Bcom 275 Communications Success at Chilean Copper Mine

...Communications Success at Chilean Copper Mine An effective crises management plan should be part of every corporation’s strategic business plan. The failure of not developing a crises management plan could cause a corporation to face additional financial loss or reputation loss (Gupta, 2011). Research of Corporate Communication Institute found that during crises the ability of have an effective communication team and the ability to master the media is an important tool for the each of the three stages of the crises management plan. The most effective communication strategy is audience segmentation (Gupta, 2011). Audience segmentation will allow the spokesperson to speak to key market segments, which have different concerns than other segments. In the example of the Chile mine collapse the main segments are; Chile mine owners, trapped miners, family members, media, Chile government, and the corporation’s employees. In the case of the Chile mine collapse the owners did not have a crises management plan in place to handle the crises. They failed to handle the crises communication, contingency planning, containment, and had no plan for a resolution. The troubled mine owners even attempted to hide the fact of the collapse but were unsuccessful thanks to the miner’s families. The families of the trapped miners who built a camp near the accident site played a vital role to draw their government attention to the problem. The president of Chile instructed the state secretaries to take...

Audience

...Knowing Your Audience and Communication Release Laura J. Short BCOM 275 April 20, 2014 Brian J. Kane, PMP Knowing Your Audience and Communication Release Communication is important in everything you do in life. Whether between family, friends, coworkers, supervisors or even complete strangers, communication must be directed at the right audience. You would not communicate a certain personal issue to a family member the same way you would communicate it to a stranger. The stranger may have no clue what you are talking about, but your family member probably will understand and even help you determine a solution. This is especially true when dealing with business communication. A business must know the audiences they are addressing to be able to get their message across concisely and accurately but in a timely manner. With the Chilean copper mine collapse, communication had to be top notch. On Thursday August 5, 2010 the San Jose copper mine located in Northern Chile collapsed trapping 33 miners, 2,300 feet underground. The mine is owned by Minera San Estean Primera, who had to deliver the devastating news to the families, employees, media and the public. The mining company had to have someone in place to speak to these different audiences and relay the messages from the company. I can honestly say, I would not want to be in this person’s shoes. The first group they should address is the families and the employees. The information that is shared should...

Modernity of Japanese Women

...Both “Naomi” and “The neighbor’s wife and mine” are representative stories of westernization of Japanese culture. Naomi was written by Junichiro Tanizaki and published in newspaper in 1924. It demonstrates aestheticism and created the word naomism that represents the modern girl. The neighbor’s wife and mine is also a story that shows how Japanese people were longing to be like westerners. Both are stories of transition from classic Japanese culture to modern western style culture. I would like to describe how each story represents modernity and the difference of each women modernization. The neighbor’s wife and mine is the first sound effect movie in Japan. As we can see, the title is written in horizontal line instead of traditional vertical direction. The whole movie shows the influence of the western culture. First, in the beginning of the movie, the painter was drawing a western style house that was rare to see it at that time. He was inspired to the western style architecture and boast to Shibano, the main character, about how beautiful he drew it. Second, when Shibano goes to his neighbor house to claim the loud music, he realized that the house was totally western style, and he even did not know how to use the slippers. The interesting thing is that the music, Jazz, he supposed to feel disgust, was really amazing that he ended up dancing and singing with the people around. The music, Age of Speed, is also interesting because it implies the quick development of society...

Bcom275 Business Communications and Critical Thinking - Week 2

...Research on the Chilean Mine Collapse of 2010 This paper researches four news articles that reported on the Chilean mine collapse that occurred on 5 August, 2010. The focus will be on the communications of the collapse regarding audience. The paper will discuss the potential needs of the families of the miners in receiving a message about this incident and the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about this incident. Finally the question “What actions must you take before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended?” will be answered. There are various similarities within all four articles. First, no one knows exactly if the men trapped below were able to make to an emergency shelter in the mine where there was three to four days of emergency rations stored. All reports do concur to the fact that drilling back down to rescue the miners will be difficult and will take some time. However, once news of the collapse spread through the local community and finally to the world, the families of those men trapped were angry and frustrated with the lack of news. The families’ of the miners require some type of feedback on their current status and that everything possible is being done to assist them. The biggest drawback is being trapped that far below, the mining company and rescue teams did not have answers for those families. Turning to the employees, whether they are working in another mine or part of the top side...

