the problem subtly presents itself because the buzz saw is acting like a wild animal being territorial about who uses it. Of course the child does not realize the problem but he will soon. But when his sister comes out to let him know supper is ready everything goes wrong, “His sister stood behind him in her apron / To tell them ‘supper.’ At the word, the saw, / As if to prove saws knew what supper meant, / Leaped out at the boy’s hand, or seemed to leap” (Frost 13-16). Right here the saw “leapt” at the boy at the word “supper”, the result is the boy’s hand being cut off. This goes back to the boy doing a man’s job and the saw “feeling” that there is an intruder in its territory, so the saw...

...The Last Supper As a child whenever I would visit my grandfather’s house there would always be a picture of The Last Supper. In fact he had two, one was in the dining room and the other was hung in the family room. He considered himself a very religious man and believed every family should have one because it symbolized faith and unity within the family. Up until recently I believe the painting was an recreated image of Jesus and his disciples of what the painter felt they should look like and not actual members of the Da Vinci family posing for a photo. Some images shows Jesus with his head bowed slightly while his eyes appear to be close as if he’s blessing the food. Growing up as a child it was taught that everyone sat and ate dinner at the same time and my father gave grace. Even as an adult, whenever I attend family gatherings whether it’s cook-outs, family reunion, birthday parties or dinner at home we all sit to a table and someone blesses the food. I believe that giving thanks or grace as some call it is a simple act of appreciation to God for being the source of all we have, including our food. This is a tradition I follow as a Christian because it was instill in me when I was young and I’m instilling it in my children. The significance of coming together at mealtime shows a sense of unity within the family, every one being of one accord. I believe civilization was created around the dinner table even the Pilgrims and Indians put aside their difference for a Thanksgiving...

...Renaissance: Linear Perspective Maurice Young ART/101 July 21, 2013 Sara Shreve Renaissance: Linear Perspective One of the major roles of the artist is to enable the viewer to see the world in a new and innovative way. This task was a major challenge for the Renaissance artist before the 14th century on account of the artist not having the eyes to see or the skills to introduce the world to linear perspective. Smarthistory (2013) states that linear perspective “creates an illusion of space from a single, fixed viewpoint. This suggests a renewed focus on the individual viewer, and we know that individualism is an important part of the Humanism of the Renaissance” (para. 3). Although beautiful and true to the style of the time, before the Early Renaissance period artist did not paint in three dimensional however, some artist did try to create illusions of space and depth to show the world realistically during the late 1300s unsuccessfully (Op-Art.co.uk, 2012). A list of Renaissance artists took full command of creating three-dimensional illusions on canvases and in their victory we see the world in a new and innovative way. [pic] Fig. 1 1486 Birth of Venus Botticelli Galleria degli Uffizi Sandro Botticelli (1445- 1510) was an Italian painter who studied under the direction Filippo Lippi who was a master painter during the Florentine Renaissance. ...FAMILY CULTURE AND TRADITIONS Name: Institutions: Professor: Date of submission: In our family, there are several cultures and traditions that play a very important role in defining our family values and cultures. These traditions and cultures have been passed to our parents from our grandparents. The two most vivid cultural patterns that are present in our family have been inherited by our parents from the blending of the culture from my maternal grandparents and my fraternal grandparents. The cultural patterns Every Sunday, our father always prepares supper for the family and he makes sure that we eat together as one family. This tradition has been there in our family for a long period and helps us to bond together as a family unit. Every night on the eve of my birthday or that of my siblings, our parents usually sneaks into our bed room and fills it with balloons which are stuffed with money and toys. My father usually writes several bunches of poems and leaves the written poems on our table. When we wake up in the morning, our mother usually prepares for us a birthday morning cake which we enjoy together as a family as we read the bunch of poems. Different roles in upholding the traditions During our Sunday’s family dinner/supper, my parents dwells on teaching us on the way forward in regards to behaviour and especially the use of courteous words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. They discourage...

...The Scriptures mention that deacons tended tables in Acts 6 although not communion. It has been common practice among Baptists to have the deacons serve the element. As a matter of fact Although the Lord ’s Table is not the Passover feast, it was common for families to use this as a time of learning and celebration. I think it is clear that those who have spiritual influence as leaders should be the ones that lead in the practice, but whether they are ordained or are a pastor is not the emphasis of the texts that describe its usage in Scripture. Although many will contest this argument from church history that clergy and priest are supposed to administer the sacraments I think this emphasis is added after what was modeled in Scriptures. Christianity in its earliest forms was much simpler than we know it today. There were no large buildings to gather in. They mostly meet in homes at first. Later, “as Christianity became bigger, richer, and especially when it received the favor of the emperor…the...

...communication, and inability to fulfill her emotional needs. First of all, her parents’ lack of attention is one of the causes to make Connie not open with her parents. Since adolescence is a time of rapid biological and psychological change, it is considered a trying time for all teenagers. Parents should be encouraged to understand the physical and emotional changes that occur to the children and understand their situations. However, Connie’s parents don’t monitor Connie’s behaviors which are increasingly important for parenting adolescents. For example, her mother who only cares Connie’s sister always blames and nags Connie. Also her father “was away at work most of the time and when he came home he wanted supper and he read the newspaper at supper and after supper he went to bed.” Since nobody cares Connie, anyone doesn’t pay attention to what her physical and emotional changes are. The consequence of their parenting, Connie hasn’t voluntarily disclosed her information about her friends or activities...

...Jesus (/ˈdʒiːzəs/; Greek: Ἰησοῦς Iesous; 7–2 BC to AD 30–33), also referred to as Jesus of Nazareth or Jesus Christ,[e] is the central figure of Christianity, whom the teachings of most Christian denominations hold to be the Son of God. Christianity regards Jesus as the awaited Messiah (or Christ) of the Old Testament,[12] while Islam regards Jesus as a major prophet, second in importance only to Muhammad.[13] Virtually all modern scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed historically,[f] and historians consider the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) to be the best sources for investigating the historical Jesus.[20][21][22][23] Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Galilean, Jewish rabbi[24] who preached his message orally,[25] was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified by the order of the Roman Prefect Pontius Pilate.[26] In the current mainstream view, Jesus was an apocalyptic preacher and the founder of a restoration movement within Judaism, although some prominent scholars argue that he was not apocalyptic.[21][27] After Jesus' death, his followers believed he was resurrected, and the community they formed eventually became the Christian church.[28] The widely accepted calendar era, abbreviated as "AD" or sometimes as "CE", is based on the birth of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus has a "unique significance" in the world.[29] Christian doctrines include the beliefs that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, was born of a virgin named Mary, performed miracles...
