Are you a glass half-empty or a glass half-full person? Some people have a hard time answering that question, Jaqueline Mullaney, nee N’Goran, does not. Although her life has been filled with tragedy and loss, Jackie with her new husband Brian, continues to keep smiling and taking steps forward to a better future. And Jackie just recently completed a huge step, completing her NEDP, National External Diploma Program.
Jackie came to the United States in 2007 on vacation from the Swiss consulate where she worked. While she was here civil war broke out in The Ivory Coast, her native country, and she was unable to return back home. She called her husband, whom she had married only three week prior, who told her it was unsafe to return home and …show more content…
Her desire to learn English faster pushed Jackie to seek out more classes and she found them here at Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island in 2012. Although Jackie was looking for more English classes, she tested well enough to be put into General Equivalency Diploma, GED, track. She worked her way through the pre-GED courses with almost perfect attendance and making it into Janet Lopes’ GED …show more content…
An unexpected bonus the NEDP program was her immersion into American culture, the program emphasizes research, real world activities, and social interaction. Projects included comparing insurance plans to obtain the best pricing, understanding credit scores, and disaster preparedness. Another project that she particularly liked was writing to Mayor Fung about what Cranston was doing to address the Ebola outbreak in Africa. Being able to express her concerns to the government, without fear of retribution or being killed, was uplifting and she was even more surprised to receive a response from the Mayor. She needed to complete 8 modules including geography, history, math, English, community awareness. Her favorite was math, especially the consumer math because it emphasis was on tracking her money and Jackie believes “America is about money.” In the end it took Jackie five months to the complete her

...Analysis and Interpret of “How lucky you are” We all do it. We look at the glass as half empty, we complain about school, and we hate our parents for telling us to be home at a certain time. Until something - an insightful person, a news item or the voice of reason inside our own heads - puts things into perspective. We realize the glass could in fact be viewed as half full, being able to attend school is a privilege, and we should be happy to have parents, who worry about us. We realize just how lucky we are. As its title reveals, Depi Alper’s short story “How lucky you are,” deals with this theme of appreciation. The story is a typical “boy meets girl”-story with a twist. The twist being that the meeting with the teenage girl, Ishraqi, becomes an eye-opening experience to the teenage boy, Max. The story has an atypical structure, in which the opening is written in the present tense as flow of Max’ thoughts. In these thoughts we are being sent back to the flashback of his father leaving him and his mother, in addition to being presented to Max’ world. The narrator of the story is a limited omniscient 3rd person narrator from the protagonist, Max’, point of view, which lets us follow his thoughts and feelings, whilst making the story subjective with only his version and view of things. The performance of the banks depends on a well-structured communication system. So by maintaining an effective communication system, the banks can gain competitive advantage. Thus the study aims to investigate the communication barriers that should be removed for effective communication in the private commercial banks of Bangladesh. A structured questionnaire survey based on 5-point Likert-scale was conducted on 165 full-time employees of private commercial banks. The sample includes 15 private commercial banks. The Principal Component Analysis reveals three types of communication barriers; personal barriers, job barriers, and organizational barriers. Among these barriers, personal barriers are the most significant barriers according to the respondents of the study. Personal barriers include lack of English knowledge, local tone, opposite sex and hot temper. The second most important barriers are job barriers that include technical words, personal life and job monotony.
