Goldilocks switches from plastic bags to little brown bags

As a well-loved, homegrown enterprise primed to serve the rest of the world, Goldilocks has decided to switch to more earth-friendly packaging in the form of their brown bag campaign. Shoppers can now bring home their Goldilocks goodies with the brown cloth bags, bought for P50 or claimed free for a minimum P500 purchase.
“Goldilocks has been always been active in pursuing ways to help safeguard the environment. Apart from numerous ongoing initiatives, we make it a point to examine further programs to make our operations more green-oriented.” says marketing director Pinky T. Yee of the campaign.

The brown cloth bag campaign started in January 2010. By July 2011, the chain reinforced the idea by giving out rebates when the brown bags were used for purchases made on Wednesdays. The rebate campaign that was offered at all SM-based stores at the outset was then launched in all Goldilocks stores nationwide a month later. Complying with local government unit resolutions, Goldilocks also uses paper instead of plastic bags for packaging.

Yee stressed that they have already seen and felt the impact of their actions. “Of course, there has been a significant reduction in our plastic use. What is more encouraging is the fact that customers happily purchase the reusable bags. We’ve also noted many instances when parents have been in store, explaining to their children the importance of not using excessive plastic. As they say, ‘Sow a thought, and you reap a habit. Sow a habit, and you reap a character. Because of this, our brown-bag project has now been instituted as a regular company advocacy.”

The company is currently involved in many environment initiatives such as tree planting activities, waste segregation, carbon emission reduction in their plats, and waste water treatment.

The company is majority owned by its parent company CT Holdings PLC (CTHR), itself one of the largest traded conglomerates on the CSE. We expect the typical signs of consumption growth, such as rising GDP and private consumption expenditure, to support CARG’s revenue growth, at an 11.3% CAGR over FY14E-FY16E. We also forecast CARG’s EBIT margin to expand to 4.3% in FY16E from 4.1% in FY13.