Philosophical Critique of October Sky

...contains some interesting philosophical content. The movie takes place in West Virginia in the town of Coalwood in 1957. The town has a coal mine, which employs most of the men who live there. John Hickam is the foreman at the coal mine. John has two sons, and he intends for them both to work in the coal mine. One of his sons, Jim, gets a football scholarship. The other son, Homer, becomes interested in Rockets. In the movie, Homer overcomes many obstacles in order to launch rockets and get to science faire. John Hickam has a very limited world view. He thinks that the most important thing in life is working in the mine. He only seems to value people in as far as they can work in the mine. To John, any other profession is somewhat frivolous. Homer Hickam seems to be a normal teenager with normal ambitions until his world-view is turned upside-down by the sight of the Sputnik satellite streaking across the October sky. Homer decides that he wants to build and launch rockets. Logic – Homer uses logic in order to gain knowledge of rocket science, so that he can make a rocket. First, he reads science fiction comics and reads about Wernher Von Braun, who is the German rocket scientist. Then Homer meets the nerd in his school who knows about rockets. Then, Homer gets some books on science and math and teaches himself. Then Homer and his friends use trial and error to test the rockets, until they make one that launches correctly. Homer also uses the logic of math to prove that his...

Ethics in Coal Mining

...countries around the world (Coal, 2013). With coal energy still being one of the major forms of energy production, coal energy companies are still trying to secure new contracts to mine coal in new places throughout the United States. Recently this issue has reached the Pacific Northwest as Ambre Energy has been working on obtaining a permit to mine and transport coal through the Columbia River Gorge with mining in Boardman, Oregon. As of today their permit has been denied, but they are in the process of appealing this decision. There are many ethical issues on both sides that will ultimately determine whether or not Ambre Energy is allowed to proceed and obtain a permit to mine and ship coal from Boardman, Oregon. If approved current estimates are that Ambre Energy would be mining and shipping approximately eight million tons of coal per year through the Columbia River Gorge (Friends, 2014). The ethical lens that most easily pertains to this situation is Utilitarianism, which is the greatest good for the greatest number of people. Considering both short and long term consequences is also very important when using this lens to make an ethical decision (Johnson, 2012). It’s likely that both sides in this case utilized this type of thinking when making the decision on whether or not to mine and transport coal in the Gorge. From Ambre Energy’s perspective it could be argued that the...

Chilean Copper Mine

...When informing an audience of news of any sort it is extremely important to make sure to please the audiences and inform the audience of the details that are available. In the article “Over 30 Workers Trapped After Chilean Copper Mine Collapse” the writer, Juan Weik, is straight to the point giving some details to the matter at hand. Weik doesn’t go to far in depth in his details just stating facts on what is happening. Weik is writing this to inform everyone of the incident including fellow workers, families, friends, and others that are concerned. I think since this is a article that is directed to the public, Weik did enough for the families and friends. Not giving to much information to make the families worry anymore than they possibly already are. The biggest concern with the article would be that information about the problems the company has had in the past as it will not make families and friends feel any better about this already scary tragedy that is happening. I feel that this could have been held out of the way until after the men were saved, for the family’s sake. The company itself if it did not already should have issued some more personal messages to the families of the miner that were trapped if they knew more information or kept them up on it as much as they could. After delivering the messages to the families, the companies should leave each family with someone in the company to keep in contact with to make sure that as soon as they find any information...

Ethical Dilemmas

...the beginning of freshman year with a person I thought I could trust, but I later found that out to be wrong. I had gone out on a Thursday evening to a few parties and when I returned to my dorm floor I was surprised to find multiple university police officers with my friend sitting outside his room. The officers approached me stating that they needed to further question me about the situation; I complied and asked how I could help. The officers brought to my attention that my friend claims the drugs they discovered in my friends room were actually mine. Shocked, I told them there is no way and asked if they needed anything else. Out of nowhere my friend is yelling from behind the other officers that I am lying and to search my room to prove it is mine. I had no problem letting the officers into my room and after a rather extensive search of my room they concluded that I have nothing illegal. Due to university conduct codes however I was detained and brought to the McLean County jail and held on drug possession charges. After a long court process and numerous community rights and responsibilities meetings I was able to have my records cleared and all charges against me dropped. When all of this was over my friend told me all of this could have been avoided if I would have...

...those stories of survival amazing, because it is always rewarding when people beat down an odd situation like this one. In august of 2010, I still remembered how the world followed the news of the 33 miners trapped underground in Chile for 69 days, it was at that time that I realized how the whole world only comes together to cooperate on tragedy events. Not matter, if you are American, Latino, African etc but when a natural disaster or a tragedy like that occurs the whole world comes together as one. When a tragedy like the one in Chile occurs the media has to be careful with the way that they inform. Why? Because there are many personal interests involved. On one side you have the business people who on this case are the owners of the mine and on the other side you have the families whose relatives are trapped “at a depth of around 300 meters.” (Weik, J).The owners of the business don’t want to be looked up as the evil people who are responsible for the tragedy and on the other side you have the family and all they want to hear is that their relatives are going to come out alive. I think that those are the consideration that you might have to remember in a tragedy like this one. On a calamity like this one, what the families want to know is how the incident went down and most important of all, they want to know is their relatives are alive and what are the chances of them coming out alive. Once the families know...
